I t i s unusual for excursion parties to visit our quiet inland village where the attractions are few, but these people do not ex- pect to be entertained but rasher will entertain themselves and a few friends whose acquaintance was made l a s t J u n e at the time of the Statas Verband convention, We hope their visit will be a pleasant one and that they will carry away only the most agreeable recollections of our beau- t iful village. The attendance at the open- ing was a little larger than last year and it has increased, and yesterday the total number was 975. The Prin- cipal and teachers have some fresh from their vacations and they are putting forth their best energies. The Batavia system has been insti- tuted in some of the grades which will prove of great benefit. St. Patrick's parochial school opened on Monday under the direc- tion of Sister Alpheus, the number of pupils being ninety, which num- ber will be considerably Increased in a short time by the boys who are now at work. Sister, Alpheus is as- sisted by Sister linelila and Sister Evarista, the latter being the organ- ist at St. Patrick's church. Sister Patrice is also located at St. Patrick's convent. Sister Alpheus was sta- tioned for the past flv* years at Holy Rosary school in Rochester and she brings to the school here the rich experience gained in that large field. D*»th of M. A Michael Angelo Stearns died at his home in Brooklyn early Tuesday morning. He was born in New York c i t y a n d w a s •»« y e a r s old. He was engaged all his life i n t h e insurance business and for a number of years he had an office in this village and conducted the affairs of one of the large Insurance Cos., ^the fatuity liv ing in the house now occupied by W. A. Spinning. Ten years or more ago he moved to Brooklyn where he was engaged iu the insurance business. He served during Hhe eivil war as second Lieutenant in Co. A. of the Third N. Y. V., and as Captain and A. A. G., being discharged in I8ff. His wife was Miss Elisabeth Sturgeon daughter of the late Samuel Stur- geon of this village and sister of Samuel Sturgeon. He leaves a wi- dow and four children. The remains were brought here this morning on the early train and buried in the family lot In Green- mount, Rev. C. M. Herrtck officiat- ing. ',! C i t y o f Our venerable townsman John Blum returned home last week after an absence of two weeks or more, which he spent in Canada, the guest of bis son Anthony Blum, who is president of she Twentieth Century Mining Company, whose works! are located in the Maintou country. Mr. Blum met a party of stockhold- ers at Buffalo and they then pro- ceeded by boat, stage and on foot to the Upper Maintou Lake country where the mine is located and where they spent ten days inspecting the property. The shaft is down several feet and it is being worked day and night, includiug Sundays, and, it is s.idto be valuable property. 1 Mr. Anthony Blum seems to be the man i n t h e right place, and he Is doing his best to develop the mine. A large stamp mill has lately been in- stalled and all the machinery is of the very latest pattern.
