Isabel Waldron "My !«»•!> Dainty." a new play In four acts, by MaJ^klne Lucette Ryiey, was pro- duced suceesafully by Herbert Kelcey and Mi«* Effle Shannon at the Madtaon Square Theatra* last night. It "Is a production In a somewhat quiet key—not the kind of drama Utar evnfcaa a first night demonstration—toot It was followed t>y the audience with deep int« r»-sl. The performance wa* well received and the curtain call*, if not vociferous, were spontaneous and hearty. T h e p l a y h a * m a n y homely touches. What the audience *e<-m*<l to appreciate in it was that It* patboa never drivelled Into bathos, and that, althuugn its main motive i s t h e temporary separation o f a husband and wife through the machinations of a villain. It Is never allowed to approach the borders, of melodrama. Even the villain has plenty of «I:IK frold, and makes his points In a chuck- ling sort of w«y. The play, in short, has qute-t strength—something resembling re- •erve force—that commended It to those present. Two scenes are especially pathetic. In the first the husband Is suddenly recalled to England i o s e e about a legacy. There Is genuine sorrow of the homely kind I n t h e parting. The Incident wa«« m a d e deeply af- fi>i-titu! tiy Miss Shannon's acting, and she was forceful In the other scene when Jem- ima C'ljidy Dainty' ) finds that during her husband's absence she has been falsely ac- cused tu him. The discovery is peculiarly sad because It la made Just at the moment when the chimes ring out the new year. Mx, Kelcey »s Oglethorpe, the vacllatlng but finally contrite husband, acted well In a not highly sympathetic role. Twice Ogle- llt UT* aPl^ars i n a condition suggestive of trafsScwntousnesa and Mr. Kelcey is more ef- fective in well groomed characters. The hon- ors of t n e p l a y lie. in fact, with Miss Shan- non. The supporting cast was excellent, espe- cially 4Juy Bates Post as Boh. Rocket, the wife's self sacrificing friend, a role Mr. Post kept in Just the right key. and William Boa* as Belter*, to whose machinations a l l t h e trouole is due. Some capita! comedy acting was done by several youngsters, boys and girls, one a '*buttons" and the others chil- dren o f a clerical couple. The wife of the Rev. Franel* Folger has artistic aspirations and Is painting a picture of Venus and Adonis, "but has not yet." to quote one of the children, "had time to paint the clothes." "XA TOSCA" IN PHILADELPHIA. PtiiuiiiMJWiA, Pa., Tuesday. TJw reap- pe*ranee of Mm*. Bernhardt in the role of JPIorta La Tosca and the first appearance here »f M. Coquelin in the character of Scarpia were the occasion of an ovation to these dis- tinguished actors a t t h e Chestnut Street Opera House this evening. It was the only jMirformanee of **La. T o s c a " in thla engage- ment, and brought, out a large and distin- guished audience, quite a large number mak- ing It a prelude to the Wheeler ball. —- MR GKAU AND COVENT GARDEN". The announcement published in the HER.U.D yesterday that Mr. Maurice Gran had retired from the management of C o v e n t G a r d e n in London, ami that Mr. Andre Messager had been selected to succeed him. naturally caused considerable comment in musical cir- cles. The general opinion among those best S>sted In aueb matters seemed to be that lr. Grau'a retirement would only be tem- porary. "I heard in London." said one gentleman who has just returned from Europe, "that Mr. Grau wanted to take a vacation next summer, hut that the directors of Covent <Gsrden were anxious that he should resume th.- management in 1902. a n d it was generally understood there that this arrangement would lie made." Mr. Grau could not be found lastjiight to say whether or not this were true. * THE KNEI3EL QUARTET, In s.»me reapects the most interesting num. ber on the programme of the Kneisel Quartet, at Mendelssohn Hail, las: evening, was the quintet for strings and piano by Caesar Jrraii<-k. O n t o t o n s may differ as "to its In- trinsic musical value. A s a series of tone pictures &* emotional moods Its effectiveness will he geueraJly conceded by those who heard it. The Kneisel*, assist by Mr. George Proc- ter at the piano, read the quintet in such a manner that none could mistake the eorn- nos-'r's meaning. Mr. Procter might at times have cxer.ised more self-restraint, and had the piano lid been left closed his work would have been in better proportion. In contrast with Caesar Franck. the audi- etK*t bad first of all Dvorak's E fiat quartet <op. 31 > good, sane music, abounding in healthful melody and animal spirits—and Imstlv Bee'haven's quartet i n C major (op. Si, No 31. which chased away the devils of doubt and despair evoked by M. Franck, and sent everybody home happy. The audience was large, and. as is always the ea#e at these chamber music events, intelligently musical. FIRST HENSCHEL RECITAL. Mr and Mrs. Georg Henschet gave one of their A-htr-uing song rviitals. the first o f t h e i r present tour, in Mendelssohn Hall yesterday afternoon.
