PHILOSOPHY

WHAT IS THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND THIS MODEL?

We want to promote recreational, instructional and competitive hockey.

To Development base skills through high tempo practice.

To encouraged skill development at all age groups, regardless of ability

Seek to promote an enjoyable recreational and competitive experience in which players can learn and have fun.

Young players under-train and over-compete (too few practices/too many games)

Adult models superimposed on young athletes (Early Specialization)

Training in early years focuses on outcomes (winning) rather than processes (optimal training)

Chronological age dominates training rather than biological age The “critical” or “sensitive” periods of accelerated adaptation to training are not utilized (Windows of Trainability).

STRUCTURE

PRACTICE Learning to train

Every age level provides an optimal window for motor coordination development. During the learn to train

phase of model we stress:

Practice Fundamental Station Skill Development Drills thatintroduce passing, shooting and transition fundamentals

TEMPO,TEMPO ,TEMPO

Small Area Games allow coaches to utilize skills taught in station based

practices and apply in game situations.

The Optimal Window of Trainability for 8U Mites is for speed and flexibility

On-ice focus for Mites is on Fundamental Movement Skills and ABC’s

Off-ice focus is on coordination, balance, flexibility and speed

Speed training can be included on and off the ice in the form of races and tag games

LONG TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT
