Thomas Tallis’s setting of the Lamentations of the prophet Jeremiah is undeniably one ofthe most revered works of the Renaissance canon. While 16th century Roman Catholics likeTallis primarily associated this text, which describes the aftermath of the destruction ofJerusalem, with Holy Thursday, Tallis’s beautiful arrangement of the verses transcendsliturgical use. Performed by the superb singers of New York Polyphony, this story offinding faith in times of despair proves as relevant today as it has throughout millennia.
