Education For student musicians, the chance to hone their skills in workshops with musicians of the New York Philharmonic can be a life-changing experience. Tailor your visit by adding on educational components based on your group’s needs and interests.

FOR ALL STUDENTSPre-Concert Talks and Post-Concert Q&AIn Pre-Concert Talks, your group will go on an in-depth exploration of the compositions they’ve come to hear, and receive listening hints and insights into the music to help enhance their understanding and enjoyment of the concert.

During the Post-Concert Q&A, students have the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with a Philharmonic musician. These sessions last approximately 30–45 minutes.

ExPRESSLY FOR STUDENT MUSICIANSYoung musicians can sharpen their skills and develop their musical understanding by working with the renowned musicians of the New York Philharmonic.

Master ClassesYour top students perform individually for a Philharmonic musician, who offers supportive critique of their technique, sound, and musicianship, while the rest of the group listens and learns. Master classes typically last two hours, with each player receiving 20 to 30 minutes of instruction.

SectionalsMusicians of the Philharmonic rehearse sections of your band or orchestra separately to help develop students’ skills in ensemble playing, intonation, musicianship, and teamwork. Sectionals are typically two hours long.

ClinicsA staff conductor of the New York Philharmonic leads a rehearsal of your ensemble. The clinician will work on specific areas of technique and interpretation determined in consultation with the ensemble’s director. Tips on conducting technique and working with young ensembles are also available to ensemble directors. Clinics usually last 90 minutes.

Watch musicians of the New York Philharmonic working with student musicians at nyphil.org/clinic.

To obtain more details on any of our educational components, please contact Group Sales.

Please note: Our ability to fill your request is subject to the Orchestra’s schedule. Group capacity limitations apply.

FOUR GREATSThis season we focus on four of the biggest names in orchestral music, placing them in the context of the music of their own time and tracing their impact on future generations. Find out why Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms are the lasting pillars of the repertory, and why Bernstein’s legacy as a composer continues to grow.

Saturday, October 15, 2:00pm

BACHJ.S. Bach summed up everything accomplished in the Baroque period of music, but his music went out of fashion for a century after his death. Fathom some of the richest music ever composed, and trace Bach’s resurgence and his impact through generations of succeeding composers.

Saturday, November 12, 2:00pm

BERNSTEINLeonard Bernstein may have been the Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, but as a composer he sought to unify popular and classical music. Find out where that mission led him and his successors.

Saturday, March 17, 2:00pm

BEETHOVENNo composer is more central to the symphonic repertory than Beethoven, but his music was difficult for his own generation to accept. Discover what set him apart and why his example has dominated musical thought for 200 years.
