The Society departs from its traditional concertformat and presents a full evening of music fordivided choruses. First, the women’s chorustakes center stage to present Berlioz’ Tristia: “Lamort d’Ophelie” and “Sirènes,” from Debussy’sNocturnes. After the intermission, the men’schorus joins with two soloists to perform one ofSibelius’ greatest symphonic choral works,Kullervo, a 70-minute suite that follows the lifeof the tragic character featured in Finland’snational epic poem, Kalevala.Johanna Rusanen, sopranoTakaoki Onishi, baritoneManhattan School of Music SymphonicMen’s ChorusChorus and Orchestra of the Society

In commemoration of the 100th anniversaries ofthe World War I armistice and the independenceof Poland, the Society will present two 20thCentury Polish masterworks. Górecki’s Euntesibant et flebant “They who go forth and weep” issung in Latin by an a cappella chorus, andSzymanowski’s Stabat mater infuses thetraditional liturgical text of Polish folk rhythmsand melodies.
