PCGS sponsors a concept coin show. Most of our readers have heard about this show because we attend, but not everyone may be familiar with what it is about. The PCGS invitational was setup to insure that workaholic coin dealers would have some vacation time. Other activities and benefits are numerous. For dealers who have tables, the invitational part has to do with PCGS inviting you. In order to have a table, PCGS requests these dealers do a certain number of walk thru grading submissions, at the show. Usually there are about 25-30 dealers in a small/ medium, size meeting room. The location is the convention area between the Palazzo and Venetian Casino Hotels. Let's just say it's a few steps up in life style from the usual convention facilities. The dealers get a couple nights in the hotel, in this case, the very plush, Palazzo, located in the center of the Las Vegas Strip. We are also treated to breakfast and lunch buffets held right in the bourse area. Quite a bit of wholesale trading takes place as dealers bring stock and trade coins that have just been graded. Now here is more good news. PCGS does not limit attendance to table holders only. That's right, if you are an authorized PCGS dealer or a PCGS club member you can also attend, submit coins, and/or buy and sell. If you reserve early enough PCGS also extends its group rate at the Palazzo. Recently that has been $129. Did I forget to say how crazy nice this place is. The rooms are about the size of my condo and the bathroom is bigger than my bedroom. If you have not been to Vegas in a while, it's great fun and can be a no questions asked trip to a coin show from any loved ones, as long as you bring them along. It might even work on bosses, assuming you want to bring them along. I heard at the show, PCGS was attempting to set up four of these shows for next year. The schedule will likely be posted on the PCGS website. So just to summarize: Coin show, Grading, Trading, Casino, Food, Vacation, Vegas, repeat.

1793 1C CHAIN AMERI 1836 PS$1 J-58, P-61, R-6 1795 $10 BD-2, R-6 PCGS F15 PCGS PR53 PCGS MS GEN The activity was stronger than you would have expected at this recently held invitational (December 15-17). I guess dealers were buying in anticipation of the upcoming New Year. Even with gold prices moving gradually lower that week our sales were higher than usual for this event. Additionally we had saved up a big basket of coins to have graded from our attendance at the Baltimore and Michigan state shows in the preceding weeks. This led to a record number of submissions and a lot of new coins on our list. Some real First Class beauties. Check our website. I think you will find the quality of coins we are saving for our list is constantly improving. There is no way we can market all the coins we buy and grade. Therefore, we are choosing only the best to offer you here and on our website. Note: Some of the new purchases would have been sent to CAC this week but they were closed until after the New Year. We didn't want to hold up offering these great coins through F.U.N.

The F.U.N. Show is right around the corner. If you have never been to a really big show, F.U.N. is a great way to start. The massive convention facility in Orlando is a bit generic, but did I mention how massive it is. Next to Vegas, Orlando is convention headquarters. While I don't enjoy the backdrop of Orlando quite as much as I like Vegas, it's still an entertaining place and you can bring the family, or just the missus. This year our TABLES are 409-411 at the big show, which starts on Wednesday January 7 and runs through Saturday January 9. Prior to that, Orlando has a pre-show which is aptly named the First Show, in honor of the start of the year. Pretty nifty isn't it. The First Show is held at the Double Tree Hotel formerly known as the International. Not real fancy but interesting little setup of winding garden pathways and cabanaish hotel rooms stacked in two story barrack style buildings. This show runs from January 3-5 to and our table number is 1. We should be right up front as you walk in, facing the door. Though only a warm up to the really big show, we will be buying and selling, in an effort, well, to get warmed up. Many hefty size transactions take place at these pre-show events while everyone's checkbook and eyeballs are fresh.

Yes folks, it may be one of those offers that says FREE and really isn't but we have had an awful lot of takers .So we have extended our offer to submit your coins TO PCGS and NGC for FREE. That's right; your eyesight is not going bad. We said Free. Here is how it works. If we approve your coins under the SUBMIT them for FREE program we send your coins to either PCGS or NGC and you pay nothing. When the coins come back, we will make you an offer to buy the coins, based on your freshly minted grades. We ship everything to the grading services overnight and they ship back to us the same way. Then we make you an offer to purchase your coins, if you sell to us, you do not have to pay for the grading, it's included in our offer. If you decide not to sell you pay the grading fees and postage. Isn't that a great offer? We will also lend our expertise to your submission sorting. We can help you identify coins that might be no grades and make sure the value of your coins matches the submission tier you choose. Your coins are handled and cared for as if they were our own. Everything we do will be tip top and completely professional; we stake our reputation on it! At the show we are offering a special deal on walk through fees for some submissions. Please stop by or call for these special details.

As I mentioned earlier, trading was stronger than expected in Vegas and the shows in Baltimore, or Balimore, as my friend Allan likes to say, as well as, Michigan State, were on fire. The latter shows due to rising GOLD prices, which have cooled a bit. Gold has gone from a high of 1217 to just back under 1100 and now has been toying with moving back above 1100. Keep in mind this is still an incredibly high gold price. With gold's upward momentum reversing, generic 10 and 20 dollar U.S. gold, Proof eagles and other Bullion related items are a little off their peaks. Rare coins have firmed up from the slowdown at the end of '08 and first half of '09. Price levels remain lower and there are still a lot of great buys to be had. The increased activity in GOLD has led to increased activity in Rare Coins, so it's hard to tell what will happen in 2010, but my guess is we have leveled off, and much of the weak hands have been washed out. I`ve heard that auction consignments are coming in much slower now, as fewer large collections come to the auction block. Everyone should remember that '07-'08 prices and market frenzy, of that period were the strongest ever. Folks who cashed out at that time made some big bucks. Many of those sales were no accident as we had been watching the market rise for about 5 years. There is always a lag time to get somebody off the chair and sell what they have been assembling for a lifetime, but when the market roars, even the hard of hearing eventually come to the party, and Party they did. With current conditions, I suspect we will see less of these big deals and this should help to shore up the market as well. New collectors and decreased supply should have an effect in 2010. I feel positive about the upcoming year and believe it will be a great time to acquire GREAT COINS for your collection.

A note About Networking and Our Emailers HLRC.com

First we are about to embark on some new ways to stay in touch with you and you with us. The first step will be getting our Twitter account going. Technology continues to be a game changer in our market and we don't plan to ignore these possibilities to improve our communication with you. Twitter has the advantages of allowing you to follow us though a series of mini announcements without filling up your email box. We will ask you to sign up on our account and receive our updates. This will be coming soon, and we will make an announcement. We will continue to send out these larger emails as we complete updates of our inventory. We would like to have more collectors on our list but our old website has hampered us. We think this will change with the new site. Our email software, Constant Contact, instills "good business practices" and this keeps some folks from getting the newsletter. In the upcoming weeks, and especially once the new site is running I will send around some brief emails asking people to give us email addresses that may be friendlier than the ones we have. In some cases we have work emails that are restricted and though we can send you a normal communication, we can't get through your in box when we do a mass mailer. For those of you currently reading this emailer, you should be fine. If you're seeing it somewhere else and did not receive as constant contact email then you should contact us. Either way you will be hearing from us and we hope to be online with everyone soon.
