Did you end up making any New Year’s resolutions? If you did, perhaps one of your

resolutions was to be kinder to others. If so, that’s wonderful. But don’t forget to be kind to yourself, as well.

Many people treat themselves in ways that would be considered scandalous if applied to others. Do you honestly expect other people to work themselves half to death, accept blame for things that aren’t their fault, single-handedly accomplish tasks that should be delegated to multiple people, solve everyone else’s problems and never get a single moment to themselves? Of course, you don’t. So why have similarly unrealistic expectations of yourself?

Someone I knew once suffered a serious injury but was horrifi ed by the idea of allowing others to take care of him. One day, he had a massive hemorrhage. “Don’t worry about me,” he insisted. “I’m doing fi ne!” Had he not been physically dragged to the hospital, he would’ve politely bled to death. Sometimes, we can take the need to not impose upon others too far.

Be good to yourself. Remember it’s okay to accept help sometimes. If you feel you’ve been bearing the weight of the world on your shoulders, ask yourself why. Have you conditioned others to believe you’re some kind of magical being responsible for solving everyone’s problems? If so,

it’s okay to let people fi gure out things for themselves sometimes. This includes kids. Children who have an adult swooping in to fi x every little problem often develop poor coping skills. They’ll still be expecting someone else to solve their problems well after they reach adulthood.

Avoid playing the martyr. If you fi nd yourself constantly whining about the sacrifi ces you make, there’s a simple solution: Stop sacrifi cing. The martyr complex — seeking to impress others with woeful tales of self-sacrifi ce — is more widespread than many people realize. It’s psychologically similar to people who live through their kids. Having no lives of their own, they vampirize every aspect of their children’s lives. Professional martyrs, also having no lives of their own, manufacture their own problems and then invite everyone to a big pity party afterward. Sure, they give up a lot for others. And you can bet that they’ll never let others

forget it, either. Under the guise of dedication, they’re actually practicing an extreme form of selfi shness, expecting applause (and worse yet, guilt from others) for even the smallest act of so-called “duty” or “sacrifi ce.” People who really do practice duty and sacrifi ce don’t go around boasting about it.

Some people make New Year’s resolutions to change their physical health while disregarding their psychological, intellectual, moral and spiritual health. You don’t have to develop the body of an Olympic gold medalist in order to make a benefi cial change in your life. There are improvements that don’t involve dropping a pants size. If you’re interested in spirituality, perhaps it’s time to take your spirituality a step further. What can you do to better yourself spiritually? How can you make yourself more emotionally healthy? How can you be more ethical? What new things will you learn this year?

One fun way to enter a new

year is to do something that you normally wouldn’t. Step out on a limb and try something new, something out of character. Whatever you do to usher in the new year, have a good time with it. If you’ve been driving yourself too hard, relax. You don’t have to take on the problems of the entire world, or even your entire family. Don’t be a martyr. Above all, resolve to have some fun this year. You’ll feel better for it.

•••

Don’t forget that the new year also gives you a fresh opportunity to start sending in your regional religious news. If your events aren’t announced in the paper, it’s probably because you didn’t send them in. Nobody will know about your events if you don’t announce them. Be sure to send in news of your local events so everyone gets a chance to hear about them. E-mail church news items to [email protected].

This directive is available on FDOT’s Web Site. In addition to the restric-tions identified in Direc-tive No. 375-030-006, please be advised of the following prohibi-tion: A consultant firm or its affiliate who was the Designer or Engi-neer of Record is pre-cluded from bidding on the same project as the construction contrac-tor, or as a member of the construction contractor’s team (subcontractor).FEDERAL DEBAR-MENT: This project is federally funded with assistance from the Florida Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration(FHWA). would be distracting,” said Lesa Burdeshaw, principal at Kate M. Smith Elemen-tary School.

Another issue with the current site is that the campus is bisected by a city street, Taylor said. “We have talked to the city about closing that road, and there are utilities there that the city would have need to maintain ac-cess to.”

Taylor said having a city street run through a campus is something the Department of Education frowns on.

The 22-acre site off South Boulevard stretches to Brickyard Boulevard and is separated from that street by a drainage area. There is no construction on the property, but the water utilities are in place, Taylor said. “Another prob-lem with the current site is the infrastructure under the school is 60 years old,” he said. With the new loca-tion, all the water and sew-

age plumbing would also be new.

The district is trying to get a site located and a package prepared so the project can be presented to the Special Facilities Construction Account Committee in Tallahassee in August. If the project can be approved in August by the state, then it is pos-sible the school could be considered for state fund-ing beginning as early as 2014.

“This is a long-term project, but we have to get the process started,” Tay-lor said. Currently there are two Special Facilities projects in line ahead of Washington County School District that have been approved by the state for funding — a $49 million and a $36 million project. “If we can get approved, and if no other schools are out there planning a proj-ect, we could be number three in line,” Taylor said.

Taylor said the elemen-tary school is projected to

cost about $20 million. Once the school board

approves a site for the new school, the next step will be to get an architect’s

drawing for the project.“We’ll probably start ad-

vertising for an architect’s services in the next two weeks or so,” Taylor said.

The proposed site for the new elementary school is seen in this aerial map, presented to the site selection committee on Thursday at the Washington County School District administration building board room in Chipley. The property is northeast of the Chipley High School and Roulhac Middle School campuses and stretches between Brickyard Road at the south end of the property and South Boulevard at the north end.

Humanity Wash-ington County chapter, and the Habitat For Hu-manity Thrift Store was closed Thursday in his memory.

“When I first met him, he was Col. Yates,” Page said. “It took a while be-fore he let you into his other side.”

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Becky Yates of Chipley; three sons, Steve Yates and wife, Lisa, of Chipley, Todd Yates of Leander, Texas, and Mark Yates and wife, Alison, of Lynn Haven; one sister, Edwina Showers of Chipley; nine

grandchildren and two great-grand-children.

Memorial ser-vices were held at the First Bap-tist Church in Chipley with the Rev. Michael Orr officiating.

“We will miss him in Kiwanis Club,” Page said. “We made him an honorary lifetime member when his health got to where he couldn’t attend meetings.

“I think his service and what he meant to the Kiwanis Club was evident by the number of Kiwan-ians at the service today,” Page said. “There were a bunch of us there.”
