AAUW Del Mar-Leucadia Branch was “At the Table” for the San Diego

North County Women’s March

An estimated 4,000 people marched from the Civic Center in San Marcos to the campus of Palomar College on Saturday, and we were there! At the rally on campus, speakers called on the crowd to move "Forward Together," to support the rights of immigrants, women and the LGBT community, plus stand for protecting the environment. We

shared a booth with the North County League of Women Voters to help marchers find ways to stay engaged, and had over 30 people sign up to receive more information about our branch! Thank you to AAUW DML members Michele McNeil, Norelynn Pion-Goureau, Ginny Spence and Patricia Johnson-

Khalifa along with Arleen von Schleider, Karen Vanderwerken, Sue Ellen LeRoy, Andrea Henne, and others for representing our branch!

A CALL FOR BRIDGE PLAYERS! AAUW Bridge group meets the 3rd Wednesday and 4th Thursday of the month. Looking for players who are beginners and intermediate levels. For more information contact Michele McNeil, [email protected]

New Member Spotlight – Meet Patricia Johnson-Khalifa

Talking with Patricia you get the sense that she is a strong-willed, determined woman, who is kind and compassionate and ready to get involved in all aspects of women’s rights. She loves people!

Patricia’s background is Music and Drama Education. While living in Detroit, she spent 30 years teaching Art. In addition, she was a counselor and teacher at an alternative school. When she moved to California to continue working as a counselor, Patricia lived in an area with a high immigrant population. This gave her an opportunity to get involved, so she created “Diversi-Tea” with the idea of getting women with different beliefs and ethnicities to congregate at her house and start a dialogue while having a cup of tea. By the way, one of Patricia’s many skills is to host events. Throughout her career Patricia used her talents in photography, music and art. She also wrote plays and poetry. With her counseling

background, she had the opportunity to help at UC San Diego to set up counselor programs for Kenyan students. Other activities that Patricia enjoys are sewing and quilting. She also volunteers at her church. In her spare time, she is writing her memoirs! Welcome to our AAUW Del Mar-Leucadia Branch!

Marcy Llamas Senese, PhD, is now working half-time in the Writing Program at the University of San Diego, teaching first-year writing to about forty 18-year olds in the spring and fall semesters. In addition, her new business, The Perfect Pen, continues to grow as she works with graduate students, graduate programs, and post-doc students to support academic writing. She'd love to hear from you at her new email address: [email protected].

Barbara Jenkins-Lee recently returned from a camping adventure across Mauritania's Sahara Desert. “Starting from a small fishing village on the Atlantic the Toyota 4x4 caravan flew us (over, under, sideways and almost upside down) multitudes of sand dunes almost all the way to the Algerian border and then south through the boulders of the African Eye to the capital of Nouakchott two weeks later. Each night we camped with local tribes but that was highlighted with a 'magic carpet ride' one evening when our tents attempted to blow away in a sand storm gale with us in them.” She says it was an exhilarating experience!

Life member Edith Hope Fine will join Donna Lilly at the March 31 San Diego AAUW meeting, speaking on Diversity in Children’s Books, the topic she presented to our branch in 20016. Also in March, Edith will join other authors on March 2 at Sycamore Canyon Elementary, Santee, for the annual Authors’ Fair sponsored by the GSDRA (Greater San Diego Reading Association). As the Grammar Patrol, Edith and Judith Josephson will present March 9 at the CATE conference (California Association of Teachers of English), based on tips and cartoons in their Nitty-Gritty Grammar guides.

Membership Dues Message from AAUW National

The AAUW Board of Directors voted in June 2017 to enact the first dues change in almost a decade. Effective March 16, 2018, national dues will increase from $49 to $59.

Annual dues currently account for 13 percent of AAUW’s annual budget. They help to sustain and grow AAUW’s programs and work that advances equity for women and girls. A combination of dues, donations, and corporate and foundation funding is critical to supporting AAUW’s salary negotiation workshops groundbreaking research, advocacy efforts, campus leadership programs, and so much more.

We believe we can do great things together and thank you for your continued support.

Table for Two

Conversation with Co-Presidents Sharon Corbett-Parry and Andrea Henne

Sharon: I was just looking at the information on the website at https://www.aauw-ca.org/event/ about the AAUW California Convention 2018. It’s at the Irvine Marriott on April 27-29 and early registration ends March 7!

Andrea: Wow, that’s coming up soon! Let’s encourage our members to attend. Sharon: It looks like there will be many important sessions to attend,

and I love the theme of Educated. Reasoned. Active. Andrea: And this will be another opportunity to have dinner with

AAUW’s new CEO, Kimberly Churches! We had a wonderful time in January when we and several of the Interbranch Council members had dinner with her the night before her presentation at the IBC!

Sharon: I’m so glad we had that opportunity to “Be at the Table” with Kim! Her vision for the future of AAUW is very compelling.

Andrea: What did you think about her efforts to re-focus AAUW on impacting three main areas of Advancing Equity, Education & Training, and Leadership?

Sharon: She really wants us to go beyond just marching for women’s rights, but instead, ask ourselves what comes next. She reminded us that AAUW must be relevant and mission-related if we are going to have an impact.

Andrea: She wants AAUW to imagine such goals as training 10 million women through StartSmart & WorkSmart, champion Pay Equity legislation in all states, not just a few, and ensuring that the Title IX Coordinators’ positions require more of a focus on enforcement. And we should keep in mind the equation of Focus + Relevance = Impact

Sharon: Our new AAUW CEO is so amazing! She invited all of us to contact her any time at [email protected].

Andrea: Let’s also remind our members to take action on the AAUW 2018 National Bylaws Amendment. The comment period is February 22 - March 22 online for members to propose amendments to the AAUW Bylaws and propose resolutions.

Public Policy

By Norelynn Pion-Goureau, Branch Public Policy Director

Those of us who were fortunate enough to attend the Interbranch luncheon Saturday, January 27, (here’s a photo of some of our members “At the Table”) were treated to an amazing discussion led

by our new CEO, Kimberly Churches, a real fireball of energy and ideas. Among the information she shared was that our State Convention would have plenary meetings in peace work, public policy and inclusiveness. The most significant overall impression she has gleaned from her travels, and she has been everywhere participating in local AAUWL meetings, is that we need to be inclusive and “3-D”, multi-dimensional. At the same time, she made it clear we were in danger as a group of being too scattered and in our activities, and she emphasized that we need to define our mission and follow it with laser precision.

Kimberly stressed that AAUW branches need to have a “theory of change, that’s how we get things done and, therefore, get known.” We should be working on advancing our mission—equity for women and girls—by creating value, not just collecting memberships, a phrase she repeated several times. CEO Church introduced the group to the SWOT process—looking at our Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Our platinum rule is that we must meet people where they are, recognize different needs. 400 organizations in the United States are working on gender equity—what distinguishes us? “We don’t join AAUW to be caretakers but to force change.” Key components must be economic security, education, and leadership. For the organization she has set certain criteria: Focus, Relevance, Impact; these are how decisions are evaluated. AAUW must have Liquidity, Adaptability, and Sustainability, or we will end up being an educational trust. CEO Churches’ closing admonition was that AAUW must go beyond emphasizing membership, and instead hold roundtable discussions and interactions with the public. She left us with a lot to digest and incorporate into our mission.

Donate Items to Assist Refugees in San Diego

Our February 10th meeting on Assisting Refugees in San Diego County was an eye-opener! Donna Duvin, from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Elaine McLevie from RefugeeNet gave very compelling talks on the need for assistance for refugees arriving in San Diego from all over the world including Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia and other countries. Branch members and guests from the community were touched and inspired by the many stories that were shared.

Contact Michele McNeil, [email protected] for information on items needed. Michele will arrange to gather donations and drop off at either site. Monetary donations or Walmart gift cards are also needed.

AAUW Members – Be Tech Smart!

Tips to Prevent Cyber Attackers

A common misconception people have about cyber attackers is that they use highly advanced tools and techniques to hack into people’s accounts or computers. This is simply not true. Cyber attackers have learned that the easiest way to steal your information, hack your accounts, or infect your systems is by tricking you into divulging personal information.

This manipulative practice is referred to as social engineering. Social engineering attacks often bypass security technologies because these criminals exploit your natural inclination to trust people. Fortunately, stopping such attacks is much simpler than you think. In these situations, common sense is often your best defense. The most common clues of a social engineering attack include:

Someone urgently asking for your help, such as the need to send money to a friend stranded in another country.

Someone asking for information they should already know based on their role, such as a financial institution asking for your account number.

Someone asking for information they should not have access to, such as a password because they claim your account is about to expire.

Someone you know reaching out to you that doesn’t seem like their usual self, such as a family member that you don’t typically correspond with over email. This could be a clear sign that their account has been hacked.

Something too good to be true, such as you’re notified you’ve won a prize, but hadn’t entered any such drawing.

If you suspect someone is trying to fool you, cease communications with them immediately and notify your email provider.

Leaders in Action! Karen Vanderwerken and Bobbi Karnes were at USD for the Bergman Memorial Lecture, “Seeking Equity in our Schools” at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice on February 15. Our AAUW Del Mar-Leucadia Branch was listed as a partner for this important reception and panel discussion in honor of the 1947 Mendez v. Westminster landmark federal court case that challenged Mexican remedial schools in Orange County, the first ruling in the U.S. in favor of school desegregation. Bobbi was especially interested in the event as her husband was a 5th grader in Westminster when the schools were integrated.
