1 New Year, New Beginnings! Our annual Covenant service marks the beginning of a new year in the Methodist Church. It takes place on Sunday, September 4th, and will be a joint service at Wreyfield Drive, as we hosted it at Northstead last year. The service will be led by Rev. Rosie Coles, who will have pastoral charge at Wreyfield from September 1st. Lifts will be available from Northstead from 10 to 10.10 a.m. Our various children’s activities — Parents and Tots, Rainbows, Brownies and Guides - recommence when school starts in September. Ladies’ Circle start their new programme with a Beetle Drive on Tuesday, September 13th, followed on the 27th by Nigel Spencer, speaking on the “Bulbfields”—I expect there’ll be some lovely pictures too! The Wednesday Fellowship begins again in October — see your next newsletter for more details. Our Keep-fit group meets on Thursday afternoons from 1.45 to about 3.15 p.m. for exercise, a cuppa and a chat! Badminton Club continues regularly on Thursday evenings at 7.30 p.m. Singing for Fun starts again at 7.15 p.m. on Monday, September 5th, with emphasis on the “Fun”!

From our Minister

Micah 6:8:”What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and

to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Happy New Church Year for 2016-17 - we made it through our first year together! Thank you for your continued prayers, encouragement and for your willingness to work with me. It’s been a great privilege to become settled in Scarborough and serve our Lord.

Serving our Lord requires all of us, in some way or other, to be committed to Jesus in faithfulness and service. At the beginning of each Church year, those of you who are members of the Methodist Church, receive a new Membership ticket, reminding us of the commitment we first made when choosing to become a member, and a reminder that membership is renewed annually. As with all things that we choose to belong to, it requires something of ourselves: a commitment to worship, learning and caring, service and evangelism. Every year a Bible verse is printed on the ticket. The verse for this year is Micah 6: 8, the chosen theme of our President Revd. Dr. Roger Walton and Vice president Ms. Rachel Lampard: Holiness and Justice.

In living out our faithfulness and service, what might we choose to do better this year for the sake of the gospel? There may be those amongst you who are wondering about becoming a member of the Methodist Church. If you are interested in membership, then please let one of our Church Stewards know, or have a conversation with me.

Over this next church year there will be more opportunities for us to share in fellowship in different ways including Advent and Lent Bible Studies, a summer programme, social occasions and social action: all combining to allow us to encounter spirituality

Worship Events

Rev. Jane Carter and Deacon Andrew Carter officially start work in our Circuit in September, and there will be a Circuit welcome service at 6.30 p.m. on Friday, September 2nd, at St. Hilda’s Church, Church Square, West Cliff, Whitby, YO21 2EG. The speaker will be Rev. Stephen Burgess. Tea and cakes will be served from 5.30 p.m.

It will be Northstead’s turn to host the monthly Circuit

Prayer meeting on Thursday, September 1st at 6.45 p.m. Refreshments will be served from 6.15 p.m. Please come along and join with others in prayer. The next Circuit Prayer meeting will be at Fylingthorpe Church at 9.45 a.m. on October 7th, with refreshments at 10.30.

We will once again be leading a short act of worship at Eagle View care home on the first Wednesday of each month starting on September 7th at 10.30 a.m. The service lasts about 20 to 30 minutes, and we share well known hymns, short bible readings and prayers. It is much appreciated by the residents and all are welcome to join us, in fact the more, the merrier!

Messy Church this month is on Thursday, September 29th at 3.15 p.m. The theme for this season is the parables of Jesus. We start with drinks and snacks, followed by a short time of worship, and craft work based on the theme for the day. Everyone is welcome — it isn’t just for children, so come and join in the fun!

Praise Midweek continues on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at Northstead, organised by Gill, Annie and Sandra from

Our Mission

We are called to be a worshipping, welcoming, praying and caring Christian presence within our community.

and promoting peace between all God’s people.

Thank you to Megan for this lovely prayer.

Lord Jesus, as the Father sent you into the world, so you sent me to show all people your love. Let my hands be your hands, ny words be your words, so that I may give your love to everyone I meet and help to spread this love to the ends of the earth.

Amen.

Church Family News

Our love and congratulations to Ruth Dale who recently celebrated her 70th birthday and to Maurice and Chris Macer who will soon be celebrating their Golden Wedding.

The NHS has been busy looking after several of our members during August. We hope you’re all feeling the benefit from cataract removals, pacemaker insertion and gallbladder ops, and we give thanks for the care and skills of those who work in our hospitals and clinics.

All of our Sunday Club and Messy Church children and Rainbows, Brownies and Guides will soon be back at school and moving into new classes. We wish Megan well as she moves to St Augustine’s, and any others changing schools.

*****************************************************************************

Dear God,

New beginnings are exciting, but they can also be hard.

We pray for schools and colleges at the start of a new school year.

We ask for your blessing on school children and students, their teachers and all the staff who help them.

We pray especially for those beginning at a new school or college, that fears may give way to confidence, that excitement may lead to creative learning, and that meaningful friendships may be made.

We pray, too, for those who struggle through their school days and find learning difficult, and for those who refuse to go to school.

Be with all of us at times of new beginnings and help us with the feelings that change evokes, that we may look forward with hope rather than with fear. Amen.

News from Priceholme Support Group

Priceholme is a Methodist Home, but you do not need to be a Methodist to live here. However, the Methodist

Church supports those who need assistance with the fees, and provides for the everyday needs of the residents.

The Support Group provides the “extras” that bring so much pleasure to the residents. Over the past year, we have contributed to presents at Christmas and birthdays for the residents, trips to the Grainary at Harwood Dale, to Castle Howard to see the Christmas decorations and to afternoon tea at Sewerby Hall. The lap top and the Kindles are proving to be quite a success, enhancing the lives of these lovely people. We had a brass band concert for Priceholme’s 53rd anniversary in June in the band stand, which looks lovely in the garden. We ignored the showers and had a lovely afternoon with ice cream and cakes. We had a great time celebrating the Queen’s birthday with a ‘street party’ inside. Janet our Activities co-ordinator sets a theme for a few weeks at a time and we base lots of things around this. We had a gardening theme and planted peas, beans and sweet peas in the garden, we enjoyed the Rugby World Cup (we didn’t actually play) and Wimbledon, and we are now looking at weddings. At the time of writing, we are looking forward to the Olympics. I wonder what we will do for that.

If you feel that you would like to come and join us or help, please ring and speak to Janet, who will be delighted to have you on board. We have started a musical morning on Thursdays from 10 a.m. Hugh Penny plays sing-a-long type songs and we serve drinks and biscuits. There is no charge for this, so if you or someone you know would like to come, you will be very welcome. So we sincerely thank you for your support in prayer, money or helping run fund raising activities.

We couldn’t do all these things without your support. We will be holding a Coffee Morning on October 22nd at Northstead, with cakes and stalls, so please come long and join us.

In the past we have had a great team of supporters, but many are now growing older, and although they still support us faithfully in prayer, we really need more “active” supporters. Please fill in the form below, if you can help in any way, and return it to Ruth Dale (Secretary) at 8 Gibson’s Court, North Marine Road, YO12 7HS, or email to [email protected] by 31st August 2016, so we can invite you to the AGM at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 15th at Priceholme.

Circuit Prayer Concerns

Each month on our Circuit prayer list, we are asked to pray for the work of our presbyters and deacons. Recognising that many others work in our churches and communities, we also pray this month for the work of fellowship groups and flower

arrangers. The two churches on our September prayer list are Briggswath and Sleights and Burniston churches.

Briggswath and Sleights—Please pray for John, Ellinor and Hannah Pugh as they move, and also for our new presbyter, Rev. Jane Carter, and Deacon Andrew as they join us in September.

A difficulty shared by many chapels is the need for more young able workers. In your prayers please ask that with Jane's help, we may extend our circle, so that we may continue to fulfil our promises to God in the Briggswath and Sleights area.

Burniston—Burniston Church reaches out to the community in various ways: work with children and young people sows the seeds of God's life into young hearts; craft groups draw people from the area together and Coffee Stop on Thursday mornings offers a meeting place for people from near and far.

Different outreach events have been tried or are proposed and our constant prayer is that God will guide us in our choices and bless what he wants us to do. As we consider the balance of outreach and in reach, we recognise the need to be strengthened in the Word of God and for a deeper understanding and revelation of the Holy Spirit, so that we can all grow in Christ, into the fullness that God desires for his church (Ephesians 4:13). We are exploring ways to further this through DVD teaching sessions and training events, and how we might encourage more prayer in the church. If you'd like a suggestion for your prayers for Burniston Church, try using the prayers of Paul in Ephesians 1:17-19 and 3:16-21.

Thank you for your prayers - we appreciate them!

Alzheimer’s Society: Our Side By Side Service The Proof is in the Pudding from Bernie Brown

Those who attended some of the Encountering Spirituality sessions earlier this year will remember Bernie and Colleen, who gave us an insight into how we can support people with dementia in our churches.

*************************************************************

Side By Side is an Alzheimer’s Society Service which helps people with dementia access activities which they have always loved to do, with the help of a volunteer.

For a number of months our volunteers have been taking people with dementia out and about, with activities ranging from cups of tea (many cups of tea and a lot of cake!) to fish and chips in Whitby. From bicycle rides along the beach front to swimming to going shopping in Leeds.

Not only has Side By Side benefitted those with dementia, our volunteers love doing it too. We recently asked our volunteers for some feedback and this is what they said …”taking someone out is not difficult and is easy to do…”, “…. it’s really flexible and I can work it around my own personal life really easily. It’s a nice way for me to feel like I’ve given something back to the community and having fun while I do it.“

So, if you enjoy rambling, cycling, swimming or simply watching sport, visiting galleries and museums or supporting people to do the things they love, then we have a volunteering role for you.

Full training and support is given and all expenses are reimbursed. It could take as little as an hour a month and fits in around you! If you think this might be for you, contact either Bernie or Colleen in our Scarborough office, tel. 01723 500958, or by email at [email protected]
