New Year Greetings from ChemChina President Ren Jianxin

Dear colleagues, Happy New Year!

Year after year blossoms look alike, year after year people never remain the same. The New Year marks a fresh beginning for all of us. I wish to extend to you my best wishes. Wish you health, happiness,

pleasure and every dream come true in the New Year.

As the Chinese saying goes, if the family lives in harmony, all affairs will prosper. If we at ChemChina are also a big family, I want to thank you all for your efforts over the past years that we have made ChemChina a secure, stable and splendid family with notable performance amidst all adversities.

The prominent annual report of Adisseo, the business improvement project of Qenos, the One Rise Program of BSI and the ambitious investment plan of BSF are all highlights of the year that we are very proud of. We also welcome Elkem and MAI to be members of our big family. You are equally excellent companies in the world with brilliant teams and we are extremely prideful

to have you with us in the family.

Over the past year, I believe each of us has made impressive achievements. In fact, our individual well-being and growth are the basis for ChemChina's development. Advanced technologies, lean management, expanded markets and stronger profitability—all these visions will help sound the bell of wishes for each new year to come. And as our businesses grow bigger and stronger, we will be rewarded with more competitive benefit packages, greater respect and decency and broader career development paths. And as a family, we will have strengthened capacity to shoulder more responsibilities and give return to the society.

Looking ahead, we have the right goals, plans, energies, aspirations and actions. With all your understanding and supporting, we will make 2012 another year of great successes.

Thank you very much!

Wish you all happy new year and blissful families.

Ren Jianxin Receives French Legion of HonorJiang Bo

December 16, Bluestar held its 2011 Christmas evening gala in Beijing. At the gala, Ms. Sylvie BERMANN, French ambassador in China, on behalf

of the French government and President Nicolas Sarkozy, bestowed Legion of Honor to ChemChina President Ren Jianxin. This medal was originally established by Napoleon and has a long history and tradition. So far, only a few Chinese celebrities, including Mr. Tung Chee Wah, have received this honor.

Ambassador BERMANN noted at the ceremony that this medal was conferred by French President Sarkozy on October 28, 2010 in recognition of Mr. Ren's great contribution to the economic development of both China and France by investing in France and creating job opportunities there. Further, she said, "Bluestar has been operating in France for about six years and has become a bridge between the two countries. The development of Bluestar represents a success story of international operations of Chinese companies and has paved the way for interested Chinese companies to invest in France and embrace the European market." Ren extended sincere gratitude to Ms. BERMANN, saying, "I would like to regard this medal more as an honor of Bluestar, ChemChina and even the whole Chinese corporate sector, an honor for our 2500 employees in France and all of the 150,000 employees of ChemChina." Also present at the gala were officials of the French Embassy in China and the French Ministry of Investment, reporters from Xinhua News Agency, CCTV, People's Daily, Economic Daily and China Daily, senior executives and employee representatives of ChemChina and its specialized companies, foreign senior executives of Bluestar in China, technicians and their families.

Motherly Love on My Way up the Educational Ladder

Sun Yibing, Shenyang Chemical

When I was a small child, I started learning guzheng (a Chinese zither with 25 strings), an expensive musical instrument that was hardly affordable for my parents, given their low income. My teacher suggested a rudimentary model, costing only a few hundred Yuan, to my mom, but instead, my mom bought me a 3000-Yuan medium-quality guzheng nicely shaped and carved

from nanmu, a soft wood from evergreens, traditionally used in crafts, although she did so only after a tough decision process.

My mom cares very much about my learning progress, as is demonstrated by, among other things, sitting with me throughout my guzheng practice every day. I remember that when I first learned how to work with chords I was overwhelmed by the challenge of coordinating my hands. I was young and burst out crying, but my mom encouraged me to realize that this was not easy but was indeed possible, with her enlightening words, “Bingbing, I know this is very difficult for you, as this is very much like drawing a square with your left hand and a circle with your right hand at the same time. See if you can do it.” Next, she brought a mess of kite thread, saying, “now I’m going to roll up this mess of thread and you do the exercise. Let’s compete.” I was cheered up at these words, and the exercise went well. After a period of painstaking efforts, I finally learned how to play chords.

How time flies. I grew up even before I realized what was happening, but I never stopped learning to play the guzheng better. Late one night, I woke up to drink some water, only to see my parents’ bedroom was still lit. I opened the door and went in, whereupon my mom hurriedly closed a window on her computer and smiled at me. “What’s up?” she asked. “Nothing, mom. It’s so late! Get some sleep,” I responded and left the room after hearing a positive answer. After that, I forgot this episode, but mom reminded of that several days later when she brought me a book with a big smile on her face. “Bingbing, open it and see if you like it.” It turned out that mom had someone custom-make me a musical score book that contained pop music and TV drama interludes I was fond of.

All of sudden, I realized that mom had stayed up late that night preparing musical scores for me. I wept in her arms, seeing the title on the cover of that love-packed book, which read “My favorite guzheng music score collection——a product of mom’s love.” Below the title was my name printed on the cover of the book. “Take good care of it, ’cause this is the only existing copy of this book,” said mom, smiling.

Mom knows l itt le about musical instruments, but she is always there while I am learning to play guzheng. Memories might fade over time, but all the things my mom has done for me remain cherished in my heart forever, just like this book.
