Somewhere between enjoying free flowing alcohol and Bollywood hits, you realised that partying is hard work and doing it for a few days at a stretch can really take its toll. Now it’s time to get back to flow charts and business deals. Still, you really can’t return to your hectic routine  without a good detox (not of the chemical kind). We draw up the perfect detox plan. KEEP IT LIGHT WITH FRUITS In the days you have been partying, you have let go of your diet and had copious amounts of junk food and alcohol. Alcohol dehydrates your body, so drink at least two litres of water, accompanied with other fluids like green tea. Fruits and vegetables are also a must. Dr Richa Anand, chief dietitian, Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital, suggests you go on a one-day fruit diet that consists of melons, and citrus fruits. She says, “Those who have had a heavy few days could eat fruits or khichdi. Stay away from processed, junk and ready-to-eat food.” You will also have to get off alcohol and foodstuffs with heavy sugar and salt content as the stomach lining is under strain. Contrary to belief, starvation will not help you detox and lose the holiday  weight. Samreedhi Goel, nutritionist and personal trainer, Size Wise — the Exercise Studio, says, “Starvation causes muscles to break down. Put less load on the system by giving it the right nutrition. The correct food will hasten the process of releasing toxicants.” She draws up a detox diet (see box). TAKE IT SLOW AT THE GYM Taking days off from the gym would not hurt as much if you had not put on a few kilos. But hitting the gym in a New Year resolution infused vigour, is not the best thing. Nessha Bukht, dietician and branch manager Talwalkars, says, “Your body is dehydrated so do not move into the gym  with a hangover. Spend one day hydrating  your body. Initially, do not run too hard, too fast and for too long.” To psyche  yourself to hit the gym, Leena Mogre, director Leena Mogre’s Fitness, says, “Start by doing the exercises you like. Attend a group class as it motivates you. Don’t forget to stretch otherwise your body will get sore. The cool down time has to be increased too.” Althea Shah, general manager, Gold’s Gym, says, “Exercise helps increase the metabolic rate. Target the larger muscles first and then move on to the smaller ones.” If you celebrated New  Year’s outside t he city, exercising also helps you cope with the change in weather conditions and protects you from catching a common cold. sore. Nothing a few hours at a spa can’tsolve. To begin with, the ambience at a spais soothing and calm, a refreshing changefrom the noisy, stuffed atmosphere of aparty. Paramita Saha, general manager,Guy Kremers Eyecatchers Salon and ThaiSpa, says, “I would recommend a full body

massage and a body wrap. It consists of deep-skin cleansing, application of a scrubto remove dead cells, a massage to relaxand a body pack. It also helps you reduce your tan.” Nisha Jhaveri of Myrah — TheLuxury Wellness Spa, says to try theirmineral and algae body wrap that helpsrelease toxicants. Concentrate on the facialskin as well with an oxygen facial. Forhome remedies, Dr RohiniWadhwani, medical director,Skin Essentials, says, “For dry skin, add a few drops of olive oil

and lavender oil to a bucketof water whilehaving a bath. You couldalsoapply, for 10minutes, aface pack of raw milk andalmonds. If youhave oily skin, then apply lemon

and honey, whichalso helps get rid of the tan.”

They believe it isbetter to look forward to your day at work,

as this would make the transitioneasy. Rukmini Iyer, director, Exult

Training and Content Solutions, says,“Resolve to see work as fun and not as a

hardship.” Look at the beginning of the new year with positive goals.Brillian SK, Manager, CorporateHuman Resources, says, “After a well-deserved break, look atbringing in more fun at the workplace by trying somethingnew. Look forward to enhancingcollaboration with colleagues. One word of caution: Rememberto sleep well on Sunday.”If all fails, live by the saying:Work hard and party hard. You’ve

done the latter, now it’s time to work. Arun Vishwanath, founder, Trainers Forum, says,“Have clear priorities in terms of  what is fun and what is work.”

If you spent New Year’s Eve partying, think ofthe guys who made it possible and who had toclean up after you ambled off home onJanuary 1. And thanks to January 1 being aFriday, most of the hospitality industry had torush back to work.

MIXING THOSE DRINKSDevang Devsaria, bartender, AER Lounge,

Four Seasons, worked from 3 pm to 8 am onDecember 31. Since bartenders aren’t alloweddrink during shift, there was no question of ahangover. “I had a heavy breakfast, slept f ortwo-three hours, and then got back,” he says. The bartender will get a day off only onMonday, a day he plans to spend sleeping. His detox mantra: water. “At the bar, if a guestis too drunk, we offer a glass of fresh limewith salt. It cleans up the system,” he says.

Bar manager Tushar Mandal, who works atZenzi in Lower Parel, isn’t too much of adrinker but samples cocktails before

approval. And there were several on the lastnight of 2009 when they worked from 5 pm to6 am. His offers the most intriguing detoxadvice of all: more alcohol.

“Seriously,” he says. “After a night ofdrinking, when you finally wake up the nextafternoon with a bad hangover, drink 30 ml ofany alcohol with water or soda or cola. Alsoadd lime juice to it. It really helps in cleaningup your body and head and makes you feelbetter too.” But one must make sure onesticks to 30 ml, Tushar quickly adds. Unlessyou want to start the first week of the New

Year with construction workers pounding yourhead.

SPINNING ON THE TURNTABLELife isn’t easy on the DJ circuit either. DJAkhtar who has been dishing out mixes fortwo decades, played at the Renaissance onDecember 31 till early morning. “I’ll be workingtill January 4,” he says. His body has adaptedto his lifestyle. “I have breakfast at 2 pm, andthen go for gigs in the evening/night,” hesays. In the past five-six days, he’s had only

three hours of sleep. That’s the first thinghe’d like to catch, post January 4. “I’ll sleepand watch English movies. That’s my best wayof rejuvenating,” he says.

DJ Akbar Sami got lucky, as he puts it. Hewas to perform at a five-star hotel but planswere cancelled. He has never had a detoxritual since he’s always disciplined. “I hit thegym six days a week, I never eat wrong, anddrinking’s not my thing,” he says.

LAYING OUTA SPREADChef Bhairav Singh of the Renaissance Hotellikes his spirits, but controls his intake. Sincethe chef is an ardent follower of ayurveda, itshows in his detox diet too. “After December

31, I stuck to water and raw vegetables andfruits because the digestive system needsrest. My mantra is no rice, no meat, onlychapattis.” “Our January 1 brunch was alsomade to suit hangovers,” he adds. The staffgauge the in-house guests’ state beforesuggesting foods they could eat.

Chef Ananda Solomon of Trattoria doesn’tfeel the need to detoxify after any of thefestive seasons because he views his work asfun too. “What I usually do is visit a couple oftemples or a church on my way home. It helpsand I get a chance to say thanks,” he says.

HOW THE PARTY-MAKERS DETOX

THE NEXT TIME YOU PARTY, HERE’S HOW YOU COULD AVOID A HANGOVER...

Eat a heavy meal before drinkingHave a huge helping of milk and curd before you go

out to partyDon’t mix drinks and keep sipping on waterAvoid smoking (you should anyway) and stay awayfrom smoking zones

After a well-deserved break, look at

bringing in more fun at the workplace bytrying something new. Remember to sleepwell on Sunday
