ATV highly successful at time of purchaseSept. 6, 1985 was the closing date for the saleof the ATV Music Group of companiesworldwide. This sale included the assets ofthe Canadian operation which has un-doubtedly become one of the most successfulpublisher/producers of Canadian artists andwriters in Canada to date.

In a recent announcement it was revealedthat the offices of ATV Music Group,Canada (which was founded in June 1978 andfor which a sale agreement was reached inAugust - along with all of its worldwide af-filiates - between ACC in the U.K., ATV'sultimate parent company and MichaelJackson for a reported $471/2 million U.S.)will be shut down and the staff dismissed overa staggered period beginning Sept. 10 and en-ding the end of October 1985. A similar situa-tion exists for ATV's other officesworldwide, many of which have already beenclosed.

Vicki Walters, a 15 -year veteran of therecord/publishing business, the last 3 withATV, reports that "As a 'swan song' toATV's accomplishments, I would like to in-dicate that the Group in Canada was in themidst of what is potentially by far the mostsuccessful year in its history."

Says Walters, "The '85/'86 fiscal yearfor the ATV Group in Canada had all the ear-marks of a major year for the Canadianoperation."

Walters went on to explain that "Whatmakes the current international and Cana-dian successes of ATV's Canadian operationall the more noteworthy is that it has all beenaccomplished from a Canadian base and by arelatively small staff. Key members of thestaff, headed by Frank Davies (President) in-clude: Martha Smith (Royalties Manager),Michael McCarty (Creative Manager) Nancy

Theatre magazineunveiled for TorontoFashioned after the highly successfulPlaybill, that services New York City'stheatregoers, Tableau, a new digest targetedat Toronto's growing theatre market, wasunveiled (Sept. 17). The launch, orchestratedby publicist Gino Empry, attracted an im-pressive gathering of theatre VIP's includingEd Mirvish and his son David, plus mediapersonalities, which included the Sun's SylviaTrain; Harry Felton from the LimelightTheatre, Brett Halliday, Malcolm Black fromTheatre Plus, and David Lewis, President ofthe Continental Bank.

Tableau publisher Stephen Shawnpresented Ed Mirvish with an original draw-ing of the Royal Alexandra Theatre as well asa framed cover of the first edition of Tableauwhich featured the production of SevenBrides For Seven Brothers.

Tableau will service Toronto audiencesat The Royal Alexandra, Crest, LimelightDinner Theatre, and The Second City DinnerTheatre. Publisher Shawn is hopeful of ser-vicing all theatre locations across Canada inthe near future.

Besides being a program, Tableau willcarry articles on Canadian theatre in generalas well as personality profiles, record andbook reviews and fashion features.

Yu (Creative Promotion Assistant), andmyself as Assistant to the President."

Walters points out that "Like all Cana-dian publishers, ATV Canada has long beenunder the financial restraints of the WesternWorld's lowest mechanical royalty rate andthe shrinking local market for 'covers', tradi-tionally a standard publisher's mainstay,"continuing with "In the face of this supposeddrought, ATV Canada has continued secur-ing more and more meaningful 'covers' byCanadian artists like Doug And The Slugs,Holly Woods, Veronique Beliveau, Honey-moon Suite, Helix, April Wine, Darkroomand others in the last 12 months alone, andhas expanded its area of activities by securingfrom Toronto, many major international'covers' for its Canadian signed writers andtheir songs; together with a multitude of filmand television soundtrack synchonizationplacements, commercial/jingle usages andnumerous other 'permissions' involvingATV's copyrights - music and/or lyrics." Tothis end, Walters revealed that agreementscovering the first "major" advertising use ofLennon/McCartney copyrights in Canadahave been completed over the last few days. These uses involve rights fees reportedly wellinto the 6 figure area.

ATV is probably best known for housingapproximately 260 immortal copyrights ofLennon/McCartney, but is also the owner ofcountless pop, rock and country classics. These include Lucille (Kenny Rogers, LittleRichard), Jump and He's So Shy (PointerSisters), You Could Have Been With Me(Sheena Easton), Money Changes Everything(Cyndi Lauper), When We Make Love(Alabama), and Fool Hearted Memory(George Strait) to name just a few.

Of much concern, of course, with theclosing of ATV's Toronto office, is the futureposition of the many Canadian artists andwriters currently signed to ATV. It's assumedthere will be an official announcement byMichael Jackson or his representatives on thedisposition of the company in view of the ma-jor role ATV played in bringing internationalrecognition to Canadian writers and artists.

Second-hand awards report . . .!!We now know the CBC didn't televise theCanadian Country Music Awards in Edmon-ton, for whatever reasons, but the sad part ofthe whole thing is that when the CBC's Jour-nal reported on the awards, they got the filmfrom the Nashville Network. Really great! Tomake matters worse, the Journal reportedthat the awards again failed to interest a na-tional television production. A lack of com-munication, I guess!!! (EC: You're gonnaget letters!!!).

The passing of a legendHugh Joseph, one of the truly great recordingpioneers of this country, died last month inMontreal at the age of 89. Mr. Joseph washead of the Canadian RCA Victor Companyfor 40 years. When he joined the company itwas known as the Victor Talking MachineCompany. He is probably best known forlaunching the careers of 2 of Canada's mostfamous and successful recording artists -Hank Snow and Wilf Carter. Too bad thepassing of this legend has gone unnoticed bythe dailies. One of the few writers who didreport on the death of Mr. Joseph was EricMcLean in the Aug. 31st edition of the Mon-treal Gazette.

MCA's own "snowman" . . . ??MCA came up with a unique and, to say theleast, shocking promotional gimmick topump up their Miami Vice soundtrack. DaveWatt delivered the LP, along with a zip -lockbag that was loaded with this white substancethat resembled "snow"....and he suggestedthat we "throw a Vice -party." A very cleverpromotion, but I wonder who those 2 gorillaswere, that were following him in an unmark-ed car?

About that chest thumping . . .!!The question of the week . . . what was thefirst record store to open in the EdmontonWest Mall? The first store to give me a cor-rect answer will get a free subscription toRPM. (EC: That's a prize and a half!!)

Pope steals show at F of FIt was a big party, and it promised a star-studded lineup to close the Toronto Festivalof Festivals. None of the Hollywood moviestars attended, but our very own Carole Popestole the show. She recieved the "red carpet"treatment from the stargazing crowd thatpacked into the Imperial Room of the RoyalYork Hotel. Now the Festival is over and it'sjust a memory. (EC: Carole was radiant in amulti -coloured creation obviously not fromBi-Way or Honest Ed's).

WEA Wackers capture RPM CupOnce again, WEA's Wackers have taken theRPM Cup as they crushed A&A 14 to 3, inthe final game of the Ontario Music IndustrySoftball League. Now, if no one lifts the cup,it will be prominently displayed in WEA'snew lobby.

It won't go away!!!Someone brought it up again. Why do recordcompanies feel that "radio is the enemy."What would record companies do if radiodidn't program their hits? Bear in mind thatat no point did the industry make this in-sinuation. These are the words of one in-dividual. Let's just consider the source andleave it at that. (EC: It's just not going to goaway . . . is it?)

Now . . . about Robin's stag!!Nice of the industry guys to get together astag for Robin Ramm, who will be gettingmarried shortly. That has to be one of thedullest stags I've ever been to. There wasn'tany action . . . no action at all . . . . just theball game (the Jay's won that night). I leftbefore the broads arrived but I hear the onlyaction here came from Roger . . .who boogied alittle with the ladies. Then there was G.N.

quarters to the girls (EC:What planet did he come from . .quarters???) and when the girls made a moveon him . . . he left. I couldn't see his old mandoing that. Anyway, it was a nice night forRobin, and the gang raised $1,600 for him.

Those rumours still persist . . .!Rumours of the battle of the giants for thetakeover of . . . or by . . . which is very con-fusing, is still very hot street talk in NYC. )(EC: Why don't you wait for the I's to bedotted and T's crossed??) While one stock

as the release date for Once Upon A Time, the new album from Simple Minds.

The Scottish new music group have been pencilled in for 3 major Canadian dates, Montreal (Nov. 7), Toronto (8), and Van-

couver (18). They will return to Canada in February for an extensive coast -to -coast tour.

Produced by Jimmy Iovine and Bob Clearmountain, the album will be preceded

by the single, Alive And Kicking, which will ship to radio Oct. 2 and to retail Oct. 7. A

video of this track is also expected, along with an extended 12" single mix.

Virgin is planning extensive p.o.p. material to support the album and single, as

well as retail and radio promotions to sur- round tour dates.

"Once Upon A Time is the band's most dynamic and mature LP to date," said Merck

Mercuriadis, Product and A&R Manager for Virgin Records Canada. "And where Simple Minds were once seen as a developing act among names like Tears For Fears, U2, Big

Country, and Echo & The Bunnymen, all these comparisons are now left behind. Sim-

ple Minds are out in front on their own." With the single, Alive And Kicking,

Mercuriadis says Simple Minds have come up with their "most powerful and moving"

single to date. "The texture and chemistry shines through with the sound that is perfect

for radio and 1985," he said. "Where we

    - 1985

    - The most successful year nationally

and internationally the Canadian music scene

    has ever had!

We're proud to be part of that success and very proud

of our acts and their Juno nominations.

were once pulling album tracks like Water- front and Spread Your Love To Me, as

singles, Once Upon A Time has real singles on it, plus album tracks to follow the singles,

which are equally if not more impressive than Waterfront."

Once Upon A Time represents the band's seventh album. Their last LP, Sparkle

In The Rain, was released in February of 1984.

    Alert Records

Kim Mitchell has just returned from the Western leg of his Labatt's Blue Live spon-

sored tour, and will continue through Oct. 5, in markets in

Ontario and Quebec. Following 2 suc-

cessful months of dates with Bryan

Adams Stateside, the tour started late

August with a real hometown welcome

    - the Kim Mitchell Band tied the house

    record at the Kingswood Theatre

drawing a 14,500 capacity crowd. Kim's akimbo alogo album is curently over 120,000

units sold, and is still selling consistently after a year of release. Plans are now underway for

his next LP. Pre -production will begin mid - November, with a tentative release scheduled

for March '86. In the meantime, Kim's All We Are video, produced by renowned producer Joel

Hinman (WHAM, Billy Idol) can be seen on MuchMusic and MTV.

Alert is readying the new Box single en- titled L' affaiare Dumoutier (Say To Me) for

the week of Sept. 23. Taken from the All The Time, All The Time, All The Time LP (cur- rently No. 7 at CHOM in Montreal) the edited single will be accompanied by a mini- drama video and dance mix. The band is now

touring extensively throughout Quebec, with upcoming plans to tour the country in Oc-

tober and November. On behalf of Alert Music, I'm real proud

to congratulate both Kim Mitchell (Best Male Vocalist), and The Box (Most Promising

Group) for their respective Juno nomina- tions. Good luck guys!!!

Sylum have been in the studio throughout September, preparing a re-

recorded version of Break Down The Wall from their debut LP. The single will coincide with a video and a dance mix, a follow-up to the very successful club mix of I'm Impress- ed.

The Sylum LP will be released in England this October through Heavy Metal Records, with distribution through EMI. Lots to come in '86 from the Alert front.

    We'll keep you posted.!!!
