INSIDEWATLING

WELCOMEWelcome to the spring issue of Inside

Watling. As we write the sun is shining,

the skies are blue, it’s dry and it’s warm. A

great combination for productivity on site

with your Watling JCB machine. Spring is

a time of year that generally brings a lot of

hope and positivity and - even the recent

announcement of a snap General Election

in June hasn’t dampened the optimism

for the future. The UK construction

sector is in rude health. We continue to

enjoy historically low interest rates and

machinery is becoming more and more

efficient. This quarter we have excellent

deals on a range of JCB machinery and

genuine JCB parts; helping you to budget

and spread the cost of doing business.

We’re looking forward to another busy

summer and are here to help you find the

best possible solution to your plant and

machinery requirements.

LEICESTERLIONSOur business continues to expand with the appointment of Chris Mullins as Area Sales Manager - Wheeled Loading Shovels. He joined us in March 2017.

Chris, who lives locally to the Watling HQ, previously spent 10 years working for ABI UK; one of the leading manufacturers of static holiday homes. Chris’s territory included the whole of Scotland; an important area for tourism but no small area to cover nonetheless. He is very excited about the new challenge at Watling JCB;

“I am really looking forward to applying my business development skills to this new opportunity. My remit is to build new and develop existing relationships within the Watling area. I have had a warm and friendly welcome to the team and I am very pleased to be part of a professional, proactive and caring company.”

Watling JCB Sales Director, Andy Raine (left) with Lions promoter, Dave Darcy.

Watling JCB has a history of putting something back into the local community and this year is no different. We are therefore delighted to be

unveiled as the new team sponsor for top Speedway team, Leicester Lions. The partnership is a massive boost for the Lions which is now owned

by Damien Bates. Under his stewardship the track has been re-shaped and upgraded and is proving to be both an excellent and competitive course.

The team now proudly carries the Watling logo on their race suits and the Watling branding can be found on hoardings around the ground. Watling

JCB Sales Director Andy Raine is a lifelong speedway fan and started supporting the lions when his career brought him to the Leicester area;

“This is good, local exposure for Watling JCB in a sport that is different to what we have traditionally sponsored and so also gives us a whole new audience. Our deal preceded that of JCB’s sponsorship of the Williams Martini F1 racing team; which continues the racing theme. We are looking forward to working in partnership with the Lions management team and my hopes for the season are that we see competitive racing and the team manage to be more successful.”

Lions Promoter David Darcy said:

“We are delighted that such a high profile local company as Watling JCB - whose products and brand name are known the world over - has shown faith and confidence in what we are doing.”

We are celebrating some long service

awards here at Watlings and I extend

my personal congratulations to the

POWERGENERATIONTEAMUNIQUEDEALONLYAVAILABLEFROM

WATLINGJCB KEEPSONGROWINGWe’ve stepped up our support team again this year thanks to exceptional growth in our power generation business. Our investment in staff and

resources continues to pay dividends in increased sales and to ensure that we can provide the very best support on the market we have been busy

recruiting specialist engineers and building up exceptional stock levels of parts.

Lee Boardman was the first dedicated Power Generation Service Engineer to join the team.

Based at our Peterborough depot he has been kept so busy with routine maintenance and

servicing since he joined that we have since appointed four specialist power generation

engineers have joined our service team recently and we look forward to more joining over

the next few weeks. Steve Paskins, James Nixon, Sean Hamson and Shaun Parkinson are

all now lead engineers along with Lee.

Steve Edwards has added Power Generation

Manager to his area of responsibility at Watling

JCB and is overseeing the development of

the specialist power generation division to

ensure the company has the best industry

knowledge and experience at its fingertips.

Dave Phipps is our Power Generation Manager.

Exceptional knowledge of the sector, combined

with over 20 year’s sales experience, has helped

Watling JCB rapidly become a leading supplier

in the sector. New customers in wind farms,

aggregates, events and construction have been

able to benefit from his knowledge to purchase

the perfect power generation solution.

Our support doesn’t end there. Peter Wright, Peterborough Depot Manager, has also taken on

the specialist technical support for power generation along with Dan Hayre who now supports

Peter on the power generation control desk.

Fred Telfer was appointed last year Generator

Sales Specialist and is learning about the

industry ‘on the job’ from his experienced

peers. With coming up to a year under his

belt he is enjoying early sales successes with

sales to local organisations such as Leicester

County Showground and Tents and Events.

TENTS&EVENTS LINROYALEPOTATOESPOWEREDBYJCB

Leading Marquee and Equipment Hire

Company, Tents & Events Ltd, was formed

over 22 years ago and is run by father and

son team, Peter and Ben Newell. With many

years of combined experience under their

belts in the marquee and event management

business, the duo annually invests in the very

best equipment to ensure the business is fully

equipped with the right products for every

event; whether for a small family gathering, a

lavish themed party or a wedding.

At the end of 2016, Managing Director, Ben,

specified a JCBG66QS generator from Watling

JCB which was delivered complete with

LiveLink telematics and a trailer to transport

the unit from venue to venue. Powered by

JCB’s four-cylinder Dieselmax Stage IIIA

engine it has an output of 58.7kVA or 47kW;

more than enough capacity for the biggest of

events managed by Tents and Events. Once

on-site the unit provides power for three

distinct areas; catering - including ovens,

hot cupboards and fryers, front of house -

lighting and signage - and entertainment – for

microphones, speakers and instruments.

The G66QS was bought to replace an ageing

competitive unit and has made a great addition

to the current machinery fleet, which also

includes the unique JCB Teletruk forwards

reach forklift and a further generator. Ben’s

initial interest was stimulated by the JCB

Broadcrown tie up, but at the time there

was no plug and play rental spec. As the JCB

range extended Ben decided to re-consider

the options and was pleasantly pleased to

find the generator he required in stock and

immediately available from Watling JCB.

“We needed to replace one of our gensets as it was becoming tired and unpredictable. Reliability is mandatory in the events sector so we opted to take delivery of the JCB. Finding out that the unit was specified as standard with the LiveLink Telematics system was a bonus. We have trackers on all our other machines, but this does so much more than just tracking. We can not only remotely monitor its location but also its performance. We can see the phasing of the loads, monitor the fuel consumption and just make sure everything is running as it should be. Watling JCB was very helpful in setting up the deal and organising a swift delivery. Nothing is too much trouble and their knowledge of the power generation sector is second to none. We are seriously considering a second, slightly lower powered unit to see us through the forthcoming busy wedding season.”

Ben was also impressed that LiveLink is not only monitored from his own computer, but also

at the LiveLink centre at JCB. Within days of taking delivery of the G66QS the team at JCB

noticed a warning light and called to make sure there was no problem. In the event no further

action was required, but the level of support offers great peace of mind;

“It’s useful to know that our machine is also being monitored at dealer and manufacturer level – just in case there is something we don’t spot. LiveLink definitely offers so much more than a tracking service.”

As with all capital investments by Tents and Events, the generator was financed by the team at

JCB Finance. Irrespective of the piece of kit in question the team at JCB Finance offers a hugely

competitive payment structure that really helps the equipment fleet current.

Passion for good, fresh food and a field to

fork philosophy drives family owned business,

Linroyale of North Lincs, to produce the

finest quality potatoes. The firm specialises

in washing, grading and packing potatoes;

selecting the best from each crop and

preparing them for retail. The company

applied the same ethos to choosing a new

generator – deciding the best of the crop

was a JCBG275QX.

The generator delivers 250kVA (200kW)

of prime operating power at 50Hz to the

modern processing facility which is located in

the prime fruit and vegetable growing region

between Lincoln and Doncaster.

Stewart Clark, MD, needed a replacement

for his existing, competitive brand generator.

The key stipulation was reliability to ensure

continuity of operation in the factory. Uptime

and efficiency are crucial to the sector and

Linroyale invests in the most modern plant

and technology to ensure the operation is at

the cutting edge of production.

“A couple of our previous generators have not been as reliable as we needed them to be and the fuel economy was also disappointing. I did my homework and the JCB generator range promised – on paper - to offer the right level of power with improved fuel economy. We worked with Watling JCB to finalise the exact specification and did a deal for the G275QX. After-care was an important factor in our decision and a service contract was included in the package. In the event of any problems Watling JCB’s back up team comes out immediately to rectify the issue and the unit is now running beautifully and we are benefiting from considerable fuel savings.”

LiveLink telematics are fitted as standard to the G275QX; a feature that the customer is

using not only to monitor load phasing, fuel economy and faults but also to indicate factory

performance including critical performance of equipment connected to the generator. LiveLink

allows the customer to monitor the site remotely via his computer or phone to ensure the site

is working efficiently and effectively from anywhere in the world.

Indeed Stewart has a perfect example of just how beneficial the LiveLink telematics has proved

to be. A routine check on the system from home one weekend showed that the generator

was working much harder than normal. This was causing the coolers in the potato warehouse

to work abnormally hard; particularly strange for a weekend when the load on the generator

is generally lighter. Upon physical inspection of the storage area a batch of bad potatoes was

discovered and soon disposed of. Rotting vegetables produce heat which was forcing the

coolers to work harder. The discovery – thanks to LiveLink remote monitoring – managed to

avert potential customer deliveries, which would have resulted in call backs and enabled normal

working loads to resume immediately. A saving in both cost and effort.

“Our JCB generator not only provides a reliable power source but the telematics are proving very useful in assessing our work schedules. The saving in fuel each year comfortably pays for the maintenance agreement and with Watling JCB monitoring the generator, as well as us, the peace of mind the LiveLink system gives is invaluable. The generator has run already for 2000 hours and has not missed a beat. I am delighted with the outcome.”

The 540-180 HiViz has been specifically built to meet the needs of rental companies and contractors, offering reduced cost of ownership, faster

cycle times and best in class visibility, with improved lift height and increased forward reach. At just 2.35m wide and 6.26m long it is possible to

move two machines on a single curtain sided truck or low loader, reducing transport costs.

• 5% improvement in lift height

• 10% greater forward reach

• 50% lower SAE serviceability rating

• 50% service cost saving over 1,000 hours

• 20% faster cycle times

Increased capacity

With a lift height of 17.5m, the new machine can lift a load of 2500kgs to full height and has

a maximum forward reach of 13.5m. However, at just 11,330kg it is 7% lighter than its 17m

counterpart thanks to a strengthened four-stage, chain-driven boom and improved chassis

construction. It is powered by JCB’s Tier 4 Final Ecomax diesel engine delivering 55kW (74hp)

with no requirement for Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) additive,

reducing operating costs.

COVELLCONSTRUCTIONSWITCHESONTOJCBKings Lynn based Covell Construction is a

groundworks and construction contractor

owned by Kevin Covell and run by son,

James. AWA and street works approved, the

company has experienced huge growth since

establishing the business in 2008.

Kevin originally started out in 1987 as an

owner operator with his first used JCB

3CX doing groundworks for the local water

board and council. He owned a number of

JCB backhoe loaders over the years and

then bought his first mini excavator in 2003,

which was a competitive brand. In 2008 he

established family firm, Covell Construction,

buying a JCB 3CX Contractor in 2009 (which

is still in use today) to extend his fleet, as well

as a used JCB JS130 and two competitive

tracked excavators. Son, James, had been

working with him prior to the start of the

business and remains to this day. Despite the

business being launched at the height of the

recession the father and son team has been

simply flat out and continues to get busier.

In 2016 the company switched to JCB for

its next mini excavator and a new tracked

excavator – the popular JS145 and the JCB

67C-1. They haven’t looked back since

and the machines have helped to increase

productivity just at the right time.

James now runs the business and can be found at the controls of the various machines most

days of the week;

“Our whole fleet is now JCB and that is down to the first class service we get from Watling JCB. You just don’t find that elsewhere. We’ve also now added two more minis; the JCB 51C and 8026 to the fleet which have the smoothest controls I’ve come across. All our machines are brilliant; they are the best on the market for the work we do at the moment. Nothing is ever too much trouble for our local sales guy, Lee, either. He is so helpful and nothing is ever too much trouble.”

You can read more about Covell Construction on their Twitter and Facebook pages; where

regular machinery updates are posted.

SMITHCONSTRUCTIONSmith Construction has taken delivery of

the UK’s first new JCB JS370 with Tier

4 Final MTU engine. It was delivered this

month directly to the company’s workshop

in Milton Keynes for final checks before being

put on a local groundworks job along with

an older model. The driver, Colin Evans,

who has always previously insisted on having

a competitive machine, has subsequently

become a big fan of the JS excavators

and is very happily operating the new 37

tonne machine. With 10% fuel saving over

its predecessor, it’s not only less costly to

operate, but works for longer periods before

re-fuelling; saving time as well as money.

Ian Smith is owner and MD and has been

working with Watling JCB’s Mark Luff for

22 years; he’s also a fan of the machines;

“We’re particularly impressed with the new 37 tonner. It’s very powerful. Our operator loves it – and that’s a good enough endorsement. It’s as much to do with the back-up from the dealer as well though and Watling JCB really takes good care of us. The team is always very responsive, so it’s a good working partnership.”

In addition to their new excavator, Smiths

purchased one of the new JCB HM160T

Contractor Breakers to use with their existing

JS220. The breaker has 3 years warranty

as standard and proved to be a very cost-

effective option for the company. As a valued

customer Watling JCB left the demonstration

unit on site for a few days extra so that it

could work alongside the new unit to get the

job done that bit quicker.
