LOGAN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL Earns ‘Top Performer on Key Quality Measures’ Recognition from The Joint Commission. Out of 3,099 hospitals submitting accountability measure data to The Joint Commission, Logan Memorial Hospital was one of only 405 to meet or exceed the target rates of performance in 2010. Of the 405 hospitals named as one of the nation’s top performers on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, only 10 Kentucky hospitals were named to the list. Logan Memorial Hospital was recognized by The Joint Commission based on data reported about evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care and children’s asthma. To be recognized as a top performer on key quality measures, an organization must meet two 95 percent performance thresholds. First they must achieve a composite performance of 95 percent or above after the results of the accountability measures for which they report data to The Joint Commission are factored into a single score, including measures that had less than 30 eligible cases or patients. Second, they must meet or exceed a 95 percent performance target for every single accountability measure for which they report data, excluding any measures with less than 30 eligible cases or patients. Logan Memorial Hospital was recognized for achieving these thresholds when treating patients with pneumonia in 2010. “We understand what matters most to patients at Logan Memorial Hospital - safe effective care. That’s why the Logan Memorial Hospital staff members have made a commitment to accreditation and to positive patient outcomes through evidence-based care processes. The recognition we achieved would not have been possible without our excellent patient care team. Logan Memorial Hospital is proud to be named to the list of The Joint Commission’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures,” says Julia Murphy, Chief Nursing Officer.

First they must achieve a

composite performance of 95 percent or above after the results of the accountability measures

for which they report data to The Joint Commission are factored into a single score, including measures that had less than 30 eligible cases or patients. Second, they must meet or exceed a

95 percent performance target for every single accountability measure for which

they report data, excluding any measures with less than 30 eligible cases or patients.

Logan Memorial Hospital was recognized for achieving these thresholds when treating patients with pneumonia in 2010.

“We understand what matters most to patients at Logan Memorial Hospital - safe effective care. Logan Memorial Hospital added a new dimension in technology for the community recently. The hospital completed the first cardiology inpatient consult utilizing telemedicine. Telemedicine is the use of communication technology to provide interactive clinical care. Patients are able to visit with physicians in other areas. The physician captures video, still images, and patient data to make a diagnosis and plan a course of treatment. This invaluable tool enables patients to remain in their community but consult with world-class clinical experts.

Dr. Koenig at Saint Thomas Heart in Nashville performed the consult on an inpatient at the request of Dr. Patrick Hayden. Lana Kenner, RN and Sharon Brown, LPN assisted. This is the first time any hospital in the region has completed an inpatient consult utilizing telemedicine.

“The use of telemedicine is another step that we are taking to partner with Saint Thomas to improve patient care at Logan Memorial Hospital. I envision we will soon use this technology on a daily basis to connect patients and physicians to limit the need to travel outside of Logan County for cardiac care. ” said William Haugh, CEO at Logan Memorial Hospital.

LOGAN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL INTRODUCES A WEIGHT MANAGEMENT PROGRAMA new program has been launched at Logan Memorial just in time for the holidays. The therapeutic weight management program offers individualized programs for adults and adolescents. The program includes developing an appropriate exercise regimen, identifying healthy lifestyle changes, and losing up to 2 pounds per week-all in a medically supervised environment.

“We are committed to educating the community about obesity and the effects. People with moderate to severe obesity have a greater risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. They are also more likely to suffer from joint and back pain,” said Jeff Stevens, PT and Director of Physical Therapy at LMH.

In order to be eligible for the program, patients must talk to their physician and, if appropriate, obtain a prescription. A clinical evaluation will then be performed by the Physical Therapy team.

Logan Memorial is pleased to announce the winner of our Christmas Card Design Contest. Bethany Pearson, daughter of Penny and Timmy Pearson, submitted the winning design which will be used for Logan Memorial’s employee Christmas card. Bethany is a seventh grader at Olmstead Middle School.

The contest was open to all children or grandchildren of Logan Memorial employees. Contest rules suggested that the design should “depict the Christmas or holiday season, reflecting the theme of Logan Memorial Hospital.” Entries were judged on originality, creativity, artistic and visual impact and content. Cash prizes were awarded to the winner as well as second and third place finishers.
