#1 Seeded Boys Soccer Keeps Winning! Top-seeded Rincon/University
quickly disposed of No. 16 Gilbert
Higley on Wednesday night for its
12th straight win, earning a trip to
the Division II state quarterfinals.
The Rangers, who won 5-0, host
No. 9 Phoenix Sunnyslope on Sat-
urday at 2 p.m.
Rincon/University controlled the
pace of play Wednesday night with a
quick score by senior Jesus Ruiz in
the seven minutes into the match.
Freshman forward Sam Lossou then
tacked on two goals a minute apart
to give Rincon a 3-0 lead heading
into halftime.
“I was just tired of not scoring,”
Lossou said of his first postseason
action. “I wasn't getting much play-
ing time and today I just stepped up
and scored. It just gives us more
intensity and energy to put more in
the second half.”
Seniors Brian Vu and Chris Cooper
added goals in the second half to
put the match out of reach. Senior
goalkeeper Cole Hoffer, who had a
relatively easy day thanks to a
stout Ranger defense, made 11
saves, including a big one on
a penalty kick late in the second
half to preserve Rincon/University’s 11th
shutout.
“Our defense was the most organized its
been all season,” Hoffer said. “Once the
defense settled in and took over our of-
fense had free reign.”
Hoffer, who has been on varsity all four
seasons, helped the Rangers record
their first postseason win in his four-year
tenure. Hoffer believes mentally, getting
this victory out of the way will help Rin-
con/University in the second round.
“They know what it is and means to win
a playoff game,” Hoffer said. “It off their
shoulders, now its just game-after-
game.”
