You might have on new clothes, a new teacher, maybe a new school, some new friends, etc. I have more vivid memories than most because I changed school often as a child – would you believe 12 schools in 10 cities between pre-K and 12 th grade? The “rush” one gets from new beginnings is present here at Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. We have some new officers, new committee chairmen and some new members. After all the power outages our batteries are charged and ready to take on the new challenges associated with the frat and the community in which we live. At the end of a storm the sun comes out and makes everything fresh and bright! We have gone through a stormy period within Alpha but with the general president election completed I look for a brighter day ahead. After 106 years it will take more than a stone on the tracks to derail our progress towards making matters better for the brothers and others. After looking inwardly for many months wondering what breaking news would come out each day, we can refocus our attention to outside worldly matters. Here at Mu Lambda we have much to do this fraternal year and blessed to be in a position to do so. I firmly believe that we are fortunate to have the resources to make a large, positive impact. With the luxury of 150 talented brothers we are a force to be reckoned with in DC. It would be a travesty if we did not help our fellow man to the maximum extent feasible. Of course, we will have a few fun- filled projects along the way – man does not live by bread alone! Last year I asked you for six hours per month, including the chapter meeting. That request is still on the books. Don’t leave the committee chairmen hanging out there. They are motivated to lead the chapter to do a number of positive things and need your involvement to succeed. The success is not for them individually, but Mu Lambda as a whole. During the executive board retreat we talked about the Mu Lambda “brand.” This brand is one of success, accomplishment, top shelf, intense pride, etc. – all criteria associated with APhiA. In Army ROTC the instructors admonished us to either lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way! Mu Lambda is definitely not going to just get out of the way - whether it is community service, health programs, youth assistance, or voter registration. The Mu Lambda house is one of the finest in the country, but is it just window dressing? I think not. It is an edifice where we conceive, develop, and often execute programs making a positive impact on metro DC and beyond. Today we start a new chapter in the annals of Mu Lambda history. I am excited about the potential of this august group. The e-board is excited to lead their individual efforts. If, no, when you are asked to serve consider it an act of faith in your capabilities. Thank you in advance for being an active part of Mu Lambda’s present. I know you have a myriad of fraternal home options in this area. Bring your enthusiasm to the meeting next Thursday. We intend to maintain that “new class” excitement through June and beyond! Monthly Newsletter Editor: Jason Clark Issue No. 1 - September 2012
