Blocks of ice were packed in sawdust and shipped to China
to trade
New England traders became very good at shipping and trading for goods that were valuable and in high demand.
Trade with the country of China increased for things like “China” dishes,
spices, and silk.

U.S.S. Philadelphia
accidentally ran aground while patrolling near
Tripoli.
Defenseless, the crew was captured and taken as prisoners by the Barbary
Pirates.

The U.S. Navy did a secret mission led by Lt. Stephen Decatur to sink the Philadelphia so the Barbary Pirates could not use it. Decatur and his men quietly sailed in at night, boarded the ship, and set it on fire which made it useless to the Barbary Pirates.

U.S. marines were sent to attack Tripoli. The marines had to march over 500 miles to make the attack. Tripoli was caught off guard by the surprise land attack. In 1805, the ruler of Tripoli surrendered and signed a treaty promising not to interfere with American ships any more.I promise not to interfere with

FRANCE
Britain and France went to war again in 1803 and American traders were taking
advantage and trading with both countries.
As the war went on, both Britain and France began capturing American trading
ships … again. Each one said we can’t trade with their enemy.
