Accoi'ding to an order issued fromthe office of the postmaster generalof the United States to become effec-tive August 1, 1931, it willbe possibleto send larger and heavier packagesthrough the mails by parcel post.The new plan is to be followed withthe purpose of increasing the useful-ness and availability of the parcelpost as a convenient means of trans-portation and delivery for merchan-dise.

The new ruling will permit themailing of parcel post packages¦weighing up to 70 pounds and havinga maximum combined girth andlength of 100 inches to all eightzones. Formerly this class of mailwas limited to packages weighing70 pounds or less in the first threezones and not more than 50 poundsoutside of this district. The presentmaximum size is a combined lengthand girth of not more than 84 inches.However parcels measuring morethan 84 but not more than 100 inchesin length and girth combined theminimum postage charge shall be thezone charge applicable to a 10-poundpackage.

Mail of the fourth class or parcelpost must weigh in excess of 8 ouncesand includes books, circulars, andother matter wholly in print (exceptnewspapers and other periodicals en-tered as second-class matter), proofsheets, corrected proof sheets andmanuscript copy accompanying same,merchandise (including farm andfactory products), and all otheravailable matter not included in thefirst or second class. This mattermust not be over the maximum sizeand weight limits set nor can it bein any form or kind likely to injurethe person of any postal employee ordamage the mail equipment or othermail matter and not of a characterperishable with period reasonablyrequired for transportation and de-livery.
