Robin brings a wealth of technology knowledge and experience in applications such as Canvas and Panopto. She will also be working with applications including Portfolium. Experienced faculty have all seen that dreaded email subject line. What can we do to avoid this end of semester stress for both students and faculty? Setting up a simple grading scheme, using rubrics, and spending a little extra time making sure students understand expectations can help. These tactics and others are collectively known as Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT). Please keep in mind that reimbursable spending for advising isdesigned for advisors to spend extra time with their adviseesWhen an advisor is advising a student and purchases food ordrinks the amount can be reimbursed up to $100 per year

(not per term) However this only applies to food and drinks and thereimbursement request form must be accompanied by the original receipt If you have questions about whether an advising expenditure qualifies forreimbursement please refer the Fall 2017 Advising Handbook for details orcontact CTLT at ctltsuedu

Important Reminders and Updates for FallCritically important Students who have not completed their

registration by the end of AddDrop (5 PM the last day) will not be able to usefederal financial aid for course registration that is completed after this time Financial Aid Please send students who appear as ldquoinactiverdquo in Canvas toHornet Central and impress upon them that it is important to get theirregistration corrected and holds removed prior to the end of the adddrop periodto avoid financial aid complications and missing class material Attendance Please take attendance in Canvas during the AddDrop periodPlease note that students whose registration is in incomplete status due to non-payment or have other ldquoholdsrdquo on their accounts will appear as ldquoinactiverdquo underPeople in Canvas and will not appear in the Attendance list Student Holds Students who have holds on their accounts will not be able toaccess course materials in Canvas The UP status (ldquounpaidrdquo) will no longer belisted in WebAdvisor Payment is due August 4 2017 for Fall 2017 classes No Shows At the end of the AddDrop period you will need to report studentswho have never attended your class(s) The Registrar will be circulating a linkto the form via email at the start of the term

PowerPoints That Fill The Whole ScreenFor PowerPoint 2011 and Earlier Versions

If you are presenting lessons using PowerPoint slides you can fill theclassroom screen completely side-to-side and top-to-bottom using theWidescreen page setup Almost all of the screens in SU classrooms now usethe widescreen format instead of the previous smaller screens therefore youmay want to convert or create your PowerPoint presentations to fit the largerscreen A new help file that explains how to change your PowerPoint to the Widescreenformat is now available from ACT Visit the CTLT Resource Repository or clickHere for direct access to the help file Please contact Val Gangwer atvgangwersuedu with questions

Using Panopto With Sierra OS There is a known bug in the Panopto Recorder when using it on a

Mac with the Sierra Operating system The secondary display window thatnormally displays the content you are recording will instead display a grayscreen with the words ldquoScreen Capture In Progressrdquo The recorder is likelyrecording your video content but it will not be displayed inside the frame whileyou are recording

This is only occurring with the Mac Sierra OS as far as we areaware Panopto is currently working with Apple to resolve theissue If you have questions or need assistance contactGeorge Hoffman ghoffmansuedu

Required Panopto UpdateOn July 21 Panopto will require Panopto for Windows Remote Recorders andPanopto for Mac to be upgraded to version 54 or above which includesimportant bug fixes

Important note Any users still on OS X 109 or earlier will need to updatetheir operating system to continue to use Panopto for Mac Users on prior versions of our client apps will be prompted to upgrade whenthey run Panopto for Windows or Panopto for Mac Users will need to downloadand install the latest version of the app

In Canvas go to Panopto Recordings-gtCreate-gtRecord a new session-gtDownload Panopto

The 14th Annual Elon Teaching amp Learning Conference will beheld on Thursday August 17 2017 at Elon University North Carolina Thisyearrsquos conference theme is Teaching Choices Learning ConsequencesSessions will explore evidence-based strategies for creating significant learningexperiences for students as well as the impact both intended and unintendedof our teaching choices We will also reflect on what both we and our studentscan or should learn from those choices The opening plenary speaker will be Dr David B Daniel Professor ofPsychology at James Madison University whose work focuses on ldquoevidencedemonstratedrdquo knowledge that can be used to inform individual teaching

PowerPoints That Fill The Whole ScreenFor PowerPoint 2011 and Earlier Versions

If you are presenting lessons using PowerPoint slides you can fill theclassroom screen completely side-to-side and top-to-bottom using theWidescreen page setup Almost all of the screens in SU classrooms now usethe widescreen format instead of the previous smaller screens therefore youmay want to convert or create your PowerPoint presentations to fit the largerscreen A new help file that explains how to change your PowerPoint to the Widescreenformat is now available from ACT Visit the CTLT Resource Repository or clickHere for direct access to the help file Please contact Val Gangwer atvgangwersuedu with questions

Using Panopto With Sierra OS There is a known bug in the Panopto Recorder when using it on a

Mac with the Sierra Operating system The secondary display window thatnormally displays the content you are recording will instead display a grayscreen with the words ldquoScreen Capture In Progressrdquo The recorder is likelyrecording your video content but it will not be displayed inside the frame whileyou are recording
