    Why GPS ?

Location - Determine a basic position

Navigation - Getting from one location to

    another Tracking-Monitoring the movement of

    people and things

    Mapping-Creating maps

    Timing-Providing precise timing

    How Does GPS Work?

    METHOD OF OPERATION.

Satellites transmit signals to equipments on the

    ground.

GPS receivers passively receive satellite signals,

    they do not transmit.

Each GPS satellite transmits data that indicates itslocation and the current time.

GPS signals move at the speed of light.

By capturing signals from three or moresatellites exact location is determined.

4th satellite is used for time accuracy.

Each GPS satellite has atomic clocks on board.

    GPS Guided Missile

Potential target areas are mapped out ahead oftime, identifying potential targets by their location(height above sea level, latitude, and longitude) withrespect to the GPS satellite system. When an attackraid is planned, the GPS guided missile isprogrammed with the targets GPS coordinates andthe topology of the region surrounding the target. When the missile is then launched, it reads itscurrent GPS position and plots a course to the

target. Additional software onboard the missileenable the missile to follow the terrain in itsapproach to the target. This makes it difficult to spotthe missile on radar or to intercept the missile by anyother means.

The FutureDual/Tri systems (using GPS & Galileo, GLONASS, etc)

Hybrid/Augmented systems(also using cell towers, TV signals, RFID, Wi-Fi, etc.)

LBS (Location Based Services) advertising, via cell phone, mobile ads (busses, taxis), service location/lookup, etc.

    Additional Satellites

    Additional Ground support (augmentation)

Components the size of a credit card (for under $10.00)

Better clocks in receivers (only need 3 satellites)

Dual (or Tri) Frequency GPS receivers

    Track L1and

L2 (& L5?) satellite signals for greater accuracyEnhanced GPS Ability to use low-quality satellite data

(typically filtered out by masks) for estimating positionsunder canopy, inside buildings/cars, etc.

Upgraded satellites sending 3 signals (instead of 1) from eachsatellite, using slightly different frequencies (bettereliminate errors)
