NEW SUNDAY TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION JUNE 23, 2002 Lots of pre-university options at Sunway • By R.V. Veera [email protected] S UNWAY College, an MSC-status institution which aims to be the country's premier higher education institution offers a wide range of pre- university courses. One of the most widely recognised pre- university qualifications offered at Sunway College is the Cambridge A-Level programme offered since 1989. It is one of the more popular courses offering students a wide range of subjects which include accounting, economics, law, mathe- matics, chemistry, physics, biology, further mathematics, history, general paper and English. The A-Level qualification is a favourite amongst students as it is internationally re- cognised and accepted for entry into univer- sities and professional courses in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, India and Singapore. In addition, it is also accepted by Monash University's branch campus in Malaysia and all the twinning degree courses offered at Sunway. Last summer, former A-Level students of Sunway College, Tan Sin Dee and Tan Kar Tean graduated with first class honours de- grees in Engineering from University of London's Imperial College. Sunway's A-Level students also managed an outstanding achievement of 100 per cent passes with close to 60 per cent obtaining at least one A and the top 10 per cent scoring 4As in the Cambridge Boards June 2001 examinations. However it is not "all work and no play" for the A-Level students at Sunway. Acknowl- edging the importance of a healthy and balanced lifestyle, the College places equal emphasis on various non-academic activi- ties. In March, students from the A-Level programme together with those from other programmes participated in leadership and team building camps in Langkawi and Bentong, Pahang. Sunway's A-Level students are also known to organise and partake of sports, social as well as charity events on campus. Sunway College also offers other Pre- University programmes namely Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY), Aus- tralian Matriculation (AusMat) and Cana- dian International Matriculation pro- gramme (CIMP). The college also offers IT, hospitality, professional, financial and Enghsh language courses and twinning degree programmes with renowned universities in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. The Sunway College campus in Bandar Sunway is staffed by a team of caring, ex- perienced professionals. It offers an aca- demic block housing classrooms, lecture theatres, comprehensive first-class science and computer laboratories, and a language laboratory. For on-campus activities, Sunway has a multi-purpose hall, a multi-purpose field and courts for badminton, netball, basketball, volleyball and tennis. Among other amenities are a bookshop, launderette, convenience store, student centre, a student concourse and prayer room. International students or those from out- station will be impressed with the College's accommodation facilities. One of only a few private higher educa- tion institutions to offer such facility, the campus houses a comprehensive residential facility within the grounds. The facility comprises 150 units of fur- nished hostel-apartments that can accom- modate 1,188 students and each unit is equipped with a lounge area, two bathrooms and a pantry with a refrigerator. Owing to an increasing demand for on- campus accommodation, Sunway College has acquired a new block of 111 units of condominium hostels which can accommo- date up to 666 students. The Sunway Monash Condominium Hos- tels is less than five minutes walk from the college grounds and hostelites may opt for single or twin-sharing rooms with the option of having air-conditioned rooms.
