New standards brochure is published

The Society's Standards Secretariat has published a new bro- chure that describes the national and international activities of the

Society and the standards publication program. A general view of the operation of the S-committees is also presented. Copies of the new brochure are available from the Standards Manager (no charge).

Noise standards index is now available

A new index' to noise standards is now available from the Acous-

tical Society. The index is a detailed compilation of international and national standards (from many countries) on noise and related top- ics. The new document is a revision of ASA STDS INDEX 1-1976.

Progress in noise control requires the stimulation of technology to develop methods for reducing the emissions of sound energy at the source. Standards and regulations on acoustical noise provide the stimulus for progress in the area of noise control. An important aspect of the application of technology to the reduction of noise is the availability of information. This index is intended to provide access to the key national and international standards related to noise.

This Index classifies the standards as follows:

Primary Noise Standards and Test Codes-methods of noise measurement and rating, Instrumentation Standards-instruments used for the measure-

ment and evaluation of noise, Other Related Standards-terminology, physiological and psychological acoustics, etc. This Index includes: (1) International Standards; (2) American

National Standards; (3) other U.S. standards; and (4) other national standards (non-U. S.).

The new ASA Index to Noise Standards (ASA STDS INDEX 2-1980) is available from the Acoustical Society at a single-copy price of $12.00. Contact Dept. STD, Back Numbers Department, American Institute of Physics, 335 East 45th Street, New York, NY 10017. Orders not accompanied by payment will be billed for a $ 2.00 handling charge.

Acoustical Society publishes new sound power standard

The Acoustical Society has just published a new standard on de- termination of sound power level of noise sources. The new docu- ment is the counterpart of a draft international standard, ISO DIS 3744. American National Standard Engineering Methods for the

Determination of Sound Power Levels of Noise Sources for Essen-

tially Free-Field Conditions over a Reflecting Plane, ANSI S 1.34- 1980, describes an engineering method for determination of the sound power level of noise sources in indoor or outdoor environ- ments. The standard contains information on instrumentation, in- stallation and operation of the source, procedures for the selection of a measurement surface, methods for the determination of sound pressure level on the measurement surface, procedures for the calcu- lation of sound power level, and techniques that can be used to qualify the measurement environment.

Society of America. Contact Dept. STD, Back Numbers Depart- ment, American Institute of Physics, 335 East 45th Street, New York, NY 10017. Orders not accompanied by payment will be billed for a $ 2.00 handling charge.

Machinery vibration standard is published by ASA

American National Standard Techniques of Machinery Vibra- tion Measurement, ANSI S2.17-1980, has been approved by ANSI and published by the Society.

This standard is concerned with vibration measurement quanti- ties, equipment, and procedures involved in operating machinery. Calibration of vibration measurement and calibration equipment are discussed in the document. The standard has application to preven- tive maintenance programs, equipment selection, and equipment quality.

The new standard is available for $15.00 from the Acoustical

Society of America. Contact Dept. STD, Back Numbers Depart- ment, American Institute of Physics, 335 East 45th Street, New York, NY 10017. Orders not accompanied by payment will be billed for a $ 2.00 handling charge.

American National Standard Sound Level Descriptors for Deter- mination of Compatible Land Use, S3.23-1980 has been approved by ANSI and published by the Society. Compatibility of various human uses of land with the acoustical environment is assessed in
