The latest collections from F4W suppliers for the new season featured in this issue show what a great job they are doing. There’s a fantastic offer of exciting designs now coming through that’s sure to tempt your customers to get decorating!

There will be plenty more for launch later on, and F4W designers give some key looks here with their trends for 2017. These include new

twists on popular sellers such as surface effects: realistic marble, strong tactile and textured looks, and a move to re-create the opulence of luxurious fabrics by simulating crushed velvets and shimmering weaves.

The luxe look is a key trend, making further use of innovative printing techniques including new embosses to imitate embellishments, beads, embroidery, sequins and threads. Even

more glitter, shine and sheen effects are forecast, with a new emphasis on an elegant vintage look, including distressed damasks.

Geometrics continue to move on with more textured, 3-D and smaller scales, while the new botanicals highlight some truly beautiful designs, and tropical/jungle/lush leaf patterns offer their own refreshing take on Greenery, the Pantone Colour of the Year, to revitalise walls.

An exciting start to the spring decorating season With lighter and warmer days ahead, spring is the ideal time to give homes a fresh look, and the new season’s wallcoverings offer a great choice of tempting designs

Janet Nuttall, design manager, Belgravia Decor

Hepburn: Classic damask

and ornamental patterns combined with glamorous finishes, embroidery, glitter and sequins. Luxurious velvety natural tones enhance this look.Suzhou: Geometrics continue to be big news, with a focus on a smaller scale and neutral tones softened by textures. Key looks include minimal patterns, pared back to simplistic lines, plus ordered geometrics with an unexpected twist.Delamere: Organic textures, tactile basket weaves and natural wood with unusual grains and finishes. Quartz: Crackle and marble patterns, with an extra wow factor from glitter, embossing and metallic finishes.

Guatemala: Botanicals, lush foliage and moody forest imagery. Leaf motifs merge with geometric patterns and natural textures in a move towards a less graphic look.Kenya: Ethnic-inspired patterns, ikats, animal skins and traditional woven textures are given a contemporary twist.Key colours: Warm natural tones create a neutral backdrop with warm white, cream, natural/grey-brown, chocolate, stone and clay. Accent colours add character and vibrancy: gold, mustard and pollen yellows lift the mood, bringing warmth to darker spaces. Botanical greens, from deep bottle and moss to chartreuse, lime and sage, team with whites and natural textures. Autumnal russet, copper and pumpkin bring warmth and energy to neutral schemes. Subtler tones of blush pink and Wedgwood blue enhance and create feelings of light and space.

David Shaw, designer, A S Creation UK

Surface effects: Industrial materials, concrete, metals,

oxidised and inventive optical looks. Patterns: Geometrics, simple precise lines, symmetry and chevrons. Botanicals, silhouette trees, tropical leaves, butterflies and birds, such as flamingos and peacocks. In this design area there is a huge contrast between subtle tonal effects and adventurous vibrant colours for dramatic statements. Traditional archive patterns: Damasks or scrolls are teamed with

stripes, enhanced by glitter detail to add value; marble effects in monochrome are evident; metallics create a look of decadence, glamour and sparkle with embellished detail. Oriental: Traditional designs with a contemporary twist, including blossom and oriental style prints in strong pink, blues, red, black and neutrals. Textures continue to dress the story, with tactile, natural weaves offering interesting detail. Innovative techniques introduce new elements. Green hues are prominent, plus grey to complement bolder colours, and bronze, in classic tones to add warmth.

Vicki Ellmore, design manager, Fine Decor

Industrial Chic: A move on from

the popular reclamation trend, industrial chic continues to expand with the use of realistic marbles paired with natural materials such as wood and stone, combined with highly graphic and geometric shapes, creating an overall effect of depth and structure for interiors.Global Fusion: Interesting distressed techniques, decorative geometric shapes and overlaying of abstract

imagery are all key to this trend. Tactile effects, grasscloths and handwoven rattan are key elements, with rich accents of blues, mustards and neutrals.Jungle: Tropical and bold botanical prints continue to be a strong trend. Oversized dramatic prints in vibrant greens, teals and dark vivid peacock blues add drama and create a statement for any room.Luxe Glamour: Glitz and glamour, opulent textures, metallic surfaces and luxury continue to dominate in home interiors. Shimmer and shine in neutral tones offer an elegant and sumptuous style.

Vicki Kitson, design manager, Rasch UK

Interior trends for 2017 are an

exciting and eclectic mix, from Transglobal Style through to Scandi Geometrics, Boutique Hotel, Modern Country Floral and Colonial Tropical, with Jungle and Safari animals adding a whimsical touch.Texture is key across all trends, based on industrial concrete, aged plaster, patina and distressed wood effects, terrazzo, verdigris, precious minerals,

marquetry and herringbone wood patterns, natural grasscloth, cork and decorative weaves.Tactile surfaces are created by luxurious velvets, 3-D and embossed patterns, blurred photographic prints, artistic, painterly and brush-marked effects.Key colours: Palettes feature bold statements, from Pantone’s Greenery, the Colour of the Year, marine and inky blues, teal, Chinese red, saffron yellow and blush pinks to monochrome, combined with brass and gold metallics to create a truly striking look.

Ornamental luxury: Belgravia Decor’s new Tiffany Lustre.

Full of fresh energy: A S Creation’s Harmony in Motion by Mac Stopa.

Shimmer and shine: Fine Decor’s new Sparkle Hummingbirds.

Eclectic mix: Curiosity from Rasch’s Porfolio.

Nicola Bradshaw, design manager, Holden Decor

Luxe textures: While the industrial textured

look, ranging from brushed metallics to reclaimed wood effects is still visible, there is also a real trend for emulating luxurious fabric. Crushed velvets, grasscloths and shimmering threads give a very opulent and tactile look. Using photorealistic or emboss techniques to imitate embellishments and weaves is a very strong trend. Sequins, beads and threads all look amazing using both these techniques. Geometry: Geometrics - especially the hexagon and diamond - have made a great comeback, and have now moved on from flat designs to more textured/3-D effects. Retro/

Scandi designs, simple chevrons, waves and mandala shapes are also still apparent.

Carnival: Tropical designs continue to be in abundance, with large leaf patterns, rich multi-coloured geometric/textured weaves, zebra prints or just simple cacti or pineapple motifs. There are so many home accessories around to complement this trend. Vintage Elegance: Beautiful botanicals with shimmering butterflies, as well as distressed and ombre damasks, all in a soft colour palette add elegance and sophistication to any room. Oversized florals on rich dark grounds bring real drama and look extremely grand. Delicate Nature: Simplified or watercolour leaves, silhouette trees, floating feathers and organic textures.Key colours: Shades of grey with yellow, navy, teals and forest green. Dusky pinks/corals and off-whites, as well as soft neutral tones.

Luxe textures: Shimmer Diamond from Holden Decor’s Opulence.

Decoron Wallpapers celebrates 50 yearsCongratulations to Decoron Wallpapers! The independent specialist store in West Bromwich recently celebrated 50 years of trading, and is looking forward to many more years supplying customers with the best in decorating materials

Retailer focus

Ron Welch opened Decoron Wallpapers in the Carters Green suburb of West Bromwich in 1966, and the store held a well-attended celebration on the day of its 50th anniversary last August with special offers, giveaways, a prize draw for customers – and a cake. It’s very much a hands-on family firm: Ron continues to work six days a week in the store, which is managed by his son Mark, with daughter Karen looking after the office. Sales assistant Cath Gould works full-time as a key part of the team, and Mark says her valuable contribution makes her an adopted member of the family.

Ron enjoys the business as much as ever,

and says Decoron is looking forward to many more years of supplying the best in decorating materials. “Our aim has always been to offer quality, choice, value and service, and we have stayed true to what we believe. We have a good nucleus of customers who take pride in their homes and always come to us when they want to change their decor,” he says.

He pays tribute to his wife Jan, who sadly passed away in 2014 after 48 years of working alongside him and helping to develop the business. Mark and Karen are the third generation of the family to work at Decoron - Ron’s mother and Jan’s father also contributed

to its early success. The original business opened as a leased shop three doors away before moving to the current property in the High Street, and when the opportunity came up to buy the freehold a few years later, Ron took it. He extended the selling space on the ground floor, then later together with Mark substantially increased the choice of wallpapers on display by converting the stockroom into a spacious and attractive 1,000 sq ft showroom on the first floor.

They made their biggest and boldest move in 2008, just as the banking crisis was hitting the country. A former pub next door came up

for sale, and they took the brave decision to buy and convert it. The purchase almost doubled the store’s existing 2,500sq ft, enabling a major reorganisation of the ground floor sales space to give different products their own larger dedicated areas.

“It was a big investment for a small family business,” says Mark, “but we’ve always looked to the future. It meant a total re-build, and took two years to complete, including converting the flat upstairs. The whole project cost around £300,000, and it’s paying off, as we’ve had a very good response from customers. Now that we have a bigger display area for paints with their own department, we’re selling more of them – we really needed the extra space.”

Mark joined the business 35 years ago after working in it as a Saturday boy while still at school, and admits to being “hooked on wallpaper”. He enjoys the selling side and the interaction with customers as well as seeing

the latest designs and selecting ranges. “Wallcoverings are the backbone of our business,” he says. “Our reputation is built on our service, and we’re known for our breadth of product as well as for having something different. As an independent store, we like to offer an independent choice. I try to select what our customers will want, but don’t ask me how - I think it must be instinct!

“We do know what sells - the nature of much of the local housing stock helps us to do well with blown and heavyweight vinyls. We stock over a hundred ways of Italian vinyls from the leading suppliers, and customers want to come in to feel the product and check the quality before making their choice, even though many patterns are available on internet sites.”

So far Decoron has steered clear of trading online, preferring to concentrate on the bricks and mortar store. “The business is performing well at the moment, and it suits us to stay the way we are for now,” says Mark. “An internet

operation is an additional sales channel, and we’d be naïve to completely dismiss setting one up. I’m sure we’ll have to put something in place eventually, but just now I don’t know whether it’s worth the extra investment involved and the increased overheads of running it.”

Internet trading is just one of the many changes that have happened in the industry over the years that Decoron has been in business, including the departure of some well-known names, the entry of new suppliers, and a new trade exhibition - Fashion4Walls. Mark is a keen supporter of the show, and has attended every one since the first was held at Mottram Hall in 2006. He invited sales assistant Cath Gould to accompany him to visit last August’s show at the Titanic, Liverpool, and she was equally enthusiastic about the opportunity to see so many products from the leading suppliers in such a great venue.

“The Titanic is a stunning hotel, and the Rum Warehouse is a fantastic space to see the new collections,” says Mark. “Fashion4Walls is such a friendly show, and it’s really grown over the last few years - there’s nothing like it. The suppliers always treat us very well, and we also enjoy the opportunity to relax at the dinner in the evening after the show, and socialise with people from other independent specialist businesses. It’s a very friendly industry, and it’s so refreshing to see how we’re all working together for the same goal, to promote and sell wallcoverings.

He concludes: “There are so many wonderful patterns, colours and textures available in wallcoverings now, and it’s definitely a fashion industry. We’re selling people a vision of the finished decoration, and I believe these quality products need to be presented in the best way possible. The industry needs its specialist retailers to continue to do this - and to carry on being successful.”

Striking metallics and novelties

New Tiffany Lustre and tactile texture

All three new Mylar® ranges, Eve, Gia and Serena, are printed on ultraweight foil vinyl. Eve is a stunning design with a striking and unique dimensional effect, combining a large-scale Mylar lace medallion with a fine vertical texture, and is available in four colourways.

Gia creates the effect of distressed fabric to give an impression of vintage textiles woven from metallic threads. The large-scale damask and coordinating distressed velvet texture come in silver, steel, gold, pearl and ivory.

Serena is based on the success of the Serafina in-register vinyl range. The popular damask, stripe and texture have been combined with Mylar printing technology to create contrasting effects of matt metallic texture and shine in three colours: steel, gold and silver.

Also new is Solitaire, a heavyweight in-register vinyl with a soft shimmer that can be hung vertically or horizontally. Its fine texture is overlaid with a subtle geometric metallic pattern to give the illusion of precious fabric.

Both the latest additions to Muriva’s popular range of novelty designs are printed on heavyweight paper and enhanced with metallic glitter gel ink. Bright Lights, Big City is a new cityscape collage with black and white photographs of the Brooklyn Bridge and the New York skyline by night plus a variety of detail shots, and Tropical Mood is based on interior designers’ mood boards, with colourful sketches and images pinned to the board.

A stunning addition to Belgravia Decor’s Tiffany Lustre range refreshes the enduring popularity of this collection. The new glittering Italian in-register vinyl features a decorative ornamental design (see page 2), luxuriously embossed with embroidery and shimmering sequins. It is complemented by an intricate pleated background texture, also available as a sequin-studded coordinate.

Also new is a selection of versatile wallcoverings reflecting the latest trends with their focus on tactile textures in warm, earthy tones. Amalfi is a sophisticated Italian in-register vinyl collection simulating a delicate sequin structure.
