Let’s Keep the Momentum Going! Spring 2011 What do you get when you combine a paralyzing cold front, dancing stars and 700 advocates marching on Washington? You get momentum. In February we held our annual Alzheimer’s Day at the Legislature and, despite the paralyzing ice storm that hit Santa Fe, we had a fantastic day. Our speakers that day included Representatives Jeanette Wallace and Conrad James, Senators Richard Martinez and Jerry Ortiz y Pino, family advocates Lisa Vigil and Liz Alarid, and our State Ombudsman, Sondra Everhart, who all spoke so movingly about the impact of Alzheimer’s disease. The Day at the Legislature was followed by our first annual Gala, held at Embassy Suites on April 1. I would like to thank Enchantment Dancing Studio owner Chip Hindi and his professional dancers for working so hard to get our Dancing Stars prepared for a highly competitive and hugely entertaining event. While I knew that the event would be successful, I had no idea it would be over- the-top fantastic. Not only did the event help us raise needed revenue, more importantly it helped us raise awareness of the Association and the services we provide. The excitement and enthusiasm from the event remains palpable in our office and in the Albuquerque community. In May, Melissa Spiers and I joined more than 700 advocates from around the country at this year’s Advocacy Summit. In meeting with our federal representa- tives we learned that indeed Alzheimer’s is beginning to be seen as the public health concern we know it to be. It is because of the advocacy of the Alzheimer’s Association that President Obama signed into law the National Alzheimer’s Project Act. This law will create a national plan to overcome the Alzheimer crisis and will ensure the coordination and evaluation of all national efforts in Alzheimer research, clinical care, institutional, and home- and community-based programs and their outcomes. We invite you to join us in that advocacy. One way to get involved is to join us on 9.10.11 as we Walk to End Alzheimer’s. As many of you know we entered this year with a rebrand of Memory Walk. In order to really gain momentum we will have all of our Walks across the state on the same day. So anywhere you are in NM you can walk with us on September 10 because we will be walking in Farmington, Raton, Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Roswell and Las Cruces—from one end of the state to the other. Let’s keep the momentum going! One of the people most responsible for the momentum at the Association is John Attwood whose term as Board President is ending. While he remains on the board as Past President, I thank him for his leadership and strategic thinking. He has truly made a difference. This spring the Association lost a terrific champion in Representative Jeanette Wallace of Los Alamos. We so appreciate her support over the years for our cause and for the passion she brought to issues affecting seniors in the state. She was one of the speakers at this year’s Alzheimer’s day at the Legislature and I would like to share a quote from that day: “We tend to forget that our neighbors who are caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients need our support all the time. When we talk about the cost of Alzheimer’s we usually think financial cost, but the cost of Alzheimer’s is a cost to us all on the inside.” GOVERNING BOARD Dan Monte, President John Attwood, Past President Tori Chouinard, Vice President Leo LaBarge, Vice President Brad Cates, Treasurer Paul Shank, Secretary Myles Copeland, Director Charlie Blanco, Director Marcy Baysinger, Director Toby Kessler, Director Lisa Lachmann, Director Barbara Michels, Director Mary Galvez, Member at Large CHAPTER STAFF Agnes Vallejos, Executive Director Siobhan Mitchell, Operations Director George Miles, Finance Director Chris McCaffrey, Greater Albuquerque Regional Manager Melissa Spiers, Outreach Director Megan McCormick, Development Director Vacant, Program Director Melissa Muniz, Special Programs Coordinator Theresa Burch, Special Projects Coordinator Christina Boothe, Events Coordinator BJ Davis, Northeastern Regional Manager Vacant, Southeastern Regional Manager Nicky Phillips, Southwestern Regional Manager Tammy Austin, Northwestern Regional Manager CONTACT INFORMATION 9500 Montgomery Blvd. NE Suite 121 Albuquerque, NM 87111 505-266-4473 or 1-800-272-3900 www.alz.org/newmexico FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

In the immortal words of thatfamous NY Yankees catcher, YogiBerra: “When you come to a fork inthe road…take it.”

About six months ago, I facedthe reality that my tenure asPresident of the Board would beover in May 2011. We needed tofind someone that would “take thefork in the road,” and not just takethe fork but determine the correctfork to take. I can’t think of a betterway to communicate my deepappreciation to Dan Monte, SeniorVice President and Trust Managerfor Los Alamos National Bank.Dan has accepted the opportunityto serve as President of the Boardof Directors of the Alzheimer’sAssociation, New Mexico Chapter.Dan has expertise, wisdom and

compassion, three qualities thatwill serve our Board and our Statewell. Dan understands the effectsof the disease.

Let’s reminisce for just amoment…

Much has been accomplished inthe last few years. Special thanks tomy two previous predecessors,Mike Lord and Greg Gillogly. They were a constant support andresource for me. I can’t expresshow many times they were therewhen I needed their wisdom andguidance.

It has been a pleasure to workwith our Executive Director, Agnesand her very capable staff. We haveseen tremendous growth in termsof the size of the Association butalso in the reach of the Association.

We have a long way to go tomeet the needs of every person inNew Mexico with Alzheimer’s andthe caregiver’s and families ofthose touched by the disease.

Please continue to stay involvedand if you aren’t currently involved, join us.It has been my pleasure to serve.

Development Director Hits the Ground RunningMany activities and events

were already underway on manylevels when Megan McCormickstarted as our new DevelopmentDirector in February. But being a seasoned marketing and publicrelations professional, as well as a longtime marathon runner, she took everything in stride andgot busy doing what needed to be done.

Her job consists of many different roles, but theessence of Megan’s work is bringing in funds. To dothis, she works in tandem with Melissa Spiers inOutreach (to help develop donor relationships with bothbusinesses and individuals) and with Theresa Burch inEvent Planning (Memory Walk, Golf Tournament,Gala). She oversees the logistical elements of variousevents to make sure everything goes smoothly (such ascoordinating volunteers, helping committee chairs, get-ting permits, hiring vendors, etc.). She works with agrant writer to make sure applications are correct andon time. She recruits volunteers.

This Albuquerque native has lived in several cities

across the country from Detroit to Denver and, whilepursuing a career in marketing and sales, has also beena very active mom. She has a daughter age 13 and twosons ages six and three. She was delighted to comehome to Albuquerque and thoroughly enjoys a busyschedule with her family that includes bike riding, ath-letics and church.

Even with a home life that is constantly in motion,Megan maintains a high level of energy and enthusiasmbecause, she said, she sees her job as “a labor of love.”She learned about the Alzheimer’s Association whenshe first moved back to New Mexico and was workingat a local assisted living facility. She “fell in love with thepeople and the process” and volunteered for anAssociation fundraiser last year.

One of the pleasures of her position is coming upwith new ideas for fundraising events such a“Spinathon” or a motorcycle bikers “ride.” She hasbeen talking with a local theater company that is pro-ducing “On Golden Pond” this fall about a special pre-view of the show for donors. A portion of ticket saleswould go to the Association. Stay tuned to see whichideas are used, and feel free to share your fundraisingideas with Megan — when she’s not on the run.

A grant from the federal government, matched byour state government, is helping New Mexico veteranswho have Alzheimer’s disease and giving their care-givers get much-need informationand support.

The Alzheimer’s Association ofNew Mexico is administering therural component of this grantthrough a new Special ProjectsCoordinator, Melissa Muniz.

Melissa is a fourth-generationSanta Fean who has 14 years ofexperience in the hospitalityindustry in group sales. Whileworking with associations and nonprofits she noticedhow focused, happy and well-rounded these clientswere. She realized wanted to get more involved withthe community and be able to go home at the end of theday with a feeling of gratification and accomplishment.

The Alzheimer’s Association’s need for the right per-son to coordinate the Veteran’s Project fit perfectly withMelissa’s ability to disseminate information and coordi-nate services while fulfilling her desire to “do some-thing worthwhile.”

Melissa drives to rural areas — recent trips includedArtesia and Roswell — to visit places where senior vet-erans are likely to be found, including VFW halls,Veteran’s Administration hospitals and senior centers. She takes informational brochures and arranges forAlzheimer’s Association staff to conduct “SavvyCaregivers” training courses.

There are about 180,000 veterans of all ages in NewMexico, and about half of them are over age 60. Themajory of veteran services are concentrated inAlbuquerque, which leaves rural areas underserved. The Veteran’s Project specifically targets those veter-ans who either have Alzheimer’s disease or who arecaring for a loved one with the disease. Providing prac-tical tools and teaching caregiving skills, the program isto help them develop a sense of control.

The Savvy Caregivers training covers dealing withways to cope with the daily life of dementia care, under-standing and responding to Alzheimer’s behaviors, howto use friends, family, health care providers and theAlzheimer’s Association for advice and help. It alsostresses self care for the caregiver.

A single mother of an active four-year-old daughter,Melissa enjoys “outdoorsy” activities such as trips tothe zoo and parks.

For more information, or to ask for assistance pro-vided by the Veteran’s Project, call 1-800-272-3900.
