2015 Swimming Gala

2015’s Swimming Gala opened to a kaleidoscope of

colour as each house paraded down to the pool in

excitement and anticipation of the big occasion that

was about to take place.

As the event kicked off the first

win came from Ndirande in the

Junior girls 100m medley closely

followed by success from

Chiradzulu in the boys. Last year's

winners were starting to get

nervous as Soche wanted to

remain victorious and hold their

prestigious title as champions.

Whilst the competition was heating up so was the

braii with delicious egg and bacon rolls on offer

courtesy of the PTA. As the food was consumed

cheers grew louder and the individual medley came

to an end with Bradley Ferguson claiming first place

for Chiradzulu in the boys event and Ammarah Pinto

soaring into first place for Soche Eagles in the girls

competition.

Meanwhile down on the football field students from

each house were busy building bridges with Mr

Peake and Mr Colliver. After last year's raft success;

this year students had to build a bridge that would

get their House Manager safely across the pool.

Ndirande, with the

help of Mr Colliver

were hard at work

securing floats to

large bamboo

sticks in the hope

that it would take

their fearless

leader, Mr Gunda

to victory. Mrs

Gausi waited with

baited breath as

her team worked

together to build a

reliable structure.

Following last

year's raft event she was rather nervous and keen

to stay dry. Chiradzulu were quietly confident that

they could once again transport Mr Ferguson across

the dark depths of the pool with ease as Soche were

hoping Mr Putheke had his arm bands close by as

the main focus was on the decorative and visual

aspects of the bridge.!

Back up at the pool records were been broken and

video footage been called on to determine who

won the 50m boys freestyle. With times of 30.60

and 30.6 Constatinos squeezed in another victory

for Soche as Biko was awarded second place for

Chiradzulu.

As the supporters and competitors stopped for a

break Ndirande were in the lead with 248 points

and last year's victors slipped quietly into fourth

place on 199 points.

Determined to succeed the Open boys 100m back

crawl opened with the Michiru Lions clawing back

as they attempted to hunt down the Ndirande

dragons and the coveted swimming gala trophy.

When the individual events drew to a close all of

the Houses were still determined to win as they

prepared for the Relay competition. Michiru Senior

Boys put in an impressive performance to rival the

competition but Ndirande Junior and Intermediate

boys responded and the results were looking good

for the Dragons. Chiradzulu and Soche were

beginning to feel the pressure and pulled out some

excellent performances to prevent their

competitors getting the trophy. However, Ndirande

girls fought back leaving spectators on the edge of

their seats. Mr Gunda and Ms Tampa were ecstatic

Page 3: New School Minibus Newslettersaints.project4.webfactional.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/151204... · New School Minibus Another highlight of the first term was last weekend's Swimming

as the wins kept coming – the House was alive and

students were getting excited at the prospect of

history being made with an Ndirande win!!

As everyone waited anxiously for the winners to be

announced the Synchronised swimmers put on a

wonderful performance and the bridges were

brought up to the pool.

Despite her best efforts to

stay dry Mrs Gausi once

again went for a swim this

year. Mr Ferguson showed

great speed as he was the

first to get back to dry land

while Mr Putheke admired

the patriotic bridge his

House had created and placed across the azure

pool. After careful deliberation the judges awarded

Ndirande 1st place in the raft competition with

Soche taking 2nd, Chiradzulu 3rd and Michiru 4th.

It was just after midday and the guest of honour Mr.

Iain Scott was called forward to present the medals

and trophies to the winners. The school were

delighted to have Mr Scott present at the Gala as

his hard work and dedication to sport in Blantyre is

inspirational to the students. Mr Scott has worked

tirelessly with Ndirande Rugby to make the sport

accessible to people of all ages not to mention raise

the profile of the fastest growing sport in Malawi in

our locality.

When the overall result was announced there was a

cacophony of sound as Ndirande claimed the

Swimming Gala trophy. The atmosphere was

electric as people cheered and applauded the 2015

victors. Overall a fantastic day was had thanks to

hard work and efforts of students, teachers and

parents alike. Miss A Mahon, Head of English

Yr 12 Students Host World Aids Day Conference

On Tuesday 1st

December,

Worlds Aids Day, 13 Year 12

students hosted 7 different

schools, colleges and

universities at SAIntS in order to

lead workshops and discuss the

important issue of HIV/Aids

awareness.

The institutions present were Chichiri Secondary School,

Malawi College of Accounting, Joyce Banda Foundation,

Zingwangwa Secondary School, University of Malawi

Polytechnic, St Patrick’s School and Southend Secondary

School; representative from each institution participated

in a wide range of work workshops concerning HIV/AIDS

including its transmission, history, living with and

awareness of HIV/AIDS – all students present

participated in engaging discussions and shared their

knowledge and thoughts about each topic.

The Year 12 students have been working tirelessly to

perfect their workshops over the last few weeks through

intensive workshops and practice.

The event closed with a talk from Dr Mumba who is

based at Queens Hospital and who works with HIV/AIDS

sufferers daily; this talk was very informative and gave all

delegates an important understanding how the condition

is being treated in present day Malawi – this was

followed by a thank you from Mr Smith who would like to

see more interaction between all institutions present and

a continuation of similar conferences in the future.

Well done to all that participated to make the event such

a success. Mr P. Stubbs, Head of Year 12

Commemorating the Fallen

Following on from Mr Percival’s excellent assembly on

the theme of Remembrance on the 11th

November, some

Year 9 History classes looked at war poetry. We analysed

some famous poems that had been written in the

trenches and discussed their utility as sources. We also

looked at how they got across the feelings of anger and

fear that many brave soldiers felt before having a go at

writing some ourselves: Mr J Wilkinson, Head of History

The war brought tears, frowns and sorrow

Gas, bullets, shells and so and so

We saw shells, more shells, they fly and blow

Our hands were stained with blood

Our feet taken by trench foot

Trenches filled the red liquid flood

And in our rotting graves we were put

Now we rest in Flanders’ Fields

Where the blood-red poppies grow

Remember us for what we did

And our souls will remain glow Michael C 9S

If I should die, I shall die as a lion

If I should die, I will surely never be the same

If I should die, let my loved ones know I was a lion

And I was led by donkeys

I saw thousands die in seconds

We will always cry with open hearts

My, my, my

May their hearts run around heaven

Like real heroes do Asante K 9S

After a field where horror and misery once took place

Bright red poppies come to eye

Symbolising where we lie

Blood and tears were shed and now we lay

The disintegrated dead

Fighters, soldiers, men

Poppies replaced where they had been

Appeal from Mr Izzett

A reminder from Mr Izzett that we are looking for any

people who are willing to come in to school to make a

short presentation about their work and answer

questions from students. This is part of our students' life

skills lessons and very important information to help our

students make informed choices. If you can help, please

email Mr Izzett: [email protected]. Many thanks.

Duke of Edinburgh sixth form trip

The first sixth form trip from Luwawa Forest Lodge in

Vipya forest to Kande Beach on the Chinteche strip took

place from the 17th

to the 22nd

of November. Nineteen

Year Twelve students took part in the expedition where

students camped for five nights and hiked over 80KM

across four days!

The trip was a great success with all students completing

the expedition. The students were required to carry all

their equipment and food for the trip with some bags

weighing more than 20kg. During the expedition the

students learned how to navigate using a compass and

map, set up camp, work as part of a team and support

one another.

Day one required the group to hike 22km from Luwawa

Lodge through the Vipya Forest's undulating landscape. It

was probably the toughest day's hike as the bags were

heavy and there were many hills to climb. However we

were rewarded with excellent views from the camp as

seen below.

The second day was a beautiful hike where the students

hiked to the top of Kawandama summit and where the

first glimpse of our final destination, Kande Beach, could

be seen. The screams of joy could be heard from miles

around when the students could first see the lake!

Day three

was spent

mainly

descending

down

through

woodland

areas

where we covered 22Km and camped at Lifupa Primary

School. The hiking was excellent, with shade provided by

the trees and gave Mrs Gaunt an excellent opportunity to

practice her bird calling technique!

The fourth and final day's hike was very hot as we were

descending further to lakeshore level. We woke early to

make the best of the cooler temperatures and arrived at

Kande Beach just before midday. Once there' everyone

took the opportunity to relax by the lake and enjoy some

time to rest from the 80km we had hiked over the

previous few days.

Congratulations to all

the students who came

on the trip. It really

tested the students'

characters and put

most students in a

situation they had

never been in before.

All the students were a credit to themselves for the hard

work and determination they had shown.

Massive thanks should go to Mr Dodd, Mrs Gaunt and

Mrs Yiannakis for coming on the trip and making it such

an enjoyable experience.

Hopefully this can be the first of many Sixth Form Duke of

Edinburgh trips to this area.

Drug awareness: Ecstasy

Following on from the Drug awareness evening which

was held during the first half of term, we were made

aware of a case study regarding a young gentleman in

Australia who had been taking ecstasy and had a very

negative experience. Here are some facts about Ecstacy

taken from:

http://www.drugfreeworld.org/drugfacts/ecstasy.html

Ecstasy is illegal. The Drug Enforcement Administration

classifies it as a Schedule I drug, a description reserved for

dangerous substances with no recognized medical use.

Other Schedule I drugs include heroin and LSD. Penalties

for possession, delivery and manufacturing of Ecstasy can

include jail sentences of four years to life, and fines from

$250,000 to $4 million, depending on the amount of the

drug you have in your possession.

Tragically, Ecstasy is one of the most popular drugs

among youth today. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime

Page 6: New School Minibus Newslettersaints.project4.webfactional.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/151204... · New School Minibus Another highlight of the first term was last weekend's Swimming

estimates Ecstasy users to number approximately 9

million worldwide. The vast majority of users are

teenagers and young adults.

Mixed with alcohol, Ecstasy is extremely dangerous and

can, in fact, be deadly. So widespread has been the harm

of this “designer drug,” that emergency room incidents

have skyrocketed more than 1,200% since Ecstasy

became the “club drug” of choice at all-night “rave”

parties and dance clubs.

Please take time to watch the video and share any

relevant information with your child/ren. Mrs A. Gaunt

Yr 13 BTEC Travel Group Visit Majete

Yr 13 Travel & Tourism students are linking up with

Majete to prepare a Business Plan in order to improve

the attraction; as part of their assessment, students

visited Majete and had an in depth presentation and

discussion with the Tourism & Marketing Manager,

Shelley Preece.

The

presentation

outlined the

history of the

attraction as

well as the

strategies and

procedures

that go into

managing a game reserve; this provided the learners with

a fascinating insight into the workings of Majete.

Following the talk, students had the opportunity to go on

an escorted game drive which was led by an experienced

guide – we bumped into lots of different animals and

spent some considerable time surrounded by elephants

and their two calves, this was a very tense but

unforgettable experience.

The students and staff thoroughly enjoyed their visit but

now the students need to go away and consider their

business proposals before their formal presentations in

January – it is great to see our students working in a real

working environment and producing work that really

could make a difference to an existing attraction

Senior Boys' Hockey Update

This term the Senior Boys Hockey team have played

two friendly matches against the Nyala Club side.

The first match saw us witness a 3 – 0 defeat but

when we played them again, we improved to 2 – 1

defeat so we were much happier with the result.

Next term will see training take off in earnest as

more matches will be organised as we enter hockey

season.

Saints Hooligans Go All The Way

For the last two weekends the Saints’ Hooligan rugby

team participated in the Men’s Southern regional and

National 7’s competition; both kindly sponsored by

Superior Halaal and generously hosted by Saint Andrew's

International High School.

The first weekend

consisted of Men’s 7’s

Southern Regional

competition. We

started early in the

morning with 14

eager players in the

team and a fresh new

kit. The blazing heat

was overwhelming.

The 8 teams were

split up into two pools. The top 2 teams from each pool

would play each other in the semi-finals and the winners

would compete in the final. We kicked off the

tournament against Ndirande Impala B in flying colours

with a strong win. The adrenaline filled team continued

the great performance throughout the group stages to

earn a deserved spot in the semi-finals, topping the

group by beating Ndirande Impala B, Luchenza Red Ants

and Complex Jaguar B. The semi-final game was a

complete change of tempo but we were more than

prepared for it. With an excellent performance from the

team, we were through to the final of the southern

men’s regional final. The exhaustion was evident in the

squad due to a long tiring day. But we were all excited

and eager to take on the Complex Jaguars A in the final.

The “Chaa Su Waka” roared through the grounds. The

final kicked off into the late afternoon and the crowd

Page 7: New School Minibus Newslettersaints.project4.webfactional.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/151204... · New School Minibus Another highlight of the first term was last weekend's Swimming

were backing us. Complex Jaguars scored early on but we

then quickly returned with an incredible chip and chase

down the wing by Bradley F to equalize the score. Just

before the end of the half, Baz Scordis chipped the ball

behind the opposition’s defence which was chased and

was scored me, thanks Baz. The team was battered and

fatigued. Nevertheless, we found the strength from each

other to push through to the end. The score was tight

until Baz Scordis scored a tremendous try to ensure our

win. The first step was complete, Southern regional 7’s

champions. Stand out players from the tournament were

Chris G who is our new found Jonah Lomu (RIP) of the

team, fiery Tino Y, tearing up the pitch, Yanhko C and

Andoni T both putting a machine performance and

tenacious tackling from Jared N. Sadly there were three

injuries/ absences to the team for the following week;

athletic Tayne B, rookie Sofus W and veteran Baz Scordis

whom all played a big part in the tournament and were

deeply missed in the following tournament.

A week later and the squad was down to eleven men.

The National 7’s tournament started with a moment of

silence for the great Jonah Lomu. We then played

Lilongwe

Rugby Club

and started

the

tournament

with a

magnificent

win. The

momentum

carried on

throughout

the tournament to the next game with another win

which (wasn’t an easy one) over the Hippos Area 25 also

from Lilongwe. The team was through to the final of the

National 7’s. The win was there in our hands for the

taking but we need to play better than we had for the

past two weeks. We had many injuries and Captain Sam

Scott had a torn leg muscle and was unable to play. The

“Chaa Su Waka” roared louder than ever before. The

team stepped on to the pitch. The game kicked off and

the intensity rose. Hearts put on the line for each other.

The second half came and the score was still 0-0. Late

into the second half, there was a break in the line from

the agile Tom B who successfully set up the incredible

Bradley F for a try. The crowd screamed with delight. The

team held out until the final minutes. SAIntS Hooligans

had done it. A feeling of immense satisfaction came over

us and the realisation hit. We are the champions of the

National 7’s tournament! We most certainly could have

not of done it without each individual player, the support

from friends & family, the school staff, Jackson and our

two knowledgeable, helpful and wise coaches; Mr

Ferguson and Mr Lawrence.

Congratulations to the instrumental Bradley F who

scored 13 tries. The prominent Dumi K played to his full

ability even though he was marked by two players or

more at one time. Once again, well done boys you made

history, the first mainly schoolboy team to win the Men’s

Malawi National 7’s competition. By Samuel S

Saints Football B-team pull off incredible comeback

"Who are we? B-team! What are we? a team!"

This is the chant of the not-so-mighty Saints B team that

don't sit in the same public spotlight as the famous and

revered A team, but are nevertheless, still a football

team (most of the time).

Misery, Depression and Frustration set the scene at half

time, when the B-team players, sweaty, groggy and

exhausted, walked off the pitch trailing 4-1, after a

brilliant volley, a free kick, a header and an own goal set

them way behind. The squad for the match itself had

been a last minute collaboration of people who were

walking aimlessly around the school grounds that

afternoon.

At this point, even the prospect of a draw was

impossible, and the players were even preparing to

forfeit the match, the only thing holding them back was

the fact that they were getting picked up at 3.30 anyway.

As the ref. signaled for the players to return to the pitch,

the demoralised lot walked back into their battle

stations, taking none of Coach Wilkinson's motivational

words to mind.

It was at this, hopeless moment, that something

incredible happened, something that could only be done

by the unpredictable form of the B team. A hopeful lob

pass tore the opponents' defense apart, allowing young

Mubelele to hammer the ball into the back of the net.

This set the score to 4-2, but more importantly, a fresh

hope and thirst for a comeback had entered the players

minds. Incredible determination spread like wildfire

amongst the players, and the defense turned from cotton

wool to a brick wall, and shut down all offensive options

for the opposing team, keeping the ball deadlocked in

their half.

It wasn't long before B-team got to the peak of their

form, netting in two goals in quick succession to bring the

score up to 4-4, a momentous achievement, and morale

was now an all time high. The final 3 minutes of the game

was a hectic montage of both sides trying to grab the

Page 8: New School Minibus Newslettersaints.project4.webfactional.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/151204... · New School Minibus Another highlight of the first term was last weekend's Swimming

golden goal and go home with a win, and the highlights

of this frantic period was an open goal opportunity that

was "Air Botswana'd" well over the crossbar, and a

header that wavered merely inches from the post, both

of which would put the B-team ahead at 5-4. However on

the other end of the pitch, a fantastic diving save, a

miscommunication between a defender and the man in

the #1 jersey that caused the ball to roll dangerously past

the open goal (thankfully they failed to capitalise on this)

and a deadly free kick strike that edged the crossbar,

kept the saints from 'drawing the short straw' in the

potential tiebreakers.

The final whistle came right in the heat of the action, and

the B-team strutted off the pitch with a new found

respect for one another. It was a fantastic comeback that

could never have happened if every player on the pitch

didn't have complete faith in one another's abilities, An

amazing comeback and a great way to end the season,

final score 4-4. Leurin P

Fisherman Article - Focus on Michiru House

As part of our Fisherman catch up, this is Mrs Gausi's

write up reflecting on successes on the sporting arena a

fund raising in 2014/15:

It has been an amazing year for Michiru this year with a

lot of victories in a number of house competitions more

especially in Year 7s and Senior boys. The changing of the

house logo from ‘Magic’ to ‘Lions’ this year has brought

good news. Who said Michiru needs magic to win?

Michiru has achieved some great performance ranging

from house competitions to house charity. The spirit of

Michiru has changed for the better, from last year's none

participating spirit to a participating one. The lions were

more than pleased to welcome two members of staff this

year; Ms D. Laverington, form tutor for Year 13 and

charity organiser and Ms. J. Long a form tutor for Year 8.

The form tutors (Mrs. Hau, Ms. Wells, Ms. Long, Mr.

Grace, Ms. Hartigan, Mr. Troughton and Ms. Laverington)

have done commendable job in encouraging tutees to

take part in house competitions and this has led to an

increase in the number of

participants in all

competitions this year.

Michiru lions started their

journey in first term on a

low note after coming third

in the swimming gala.

Despite the third position in

swimming gala, Michiru showcased some fantastic skills

and performance during the gala where the senior boys

freestyle relay record was broken by Michiru. Some of

the lions that achieved excellent results were Biko, Caleb,

Kyla Coehlo, Bo, Zaithwa, Jared, Molly, Talea, Maya and

Julie. Second term of the year has been a turning point

for Michiru; in almost all the competitions, the lions were

either taking first or second position. The house

continued to excel in this term to claim second position.

WOW! Some of the outstanding competitions in which

Michiru came first were; Yr 8 and 9 girls basketball, Yr 7

mixed basketball, Yr 7 mixed netball, Yr 7 mixed

badminton, Yr 7 mixed hockey, Yr 7 mixed touch rugby,

Yr 7 mixed dodgeball, Snr boys football, Snr boys

basketball, Snr public speaking, house drama and spelling

bee. From the result it is clear that the Year 7 have

brought a powerful striking force towards the house

special mention goes to Chioma, Bo, Clement, Mustafa,

Zaithwa, Steffie, Lauryn, Kyla, Laila, Louisa for being part

of the winning teams.

The lovely blue house increased its participation among

Year 8 and 9 boys and girls. I am proud that they

understand the importance of taking part in

competitions. ‘Winning is not everything’; I am sure they

have had fun in all the competitions this year. Some of

the intermediates deserve to be mentioned and these

are Chawezi, Chinedu, Ray, Lonjezo, Caleb, Gerrasmos,

Cyprian, Pao, Bertha, Julie, Talea, Shalom, Talita, Lusayo,

Sally, Sheilla, Maxford, Corino, and Nathan. Well done

folks.

Our seniors have always been at the front to shows the

juniors how to get better results and they have been

committed towards house competitions throughout the

year. This was evident as they senior lions claimed a

number of first positions this year. It is unfortunate

because a lot of them are leaving this year after 7 years

of stay at Saints. I would like to wish them all the best as

they go out to the world and Michiru will always cherish

their contributions they rendered towards the house.

Well done. Daisy, Michael, Joshua, Ian, Phillip,

Emmanuel, Petro, Hanna, Sarah, Jordan, Uci and Axel, we

will miss you and your services. The house is now

counting on Dumi, Mirande, Tiya, Biko, Sam, Yankho,

Ellie, Jared, Nikita, Mishka, McMillan, Keith, Tej, Khwima,

Kessiah and Sandra to continue with the good job already

started.

Ms. Wells and Ms. Hartgan will be leaving at the end of

this year. We wish them all the best in life, and thank you

for your contributions towards the lovely blue house.

Finally, I wish all the Lions a good holiday and rest

MICHIRU CHARITY (KACHERE REHABILITATION CENTRE)

Last year after donating two exercise machine and some

other assorted items to Kachere Rehabilitation Centre,

the management made a request to the house. The

request was that the centre was concerned with the look

of the centre walls which had been painted more than 20

years ago. The management asked Michiru if it could

afford to paint the institution which was not looking good

at that time. This was a starting point for charity prefects

who decided to find means and ways of raising funds to

buy paint for the cause.

MICHIRU HOUSE CHARITY REPORT

Michiru House Charity Club has had a very successful

start this year. We have carried out two events so far

this term. Which includes ‘The worlds Smiley Day’ and

‘Junior Movie Night’

The Club meets every Wednesday in the Applied Learning

Room from 2.30-3.30 and has large numbers of keen

students from years 7-13 all eager to raise as much

money for our chosen Charity ‘Malawi Against Physical

Disabilities’ (MAP). Our aim is to raise money so that we

can purchase paint in order to make the physical

environment at MAP more colourful and welcoming for

their patients.

So far we have produced and sold badges for The World

Smiley Day. The event took place on 10th

October 2014.

Michiru House Charity Club prepared over 400 smiley

badges ready for 13M to sell around school. 13M proved

to have excellent selling skills and all badges were sold by

break time and 100,000 MWK was made.

We also held a Junior Movie Night on 30th

October 2014.

Tickets sold quickly and the juniors had a fun night, many

dressed up in Halloween Costumes and there was a prize

awarded to the best dressed. This was won by Ujaa in

year 7. Many of the students from the Michiru House

Charity Club donated refreshments that we sold at the

evening. Again this event was very successful, everyone

had fun. We raised 108,000 MWK.

We would like to thank all students and staff who have

helped in the Michiru House Charity Club, as well as

students who have donated money through purchasing

badges and/or attending the events so far.

We are committed to raising as much money as possible

this year. Please look out for other Michiru Charity

Events this year. Zahra G, Michiru House Charity Prefect

In total the house has managed to raise K282, 000.00.

This money has been used to purchase paint and right

now Kachere Rehabilitation Centre is getting its new

look. The other part of the money will be used for the

payment of the painter who has generously charged K80,

000. 00. I would like to thank everyone who contributed

his/her finances towards the charity work. You have

managed to put a smile on the less privileged. Mrs D

Gausi, House Manager, Michiru
