Introduction

When Banglalink entered the Bangladesh telecom industry in February 2005, the scenario

changed overnight with mobile telephony becoming an extremely useful and affordable

communication tool for people across all segments.

Within one year of operation, banglalink became the fastest growing mobile operator of the

country with a growth rate of 25%. This milestone was achieved with innovative and attractive

products and services targeting the different market segments; aggressive improvement of

network quality and dedicated customer care; and effective communication that emotionally

connected customers with banglalink.

Banglalink is today the 2nd largest mobile operator in the country and have recently celebrated

with 1 corer customers. This has been achieved in just three and a half years. Banglalink is a

company of ORASCOM TELECOM a multinational.

ORASCOM TELECOM is one of the most dynamic telecommunications powerhouses in the

world. Orascom is based in Egypt and has operations in 7 countries worldwide. Established in

1998, it is today the largest capitalized company on the Cairo & Alexandria Stock Exchanges

with over 79 million subscribers worldwide. It has grown to be one of the largest and most

diversified GSM network operators in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

To maintain such a thriving organization Banglalink has a strong internal IT sector to support the

problems within the company. It is an internal network setup to support employees with their IT

related issues. This software is called Helpdesk trouble ticketing system. The system also

allows generating predefined reports and having feature to generate customized reports as well.

Networking and telecommunication devices used

Database used in the system

The system has been developed in the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 database. The term SQL

refers Structured Query Language. This database language can perform task according the

instruction what it receives from its users.

Hardware

Banglalink uses more than 100 p.c. and printers in their organization. They also uses intercom

for their internal communication. Strong intranet is present within the organization.

Network Device

1. Server & System: Banglalink uses the Windows Server Edition 2003-Service pack 2

for their networking system. Windows Server 2003 (also referred to as Win2K3) is a

server operating system produced by Microsoft. Introduced on 24 April 2003 as the

successor to Windows 2000 Server, it is considered by Microsoft to be the cornerstone of

its Windows Server System line of business server products. The special features about

this operating system are:

Internet Information Services (IIS) v6.0 - A

significantly improved version of IIS.

Increased default security over previous versions,

due to the built-in firewall and having mostservices disabled by default.

Significant improvements to Message Queuing.

Manage Your Server - a role management

administrative tool that allows an administrator to

choose what functionality the server should provide.

Improvements to Active Directory, such as the ability to deactivate classes from

the scheme, or to run multiple instances of the directory server (ADAM)

Improvements to Group Policy handling and administration

Provides a backup system to restore lost files

Improved disk management, including the ability to back up from shadows of

files, allowing the backup of open files.

Improved scripting and command line tools, which are part of Microsoft's

initiative to bring a complete command shell to the next version of Windows.

Productivity and utilization by different level of users

Banglalink GSM Ltd. provides mobile telephony services in Bangladesh. It offers prepaid and

post-paid mobile connection services. The company also provides various value-added services,

such as call forwarding/divert, call waiting/call holding, call barring, caller line identification

presentation, voice mail, short messaging, ring tone and logo downloads, conference call, picture

messages, and instant recharge. Banglalink entered the market with a promise of making mobile

phone affordable for people. This promise was kept and Banglalink was the first operator to

introduce a flat rate for all calls (inside own network and to other operators) for the convenience

and ease of customers. Thus "Desh" was launched - the best prepaid package for making calls to

any network. In addition, a new prepaid package, Banglalink Desh "Rong" has also been

launched. This package offers attractive tariff plan for customers who need to talk within the

Banglalink network. "Rong" is a Bengali word that means "Color" - the objective is to give

customers a brand that they can refer to as colorful and lively. Banglalink Desh is already a very

popular and well-liked brand - Banglalink Desh Rong is a brand extension to enrich the brand.

Targeting the corporate and SME segments, Banglalink has launched "Banglalink Enterprise"

with state of the art services including GPRS, corporate SMS broadcast, dedicated customer

relationship management, and customized packages. Banglalink enterprise offers customized

telecom solutions for different businesses as per their requirements and the objective of

Banglalink enterprise is to assist the clients at every step as their businesses grow.

Banglalink also offers extensive range of value added services for customers. Recently,

interactive voice portal has been launched for customers who are not SMS savvy. Banglalink

'Amar Tunes' (CRBT) service is extremely popular with customers with a rich library of English,

Hindi, Bengali and Arabic songs - all ready to be set as caller ring back tones. Banglalink has

also been the first operator to launch Missed Call Alerts for customers. In addition services like

Song dedication; logo and ring tone download; and i'bubble (voice message) make the portfolio

rich. Banglalink has also launched GPRS in most major cities and will extend to major districts

by end of 2007.

Limitations

There are many other factors that the current system is facing. Some of them are problems andsome of them are as usual maintenance function and they are discussed below:

Operation: In point of fact operation problem is the most general problem for every

system. The system Banglalink uses also has some operation problem like, sometime the

users finds login process slow, server get unavailable, etc. But these are all minor

problems as a result they do not hamper the service of this system very much.Although

there was sufficient level of involvement by the user of the software when it was

developed; there some problems relating to the software.

o Needs training: If a new employee is introduced to the system then s/he requires

sufficient amount of training to understand the operation of the system.

o No external connectivity: As this system is for internal usage of the

organization, it loses connectivity as it is out of its infrastructure.

Maintenance: The common problems of application maintenance are user knowledge,

product quality, programmer time availability, machine requirements, and system

reliability.Since it is not a software company, the Company has an annual maintenance

contract with the software company who developed the program. The company has to

bear a fixed annual expense for the softwares maintenance.

Backup: The responsible person/team always gets active backup process of the system

and takes back up of the system on a daily basis to avoid any kind incident related to data

loss. The softwares records are stored on magnetic tapes which are kept in the head

office which is situated in Gulshan-1. However, there are some problems associated with

the Backup process of the system which may occur sometime and not at all possible toavoid.

A file may be in use during backup, forcing the backup process to skip that file

The backup media could be faulty.

The backup software could be malfunctioning.

The tape drivers could be corrupted.

Security: The Companys network security system includes softwares security. Even

after that, the user interfaces and IT executives user interfaces password is changed

every three months. And administrations interface password is changed every six months.

The server is kept in a secure room in the head quarters, and only registered personnels

can enter the room, so it can assumed the server is well secured.

Mobility (Scalability): In telecommunication and software engineering, scalability is a

desirable property of a system, a network, or a process, which indicates its ability to

either handle the growing amounts of work in a graceful manner, or to be readily

enlarged. A significant number of systems fail in initial use, or even during integration,

because factors that have a negligible effect when systems are lightly used have a harmful

effect as the level of use increases. This scalability problem (i.e., the inability of a system

to accommodate an increased workload) is not new. However, the increasing size (more

lines of code, greater number of users, widened scope of demands, and the like) of U.S.

Department of Defense systems makes the problem more critical today than in the past.

In terms of the Banglalink system they dont face any significant problem of

scalability. Because the no of users are accessing the system concurrently not

exceeding the sever limits.

Recommendation

The software, Help desk trouble ticketing system, has made a huge contribution on the

performance level of the company. It has increased the efficiency and reduced the duration of

every task. Though the system is performing very well till now but we would like to provide

some recommendations for the system in order to longer its performance

First of all, the company should establish external connectivity to accommodate more

facilities within the system. IT executives can offer their service in a broader way if

external connectivity is established.

The process might get little slower because then the external connectivity so the

company can go for a higher internet connectivity or increase the server limit of users

which might resolve the problem.

The backup are kept in magnetic tapes. The company should find another way of saving

the backup which will reduce the probability of losing the information. In addition, we

prefer one single person should be responsible for the backup process rather than any

other person or team.

Lastly, the company should hire personnel who will be completely responsible for the

maintenance of this system within the department so, that they can understand the

problems related the software and to sustain regular service by overcoming the problem.

Conclusion:

Industrialization is considered to be the beginning of new era in the history of mankind; like that

information system is certainly another factor which will start a new dawn for human civilization

in upcoming years. That organization is more successful which uses its information more

efficiently than others. In this case, Banglalink is managing its internal information more

efficiently than before as a result, they are able to have control over their resources and they can

certainly use them more effectively. They developed the system help desk trouble ticketing

system, to manage their internal work, at the same time, they are getting good amount of help

from this system which leads them to run their work scheduled effectively.
