    Reel Breakdown

    All sequences done by me in 3ds max 2009 and rendered with the 'mental ray gi' preset unless

    otherwise stated.

    00:00 Vancouver Heat Beat: (Aug 2009) Robot Transition customized for reel;

    Claw hand rigged via basic parent linking and animated using the rotation axis.

    Texture using various metallic surfaces taken by digital camera.

    Lit using 1 spot light and 2 omni lights. Glows created by occlusion omitting helpers.

    00:04 Gophers in Space: (May 2009) Student graduation film;

    All characters rigged up to be able to perform both ik/if actions as well as to be able to have

    squash and stretch.

    Simple and basic face rigg with added controls for nose, cheeks and ears for follow through

    movement and such.

    Lighting used the basic combination of 3 point lighting, ambient occlusion and final gather;

    volumetric light was also used to dramatize many scenes. Glows added with occlusion omitting

    helpers.

    Textures of the characters as well as their costumes were all hand painted in Adobe Photoshop;

    the textures of environment and props were mostly maps taken by digital camera.

    Post production effects such as colour correction and blur done in After Effects and Premiere.

    00:05 Vancouver Heat Beat: (Aug 2009) Water Cycle Transition pt 1;

    Produced falling hearts in 3ds Max composited over an umbrella vector made in illustrator. Put

    together in After effects.

    00:06 Vancouver Heat Beat: (Aug 2009) Space ship Transition;

    City Modeled to scale of actual Downtown Vancouver.

    Volumetric light used for ship search light, standard 3 point lighting with a stronger back light togive deeper shadows and a bit of a noirlook. Occlusion glow helpers for the hull of ship.

    Volumetric fog effect used for clouds.

    00:08 Gophers in Space: (May 2009) Student graduation film;

    Volumetric light used heavily to dramatize scene. Main challenge here for me was keeping

    things tidy when dealing with the small crowd consisting of 7 characters on screen at once.

    Shots in this scene were deliberately kept very dark and tight on the 2 main characters so as to

    not have to deal too much with the secondary characters.

    00:12 Vancouver Heat Beat: (Aug 2009) Water Cycle Transition pt 2;

    Rain of hearts falls on vector drawn mountains with a half-tone effect. Subsequently, painted

    lines of colour start to flow down the mountain. Done with a combination of Photoshop,

    Illustrator and After Effects.

    00:15 Gophers in Space: (May 2009) Student graduation film;

    00:19 Snot Pot: (Dec 2008) Particle test;

    Experiment using the particle generator object ' P spray'; used in scene to create the spraying

    fountain of slime as well as the slime clingy to the pot. 'Metaparticles' was chosen to be emitted

    and its respective modifiers tweaked to make them clumpy and slimy. Pot texture with a

    occlusion omitting texture to create the diffused glowing effect. Animated using 'stretch' and

    'bend' modifiers.

    00:21 Vancouver Heat Beat: (Aug 2009) Water Cycle Transition pt 2;

    00:24 Gophers in Space: (Dec 2008) GIS pre-production;

    Main character calisthenics test for any errors in the rigg as well as to observe squash and

    stretch response and follow thorough motion.

    00:26 Gophers in Space: (May 2009) Student graduation film;

    00:30 Vancouver Heat Beat: (Aug 2009) Water Cycle Transition pt 3;

    Flowing colours meet to form a stream which goes over a waterfall. Stream made in 3D max

    consisting of 3 modified chamfer cubes and animated on fixed splines and UV textured to have a

    half-tone area at the front.

    00:32 Gophers in Space: (Dec 2008) GIS pre-production and final result;

    Main character's basic run cycle with props in each hand. And in the following is the final

    rendered scene. The space background is a single texture on a concave surface and made to

    glow. Lighting was set up to give the illusion that the room was lit more from the lights from

    space rather than the interior. Reflection in the glass was added for the reflection itself and

    to give a warm diffuse to the light shining through from out side

    00:30 Vancouver Heat Beat: (Aug 2009) Water Cycle Transition pt 4;

    3D lines fall causing splashes generated by 2 'P Spray' particle generators with gravity modifiers

    and wind in place. A partial 3D hand was made and rigged just to pose its fingers and thumb. All

    textures UV made to have a half-tone area. Lighting was 3 point and muted to look a little 'flat'.

    00:37 Vancouver Heat Beat: (Aug 2009) Water Cycle Transition pt 5;

    Made mountains and clouds to add depth to the little world created in the cup. Man in the boat

    was fully rigged although without ik and squash and stretch capabilities. Water splashes created

    with 2 'P spray' generators. 'Stretch' and 'bend' modifiers were applied to a cylinder to simulate

    a turbulent sea. Birds in heart motifs and flapping wings were not rigged but parented and

    individually animated. 1 spot light outside of the cup and 1 omni inside was used as fills; The

    main source of light was from a volumetric light placed right at the back.

    00:40 Gophers in Space: (Jan 2009) GIS pre-production;

    Another room made to be lit from the background. 2 omni lights were placed in the back ground

    and one spot light was used in the foreground on the character for fill. This scene although

    interesting was cut from the final because it did not strengthen the story in any significant way.

    00:42 Vancouver Heat Beat: (Aug 2009) Heart Operation customized for reel;

    Heart modeled and stylized based on medical human heart diagrams. Added various knobs and

    wires plus a TV screen in the middle. Lit with 1 spot light and a skylight for fill. Animated using

    'stretch' and 'bend' modifiers. Operation footage courtesy of Jason Riley.

    00:48 Gophers in Space: (May 2009) Student graduation film;

    00:55 Vancouver Heat Beat: (Aug 2009) Water Cycle Transition pt 6;

    Cube which transforms into a heart consists of multiple cubes and splines each animated

    individually. Cube explosion was done with 'P Spray' again and set to emit the same textured

    cubes.

    00:57 Vancouver Heat Beat: (Aug 2009) Water Cycle Transition pt 7;

    3d lines continue to follow splines shaped to form a stylized heart while the camera orbits

    around it.

    01:00 Gophers in Space: (May 2009) Student graduation film;

    Used a secondary gopher character but replaced space suit with a hat and a hoodie to make

    a boyish looking character. Modeled various arcade machines which were duplicated and placedto create a video arcade setting. Lit with 3 point lighting with the focus on the boy and Gopher

    arcade machine.
