Catherine Ritch A North Carolinian composer, comedienne, inspirational speaker, and author of 26 books, Catherine Ritch gleans much of her wit and wisdom from 45+ years of working alongside her favorite co-workers, church secretaries. Face it: if it comes through the church, chances are it will land in your office — most of it as “unwanted baggage.” Whether that baggage be people or “stuff,” Catherine will help you not only discover new and exciting ways to deal with it, but recognize those mundane and disastrous responsibilities as sweet blessings that will enable you to reach the peak of your profession.

Sylvia McClintick We cannot get rid of the chaos. It’s there in every person who drops by (unannounced), every email requesting information, and every phone call (when you’re busy). We can’t get rid of the chaos, but we can learn to harness it and put it to work for us. Now that we have a halter on the beast, we need to learn to lead it where we want to go. Sylvia has been taming the chaos for over 20 years.

Biltmore Estate® Friday Outing (included in registration) On Friday, April 4, PAUMCS conference attendees will be transported by bus to the Biltmore Estate. We’ll begin with lunch at Deerpark Restaurant, which overlooks quiet pastures and woods. From there we will enjoy a self-guided visit of George Vanderbilt’s 1895 home and learn about the families who lived and worked there. Boasting four acres of floor space, the 250-room mansion features 33 family and guest bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces, three kitchens, and an indoor swimming pool. The 8,000-acre estate remains the largest private residence in America. Bring your comfortable shoes for our outing. You are welcome to take photos of the exterior and grounds, but no photography, videotaping, or cell phone use is permitted inside the House.

The B.E.A.R. Closet 2014 Mission Project The Baby Equipment and Resources (B.E.A.R.) Closet is a ministry grounded in faith in Christ to loan baby equipment and provide resources to those in the Candler, North Carolina, community who are in need. Housed in Snow Hill United Methodist Church, the B.E.A.R. Closet serves families who are struggling

and in need of baby items and equipment. Most of the items to be loaned have been donated with the exception of car/booster seats. When the child outgrows the need for the equipment, the items are returned to the B.E.A.R. Closet to be loaned to another family. You can support the B.E.A.R. Closet ministry with donations of baby bottles, diapers, diaper bags, sippy cups, clothing (infant to size 6), and other baby items. Your donations will be collected at the 2014 conference.

PAUMCS MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Professional Association of United Methodist Church Secretaries is to provide a supportive base for the unity and fellowship of its members in order to provide individual growth, professional development, continuing education, and spiritual enrichment. A BRIEF HISTORY The Professional Association of United Methodist Church Secretaries was organized on April 14, 1982, in Dallas, Texas. Since the beginning, meetings have been held annually, a quarterly newsletter published, by-laws and logo adopted, working committees appointed, chapters organized, and Certification Institute established. Legislation was adopted at the 1988 General Conference stating the General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA) has the authority and responsibility: “To provide guidance and consultation for continuing education of church secretaries, including establishment of training and certification programs, and to provide assistance to the Professional Association of United Methodist Church Secretaries” (United Methodist Book of Discipline, 2012, ¶ 807.19). CERTIFICATION The Institute for Professional United Methodist Church Secretaries is held annually at the GCFA building in Nashville, Tennessee. All United Methodist church secretaries, administrative assistants, general agency, Episcopal, district, and annual conference office personnel may attend. Only national PAUMCS members whose annual dues are paid are eligible for certification after successfully completing the course of study. Each class is limited to thirty participants. Please visit www.paumcs.org for more information about PAUMCS.
