New Product Security/Tamper Evident Packaging (Section 3.9 of NSF/ANSI 60)
• Bags and super sacks employ seals that are destroyed upon opening, or that make resealing unlikely .
• Drums and small containers used for product shall be constructed and properly sealed to make opening or substitution obvious to the purchaser.
• Bulk shipments employ:– Tamper evident seals– Chain of custody– Alternative method providing equivalent protection
Update on Tamper-Evident Packaging (TEP) Requirements
• DOT regulatory requirements for bleach shipping containers require a vented bung (for Cl2 vapors).
• Some bleach manufacturers have indicated difficulty in complying w/ both DOT and TEP requirements.
• One potential option would be to classify chemical totes as “bulk vessels” rather than “containers” (thus allowing chain-of-custody TEP compliance).
• NSF proposing Task Group to review these issues.
Examples of liquid chemical container types (tote/drums), and a vented bung
