A Message From The Principal

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR STUDENTS WHO HAVE HAD PERFECT ATTENDANCE THIS TERM AND TO THOSE WHO HAVE

REACHED THEIR TERM ONE GOALS OF MEETING PROVINCIAL STANDARDS IN ACHIEVEMENT.

No formal interviews have been scheduled at this time, but you are welcome to contact your child's teacher if you’d like to

discuss the report card and grades that were assigned.

As term two begins, it is important that parents have a discussion with their child around their goals for achievement for the

rest of this school year. It could be a reading level target, a mastery of a math skill, a change in behavior, or a get more in-

volved in events. Then a plan on how to reach that goal is essential to make it a reality. Then monitoring the goal on an on-

going basis is important to ensure its’ success. Please let me know if you’d like help in establishing a goal with your child, we’ll

be happy to assist.

We have several new supports in place to assist students with reading and writing. After school programs are available for

students on Mondays and Wednesdays for our students wanting time on Dreambox and RAZ kids. As well French support will

be available to our French immersion students beginning mid February as an after school program.

We are planning a fun night on FEBRUARY 24th. From 5-8pm. School Council has partnered with us to provide snacks and

prizes. Our focus will be on FAMILIES HAVING FUN WITH LEARNING. All families are invited to participate and we will have

activities planned for all grade levels. Look for a note coming home soon.

PINK SHIRT DAY IS ON FEBRUARY 23RD = T SHIRTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE IF INTERESTED. We will have some fun

activities planned for students during this day too.

BREAKFAST CLUB HELP NEEDED ON WEDNESDAYS = IF YOU ARE AVAILABLE TO HELP PREPARE BREAKFAST ON WEDNES-

DAY MORNINGS FROM 8:00-9:00AM—WE’D LOVE YOUR HELP. PLEASE LET MRS. LUNDY KNOW.

PLEASE NOTE: THE PROVINCE HAS ADDED AN ADDITIONAL PD DAY—ON APRIL 15TH.

Milk Princess Elizabeth is still offering white & chocolate milk. Purchase a milk card for $10 which is good for

10 items of your choice. White and chocolate milk will be available during the lunch break (second nutri-

tion break).

Money will not be accepted at the milk station. Students must pay with their milk card.

Milk cards will always be available at the office. Send the money to school with your child and the teach-

er will send it to the office for a new milk card. The student’s name will be put on the milk card. Once

the milk card is finished (all 10 squares are punched) the student can bring the card to the office and

claim a small prize from items provided by the milk marketing board. Teachers, EA’s and ECE’s will pro-

vide assistance to the Kindergarten and Primary students with handling of their milk cards.

Thank you for supporting our Milk Program.

IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION!!!!

As part of the ETFO Collective Agreement, school boards are required to make transitional mid-year

changes to their 2015-16 school year calendars to address the additional PD Day, and to also notify

parents of this calendar revision. The additional elementary PD Day is Friday, April 15, 2016. Should

OSSTF reach an agreement prior to April 15th, the secondary PD Day will be harmonized with the ele-

mentary PD Day.

Mindful parenting, mindful kids

Mindfulness involves being fully present and accepting of our moment-to-moment experiences, without becoming lost in

thought about the past or future. Life as a parent is busy and as a result it’s easy to operate on auto pilot. Being a mindful par-

ent means taking the time to enjoy the everyday moments with your children. As parents, mindfulness is especially important

because it allows you to role model mindfulness practice, allowing your entire family to reap the benefits.

Some examples of daily mindfulness activities you can do with your children include:

Going for a walk and giving everyone the task of finding 5 things that they hear, see or feel/touch during the walk and re-

porting back to the family upon return

Spending time unplugged and together as a family. Take turns sharing stories about your day and listen to each with kind

attention.

Practicing daily mindfulness activities prepares you to respond thoughtfully to situations rather than react to them. For exam-

ple, if your child is showing signs of anger, rather than reacting with discipline, take the time to think about why they are upset.

Connecting in this way, with compassion can help defuse the situation.

Dan Siegel, best-selling author of several parenting books, co-director of the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center and

executive director of the Mindsight Institute, offers a wonderful description of what it means to be a mindful parent in

this short video clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXxrJEnIboM

Being a more attentive, mindful parent can help you feel more confident and content within your family!

Dressing for the Cold Weather

As the cold weather is now upon us, please ensure that your children dress properly for the weather. Stu-

dents are expected to go outside twice each day unless it is extremely wet or very cold. Hats, mittens,

proper footwear and warm coats are essential in cold weather. PLEASE LABEL clothing.

INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURES

There may be times during the school year where inclement weather or other situations could cause trans-

portation cancellations or school closures.

At times when student transportation has been cancelled and schools remain open, the

decision of whether or not to have children in school on that day rests with the parent

or guardian.

Should you decide not to send your child to school in the event that transportation is cancelled but

schools remain open, or if your child is ill or late, please ensure that you call your child’s school to in-

form them of your child’s absence.

A key resource in any emergency is the DSBN Emergency Information form that you filled out at the begin-

ning of the school year. Please let the school know of any changes in contact information or procedures you

wish to be followed throughout the school year.

Information about transportation cancellations and school closures will be available as soon as it is

available through the following channels:

Anti-Bullying Prevention and Intervention

As part of our Anti-Bullying Prevention and Intervention initiatives at Princess Elizabeth, our students

have created New Year’s resolutions focused on building positive relationships through kind words

and actions with their fellow school mates. It is our hope that our students will use these goals to

promote a positive school climate.

Parent Tip of the Month

Praise (and Practice!) Inclusive and Respectful Behaviour

Parents set the tone for family relationships and children learn relationship skills by watching their

parents’ behaviour. Practice tolerance and model the use of positive power by respecting and sup-

porting others. Encourage positive relationships among children by praising respectful and inclusive

behaviour whenever you see it. Try and focus on the positives of your child, even when they need

correcting.
