PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear students, families and friends, Last week was full of yummy treats: pancakes on Monday, Kids in the Kitchen
Tuesday, Charlie and Chocolate Factory Wednesday and lunch orders on Friday
for spaghetti with meatballs, cheese and Peats special organic tomato sauce.
Yummo! Our Year 6s are doing a great job in the canteen and learning valuable
financial literacy and hospitality skills.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The highlight on our calendar this term was our whole-school excursion to see
Roald Dahl’s delightful Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical at the Capitol
Theatre last Wednesday. Seven mums, one dad, an uncle and baby Scarlet.
joined us on the train from Ourimbah Station and it was a feast for the eyes and
ears with dancing Oompa Loompas, Veruca Salt’s terrible tantrums, Violet
Beauregard exploding, Augustus Gloop’s humungus burp then getting sucked up
the chocolate waterfall, tiny Mike Teavee (no-one can work out how they did it)
and the amazing Willy Wonka. The show certainly ended with a bang with
shooting silver streamers and confetti - a fantastic experience that I hope fires
up everyone’s imagination.
I’m always
entertained by the
different accounts
and appraisals the
following day:
Hudson- I liked
Charlie the best
because he can
make lots of
chocolates now.
Brax- Coming back
on the train was
the best, laughing
all the way with
Hastings, Call and Hudson and our squirrels.
Calloway- I liked the show and on the train ‘cause I like playing ‘Hangman’ and
‘Noughts and Crosses’.
Hastings- My favourite bit was right at the end when Charlie came out dressed
like Willy Wonka ‘cause it looked really cool and he wasn’t poor any more.
Bronte- I loved the funny Oompa Loompa dance at the end and the streamers.

Responsibility - Care for all creatures
Lydia- I liked watching all the people win the Golden Tickets and enter the chocolate factory to see how all the
chocolates are made.
Ali- I don’t know how they made Mike TV so small or how the pulled Veruca Salt apart. How do they do that?!
Jasper- I loved playing games on the train with my friends and when Willy Wonka found the Oompa Loompas in
the jungle.
Noah- It was funny when Augustus Gloop didn’t listen to Willy Wonka’s instructions and he got sucked up into
the chocolate waterfall.
Kade- I liked it when Mike Teavee became really small and when Charlie went into Willy Wonka’s book and wrote
about his own imagination.
Rachel- I liked it when they first entered the factory with the beautiful lolly garden and chocolate waterfall.
Shakia- My favourite part was when Veruca Salt was naughty and got pulled apart by the squirrels.
AJ- I loved the chorus and singing ‘Candy Man’ and all the costumes, especially Willy Wonka’s.
Ollie- I loved it just before intermission when the door to the chocolate factory went BANG! And scared everyone.
Isabella- I liked the second half, when the characters had an obstacle course and they kept bumping into things.
Zoe- Veruca Salt’s tantrums made me laugh when she kept shouting ‘I want..I want..’ and screamed so loud.
Elijah- I liked going on the train and telling funny jokes with my friends.
Briony- My favourite bit was when Mike Teavee came out of the TV really Tiny and his mum did a happy dance.
Savannah- I liked it when Augustus Gloop did a massive burp into the mike and the big bangs.
Hayley- My favourite part was when the Oompa Loompas first came out during ‘Imagination’. The puppets were
so clever!
Makayla- I loved it when Violet Beauregard blew up into a blueberry and exploded.
Brisbane Water Zone Swimming Carnival
Our two top swimmers went on to compete at the Brisbane Water Zone
Swimming Carnival last Friday at the Peninsula Leisure Centre at Woy Woy.
Abbey represented Peats in the 50m Freestyle and Briony in the 50m
Backstroke. We’re so proud of them and thanks again to
Mr Randall for organising such a successful day!
National Day of Action Against Bullying
Along with 5618 other schools, I made sure Peats is registered as a NDA school to stand
united against bullying and violence with school communities across the nation.
The theme for the 2019 NDA this Friday is- Bullying. No Way! Take action every day.
The NDA gives schools the chance to take action and empower young people to be part of the solution when
addressing bullying in their school community. It provides an opportunity to focus on bullying and the big
changes we can make to create safer communities for everyone. We have access to a range of new and thought-
provoking classroom resources and materials to make the day a great success. The solution to bullying is not
likely found in a specific ‘anti-bullying’ program, however, but through a committed, consistent, multifaceted
and whole-school approach, which we take very seriously at Peats.
The Bullying. No Way! website for Australian schools is managed by the Safe and Supportive School
Communities Working Group which has representatives from all states, territories and sectors.
Their website is very informative and please see me if you ever have any queries or concerns: https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/NationalDay
‘Tell Them From Me’ Student Survey
This term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a
Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The
survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student
outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and
effective teaching practices.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au
The survey is a great opportunity for our Year 4, 5 and 6 students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback
on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers
interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me
to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our
school.
I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less
than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 18th~29th March.
Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.
A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with Year 4, 5 and 6 students
today. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by 18th March.
Harmony Day
Next Thursday, everyone is invited to wear a national costume or orange mufti as part of our
annual Harmony Day celebrations. Australia is the most successful multicultural country on earth
and we have many different cultural backgrounds and languages represented by just our small
school. Each year the Harmony Day Poster and Song Writing Competitions attract many entries
and bring out the creativity and passion of school students motivated by a desire for a peaceful
and inclusive society. Prizes range from $150~500 and the closing date for entries is Friday, 12th
April. If you are interested, please search:
www.movingforwardtogether.org.au
To complement the research P2 is undertaking on Papua New Guinea for the CWA’s ‘Country Of Study’
PowerPoint competition, I’ve invited some local women from PNG to be our guest speakers (yet to be
confirmed).
If you have any artefacts from PNG at home, we’d love you to bring them in to share with the class.
Hall Kitchen Grant Application
CWA President Kaye Pointer and I are preparing the paperwork for the new ‘My Community Project’ grant. For
the first time, individuals will be able to put forward their ideas for community projects and vote for the best
ideas in their area. The projects that get the most votes will receive funding to deliver their project in their
community. In 2019, $24.4 million is available to support projects across NSW. Finally completing the hall
kitchen as per the original plans definitely fits the criteria and directly benefits the mountain community. Read
the finer details here:
https://www.nsw.gov.au/improving-nsw/projects-and-initiatives/my-
community-project/
Application period - 2 April to 15 May 2019
Reviewal process - 15 May to 15 July 2019
Public vote - 15 July to 15 August 2019
Successful projects announced - September 2019
Next P&C and Upcoming Events
Our next P&C meeting will be held on Tuesday 19th March, at 3:15pm in P2’s classroom. Items on the agenda
include the State Election lamington stall, new school front entry and Easter raffle. Everyone is welcome and
we hope to see you there!
Easter is just around the corner and we’ll hold our annual Hat Parade, hunt and raffle draw on the last day of
term, Friday, 12th April. So…time to start thinking about your hat design. Last year’s masterpieces were certainly
hard to beat!
