  • Meet Future Teacher Ambar Castaneda

Ambar Castaneda, a 10-year resident of the city of Santa Ana, is a 2013 NHBWA scholarship recipient and a recent Santa Ana College graduate with a GPA of 3.43. When talking about the future, Ambar says, "My aspirations are to one day be a teacher with my own classroom and teach my students the importance of education.” She has been accepted to California State University, Fullerton and will attend in the fall 2013 to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Child and Adolescent Studies. Ambar believes that teaching is all about giving to others. Her involvement in the community was recognized with the Presidential Award in May 2013 for volunteering over 100 hours of community service. As part of her extracurricular activities, Ambar volunteers at Roosevelt Elementary School as a 5th grade teacher’s aide tutoring students in math and science. In her spare time, Ambar enjoys baking, reading, running and playing basketball with her sisters.

“The NHBWA has helped me accomplish my dream to continue my studies and be an example to follow for my younger siblings,” Amber said. She added, “It has helped me to keep believing in myself and to keep doing what I have been doing.”

Meet One of NHBWA’s Newest Board Members Karla Hernandez

Karla Hernandez began her professional career working as a subrogation adjuster with Farmers Insurance in 2002. She has worked at both Farmers Insurance and State Farm Insurance as a property adjuster. Currently, she is the office manager at the Eddie Quillares State Farm Agency. Mrs. Hernandez enjoys working at the Agency because she gets to utilize her professional knowledge by educating and coach her clients regarding Insurance and the claim’s process. Mrs. Hernandez earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from University of California, Riverside (UCR). While attending UCR she was part of the AmeriCorp’s Program where she worked with the community of Riverside. She had the opportunity to assist students in need of tutoring through the bilingual program in math and science. Also, she interned at the Office of Mayor Ronald O. Loveridge, handling all of his Spanish speaking constituents’ correspondence. Karla is married, has three four-legged babies, and resides in Irvine CA. Mrs. Hernandez strongly believes that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to: the sky really is your limit. As mentioned above, Karla works at the Eddie Quillares State Farm Agency, located in Santa Ana and she can be reached by email at [email protected] or by phone 714 617-7150.
