The Z’s have won seven of their nine meetings with Omaha this year, including a four-game sweep at Zephyr Field from April 24-27, and has won nine of the last 12 games vs. Omaha dating back to last year. A win today would clinch NOLA’s second straight non-losing season against Omaha. YESTERDAY’S NEWS – Kyle Jensen hit a solo home run as part of a three-run second inning and followed Mark Canha’s solo shot with another in a three-run third inning, as the Zephyrs pounded Omaha 14-4. The Z’s led 9-3 after four innings, having already hit four of their season-high six home runs, including a two-run blast by Danny Black in the second. The Storm Chasers scored three times in the third with a two-run homer by Christian Colon against Andrew Heaney, who lasted 2.2 innings and was charged with three runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. The third run scored on a wild pitch by Rett Varner, and Colon added their final run with a solo homer off of Varner in the fifth. Varner got the win with 3.1 innings, allowing no hits other than the home run to Colon with two walks and a strikeout. Bryan Evans picked up his first save of the season by pitching 3.0 scoreless innings with three hits allowed, a walk and five strikeouts. Jordany Valdespin hit a three-run homer in the seventh to put the Z’s ahead 13-4, and he finished with a team-high two doubles and four RBI. Zack Cox was 3x3 with a double and solo homer in the eighth. ON THE HILL – Brad Penny gets the call for his second start with the Zephyrs after he debuted Sunday against Memphis with 5.0 shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk with six strikeouts in a 6-2 Zephyrs win. He took a no-decision, as Xavier Scruggs hit a game-tying, two-run homer in the seventh against Adam Conley before the Z’s pulled ahead for good. The Kansas City Royals released Penny during spring training, and he signed a minor league contract on 6/18 with the Marlins, making two starts at A Jupiter before joining New Orleans on 7/13. KYLE’S KORNER – Kyle Jensen’s second home run last night was the 30th of his Zephyrs career, which placed him in a four-way tie for eighth on the franchise’s career home run list, 29 behind all-time leader Chris Aguila. Jensen’s 18 homers this season lead the team and are tied with fiver others for second in the PCL, eight behind Fresno’s Adam Duvall, and his 64 RBI are fourth-most in the league. Jensen has driven in 10 runs in his last 12 games, with at least one hit in 11 of those, good for a .319 batting average (15x47), and he now has four multi-homer games on the year. GOING DEEP – The Z’s six home runs yesterday were the most they had hit in a single game since they hit seven on July 7, 2012 against Oklahoma City. They have already eclipsed their 2013 total of 105 by blasting 111 in their first 98 games to put them on pace for 163, which would shatter the club’s single-season record of 153 set in 2012. ON THE MARK – Mark Canha charted his team-best 31st multi-hit game yesterday by going 2x5 with a home run. He has hit safely in 21 of his last 23 games, going 35x87 (.402), the second-best average in the PCL in that span, with nine doubles that are tied for the third-most in the PCL in that time. Canha has more hits (65) than any player in the PCL in his last 42 games dating back to May 29. The hot stretch has raised his season average to .321, which is tied for sixth-best in the league and is his best mark since he was hitting .325 on June 17, 2011 with Class A Greensboro. WHAT A RELIEF – The Zephyrs bullpen has not allowed more than one run in nine of the last 11 games, compiling a 1.30 ERA (7 ER / 48.1 IP) with 39 strikeouts against 12 walks. Z’s relievers have also received the winning decision in four of the last five team victories, while the starters have failed to pitch past 5.0 innings in five of the last seven contests for an 8.23 ERA (25 ER / 27.1 IP). SHAKE ‘N JAKE – Jake Marisnick, the reigning PCL Player of the Week, went 2x6 with a double yesterday to bump his average to .395 (15x38) during his eight-game hitting streak that dates back to July 7 when he returned to the Zephyrs after a three-day stint with the Marlins. He also has two home runs, three doubles, six RBI, five runs scored and a stolen base during the streak. He leads the team with four triples and 19 stolen bases. JORDANY’S WORLD – Jordany Valdespin has multiple hits in five of his last eight games for a .364 batting average (12x33) in that span with five home runs, two doubles, a triple, 11 RBI, 10 runs scored and seven walks for a .475 on- base percentage. 2014 SEASON LAST START – Penny held Memphis scoreless on three hits with a walk and six strikeouts on 7/13 against Memphis in his first start above the Class-A level since 2011 when he was with the Detroit Tigers. He retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced and left the game with a 1-0 lead after Kyle Skipworth hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. He received a no-decision when Memphis tied the game 2-2 in the seventh, but the Z’s responded with two runs in their next two at-bats to win 6-2. BACK FOR MORE – The Marlins signed Penny to a minor-league contract on 6/18. After 13 years in the Major Leagues, Penny did not pitch in the 2013 season. He took the year off after appearing in 22 games as a reliever with the San Francisco Giants in 2012. He appeared in two spring training games this year with the Kansas City Royals before being released on 3/7. PLANET JUPITER – Penny began his second tenure in the Marlins system with two starts at A Jupiter, going 0-2 with a 5.06 ERA (6 ER / 10.2 IP), no walks and four strikeouts. He lasted 4.2 innings on 7/2 with four runs on seven hits against Palm Beach and went 6.0 innings against Charlotte on 7/8, with two runs on three hits. GOOD THROUGH TWO – The only runs Penny has allowed have come in the third and fifth innings. Palm Beach scored three times in the third and once in the fifth on 7/2, and Charlotte scored twice in the fifth in his next start on 7/8. Opponents are 3x19 (.158) against Penny in the first two frames and 10x36 (.278) afterward. RISP-Y BUSINESS – Opponents were 4x10 (.400) against Penny with runners in scoring position in his two starts with Jupiter, but he limited them to a .160 mark (4x25) with the bases loaded and gave up three hits in 11 at-bats to leadoff hitters.

CAREER IN REVIEW ONCE A MARLIN … – Penny made his Major League debut with the Marlins in 2000 after four years in the minors. He went 48-42 with a 4.04 ERA in five seasons with the Marlins and was a member of the 2003 World Series championship team before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2004. HEADED WEST – In five seasons with the Dodgers, Penny posted a 46-33 record and 4.07 ERA while making the National League All-Star team in 2006 and 2007 when he went a combined 32-13 with a 3.65 ERA and a third-place finish in the Cy Young Award vote in 2007. ON THE MOVE – Penny pitched for the Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants in 2009 before spending 2010 with the St. Louis Cardinals, 2011 with the Detroit Tigers and 2012 back with the Giants as a reliever after appearing in one game with the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks in the Japan Pacific League, making one start and allowing four runs in 3.1 innings. VETERAN EXPERIENCE – Penny has compiled a 119-100 record in the big leagues with a 4.26 ERA and has averaged 12 wins a season since he debuted with Florida in 2000. The Arizona Diamondbacks selected him in the fifth round of the 1996 draft and traded him to the Marlins on July 8, 1999.
