2011Sales List offering something for the novice and seasoned collector alike. Included this year are

notable historics, like „Picador‟; a strong selection of show flowers and award-winners, like „Conestoga‟;

and a large selection of quite exceptional, hard-to-find mid-century hybrids for garden and show, like

„Sunmaid‟. In keeping with tradition, the selection is diverse.

New introductions „Amber Waves‟, „Dangerous Dentures‟, „Eyeful‟, and „Lost in Flora‟, from Dave

Niswonger; and a former release from Gary Knehans, „Cowboy Up‟, are also included in the list.

PHS is delighted to offer these very special, Missouri-bred hybrids to you.

New Offerings for 2011

Amber Waves (Niswonger, 2010) 2W-YYP {37-93 [Gold Convention x 3-87 (Baronscourt x Inca

Gold)] x 33-93 (Gold Convention x Inca Gold)} Midseason. The corona is not yellow or pink, but of

cream, amber, orange sherbet, honey, and bronze tones, with underlying pink and peach throughout the

various metamorphoses; the petals, too, take on the same appealing tones, changing throughout the life

of the flower but always a shade lighter than the corona; cooler weather intensifies the palette, and in all

weather the flowers are luminous. The plant is exceptionally strong, quickly providing an abundance of

well-formed flowers borne on stiff stems. Images on Daffseek are representative of its form, but limit

its range of colors. Possessing terrific show and breeding potential, it is in a league of its own in the

garden. Very popular with visitors to the field for its “coat of many colors” appearance, „Amber Waves‟

comes highly recommended! Formerly seedling 9-00. $35.00 each.

Cowboy Up (Knehans, 2006) 11aY-Y (Falstaff x Flyer) Midseason. Its superbly formed, thick-

textured, all-yellow show flowers are carried on stiff stems above the proportionate, blue-green foliage,

perfectly poised for your viewing enjoyment. Petals open vivid yellow; corona opens yellow-orange,

turning yellow with maturity. A strong grower equally suited for show and garden, with obvious breeding

potential, this is one of the finest all-yellow split coronas available. Named for a slang rodeo term. Few,

for $27.00 each.

Dangerous Dentures (Niswonger, 2010) 2W-Y [(Inverpolly x Early to Rise) x Circle of Pink]

Midseason. Daffodils don‟t have teeth in the sense that, say, shark do, but this flower comes mighty

close… Taking mimicry to a new extreme, the cream-colored corona is abundantly adorned with

dangerous-looking, denture-like appendages that, despite their obvious potential to pierce and shred,

leave their supportive, flat and well-formed milk-white petals entirely intact, rendering it potentially

showable… (Enter a flower of this into a show and watch the judges run away screaming, arms flailing,

like a scene from the 1975 classic, Jaws. ) „Dangerous Dentures‟ is an exceptional grower in the field,

and has garnered considerable attention due to its novel character and habit. It was so well received at

the 2011 American Daffodil Society‟s national convention in Jackson, MS that a single bulb fetched

$100 at auction! Formerly seedling 4-08. Only five to go this year, at $40.00 each.

Eyeful (Niswonger, 2005) 2W-Y (Milk and Apricots x 5-92) Midseason. Broadly ovate, pure

white petals gently reflex away from a bowl-shaped, rounded corona that opens strongly old-gold,

darker on the rim and maturing to a light gold with a rimmed appearance; in some seasons, the flower will

be distinctly and broadly rimmed, with the same rim color also penetrating the throat. „Eyeful‟ is an

exceptionally strong grower, producing lush clumps of stiff, tall and upright stems carrying cheery

blossoms above the foliage for ultimate garden value; the flowers are equally suited in the show. Sure

to please! Formerly seedling 6-98. Only five to go this year, at $40.00 each.

Lost in Flora (Niswonger, 2010) 2W-WPP (Milk and Apricots x Circle of Pink) Midseason. A

strong grower for the garden with potential for show, „Lost in Flora‟ boasts overlapped, well-formed

white petals and a large, spreading and generously ruffled corona in deep coral-pink with a lighter,

nearly white center. Exceptional health and vigor; weather-proof stamina; large and showy, consistent

flowers; and much public appeal has warranted introduction. Named to commemorate Dave Niswonger

and friend Charles Pickens getting lost in Flora, IL during their first visit to see Dave‟s flowers in the

PHS field; also, a play on words as the two gentlemen became lost in the veritable sea of daffodils

when they finally reached their destination. Formerly seedling 36-04. Abundant stock permits a lower

introductory price of $30.00 each.
