    WELCOME

It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to be together inside The Playhouse. So, first of all, thank you for joining us for today’s show, either Weekend Comedy or I and You, our fall productions. We appreciate the opportunity to give you two chances to experience theatre.

Secondly, as a community theatre, it is so very important to have the community gather together once again. Admittedly, we are gathered in

much smaller groups and are keeping six feet from each other. But we are in the same room, hearing each other laugh, and sharing a tear or two. This is how we become better individuals, by working together.

As we were developing plans and exploring the question should The Playhouse open, we recognized that many would not be willing to take a risk. We don’t want anyone who feels unsafe or nervous about attending public events to come to the theatre. It is our hope that they will wait until circumstances meet their needs and their comfort level so they can enjoy the time together.

However, we also know that there are others who desire to do something outside of their homes right now. As a community theatre, we need to serve this group as well. We are aware that we can’t keep anyone 100% safe as there are risks involved in every aspect of life, but we are going to do our best to mitigate those risks that we can control.

In addition to those aspects you experience when you entered the building – masks for everyone, safely distanced seating, limited gathering spaces, early seating inside the theatre – we have also upgraded our filters to a HEPA level as high as our HVAC system will allow. We have also had a deep clean of the entire building which included a complete fogging of the building and a steam cleaning of our carpets and chairs before allowing visitors inside. Additionally, we have changed our exchange and refund policy as we don’t want someone to come into the building who is not feeling well because they will “lose their money.” All sales are exchangeable or refundable at a patron’s request.

We make these adjustments in our hope to once again gather as a community, share an experience, and find our world just a little brighter than before. We aspire to continue to serve as an oasis where together we can escape even for just an hour or so some of the stresses that we all face daily. This is the power of theatre and this is what The Playhouse has done for 102 years.

We most gratefully thank you for playing your part!

    David R. KilpatrickExecutive Director

    Welcome to your Playhouse!

  • 12 THE PLAYHOUSE 2020–21 SEASON 13THE PLAYHOUSE 2020–21 SEASON

Weekend Comedy and I and You were not what I anticipated opening our 2020-21 season when we were finalizing plans for this year. We look ahead one, two, even five years to plan for coming seasons, but the global pandemic has changed how we do a lot of things, show selection included.

Weekend Comedy has been an excellent play to produce not just because of its logistical conveniences – small cast, unit set – but because it gives us a break from the outside world and will keep you laughing from beginning to end. The playwright, Sam Bobrick, has written and co-written over 40 plays that are still performed throughout the world. He co-wrote Weekend Comedy with his first wife, Jeanne Bobrick, and I can’t help but wonder how much of their own experiences informed the relationships between the characters you are about to meet. Sam Bobrick also had a successful career as a TV writer on shows including The Andy Griffith Show, Get Smart, and Bewitched and was the creator of the hit show Saved By the Bell.

In addition to running Weekend Comedy this fall, we are also producing the play I and You by Lauren Gunderson. The two plays will run in repertory, or “in rep,” meaning they will both be performed on alternating weeks. Historically many theatre companies hired small groups of actors who prepared as many as 10 or 12 plays at one time and were ready to perform them on any given night. While our repertoire consists of only two plays this fall, running our shows in rep has been a creative way to solve some of the challenges presented by the pandemic.

I and You premiered in a series of performances produced by the Marin Theatre Company (California), Olney Theatre (Maryland), and Phoenix Theatre (Indiana) in 2013. Given that Gunderson is one of the most produced playwrights in the country right now, it is not surprising that I and You has been performed many times by many theatres since. This story takes place between two teenagers trying to finish a school project on Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself,” and while it is a modern tale, its themes of unity, beauty, and oneness will touch audience members of any age.

Let’s heave a collective sigh of disappointment that we aren't going to have the season we had planned for this year. Breathe in. Breathe out. It will return again in the future, but it’s gone for now. Let that disappointment fall away to make room for the excitement that comes from finding creative solutions to pandemic-sized challenges. The year 2020 has helped us re-imagine what theatre can be and reminded us of why gathering together to share stories is important. We are lucky enough to still do that at The Playhouse this season and hope that you enjoy, whether in-person or at home, stories full of laughter, heart, and inspiration. Weekend Comedy and I and You have allowed us to rehearse with small casts, share a stage, and bring you a new and meaningful theatre experience.

Thank you for being here and enjoy the shows!
