Hello Everyone,

Here it is October already and time to enjoy the beautiful fall colours. We are so fortunate to live in such a moderate climate as I can’t imagine what it would be like to be shoveling snow and warming up the car as our southern Alberta neighbours have been doing.

Thanks to Grace Bell, Recreation Coordinator, we have a full slate of interesting programs available to seniors in the coming months. Although it is election day, I hope we have a good turnout on OCT. 21 for our NEW MEMBERS WELCOME.

The Board met on our regularly scheduled meeting date but had little business to discuss. I am happy to report that we are financially robust – not everyone knows that the Board will help finance new and existing activities. Should activity leaders feel they are in need of funds, please feel free to request funding. See details below.

Park, Recreation & Culture will be offering a movie afternoon – see page 11 in this newsletter for details.

At this time, I wish to remind members that Nanaimo Harbour City Seniors has three main functions and the Board welcomes volunteers to help fulfill these activities. These functions are: 1. Advocacy - the Board is the membership’s voice on recreational issues that

are important to you. We ensure that your views and wishes are genuinely presented and considered when 60+ program decisions are made. If you are interested in leading a new program or introducing a new activity, you can approach the Board to advocate on your behalf.

2. Program Funding and Support - The Society offers $2,500.00 annually for program activities. Application forms are available from the bulletin board next to the coffee machine in Bowen Complex lobby.

3. Event Coordination – this involves the social aspect of the 60+ programs and improving member interactions is one of the Board’s main goals. We work closely with Parks, Recreation & Culture in improving the essence of our community, connecting people face-to-face for fun, learning, inspiration and sharing. We welcome your ideas and involvement.

I do hope each of you will give some thought to participating in Board activities. Fresh ideas and faces are always welcome. You can make suggestions, participate in activities or volunteer as a Board member. Don’t forget, we have a suggestion box in the lobby at Bowen Complex.

This year, in addition to honoring the ‘exemplary volunteer of the year’, the Board along with Parks, Recreation & Culture will recognize volunteers who have contributed 5+ years to our programs for seniors. These awards will be awarded in the spring at the luncheon which is sponsored by Parks, Recreation & Culture. Nomination forms for EXEMPLARY VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR are on the bulletin board in the Bowen Complex lobby.

I look forward to a busy fall and winter.

Regards, Dolores Gottenberg

Charlene DelucaCharlene practiced law in Alberta before she and her husband retired to Nanaimo 5 years ago. In addition to teaching fitness classes, Charlene has many other interests - singing in a large choir, cooking and entertaining, yeast baking, travel and enjoying beautiful walks on Vancouver Island.

Charlene teaches both Balance & Mobility and Chair Fitness at Bowen Complex. She enjoys the fun and energy of teaching group fitness classes. Her classes focus on functional strength training and movement to enhance the ability to perform day-to-day activities.

Balance & Mobility incorporates the use of weights and resistance tubing in addition to some floor work to provide a full body workout and build strength and flexibility. Progressive exercises specifically aimed at developing and improving balance are an important component of Balance & Mobility.

Chair Fitness is a great beginner level class for anyone who is new to fitness, or for people who have difficulty standing for very long or for those who just can’t manage floor work. Chair Fitness includes a warm-up, light cardio work and strength training using weights and simple fitness equipment to increase muscle strength, with an emphasis on learning proper technique. Participants are often surprised that many of the exercises typically done in other fitness classes are easily adapted to Chair Fitness. Join us any time! A new class begins on Tuesday, November 5.
