COMPASS Newsletter of the Anglican Parish of Ellesmere December /January 2015 December Services The Vicar Writes By the time you receive this issue of the Compass, Christmas will be less than two weeks away. In our churches we have been counting down the weeks by lighting candles on an Advent wreath. Advent wreaths were first created in Europe. They have 4 candles around the outside, one candle for each of the four Sunday's before Christmas. Three candles are purple and the other is pink. The Advent wreath is a circle without beginning or end. It reminds us that God is eternal and God's love and mercy are endless. The green leaves on the wreath tell us that God never changes. The candles represent the blessings that Jesus brings the world. The first purple candle is the candle of hope. It is sometimes also called the prophets' candle. It represents the hope of the people of Israel that God would act and send someone to save them. The second candle is the candle of peace. It is sometimes called the Bethlehem candle. It represents the peace that God gives people through his Son, Jesus Christ. The third candle is pink or rose. It is the candle of joy, sometimes called the shepherds' candle. It reminds us of the joy of the shepherds as they heard the good news of Jesus' birth. The fourth candle is purple and is the candle of love, sometimes called the angels’ candle. It represents God's love for the world and for all people. In the centre is a white candle. It is the Christ candle and it is lit on Christmas Day. It represent Jesus who comes to bring light into our lives and into the darkness of a hurting and broken world. Hope, peace, joy and love are gifts that the world badly needs. They are gifts that God gives us to share and they’re gifts which grow as they are shared. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus let’s remember those who, for various reasons, are struggling and reach out in whatever ways we are able so that all may enjoy the blessings of Christmas and know that God has indeed come to us and that salvation is at hand. The Christian World Service Appeal is one way of extending this further afield should you choose. Envelopes may be posted or handed in at one of the services. May God bless you all with hope, peace, joy and love, at this special time and in the new year ahead. By the time you receive this issue of the Compass, Christmas will be less than two weeks away. In our churches we have been counting down the weeks by lighting candles on an Advent wreath. Advent wreaths were first created in Europe. They have 4 candles around the outside, one candle for each of the four Sunday's before Christmas. Three candles are purple and the other

is pink. The Advent wreath is a circle without beginning or end. It reminds us that God is eternal and God's love and mercy are endless. The green leaves on the wreath tell us that God never changes. The candles represent the blessings that Jesus brings the world. The first purple candle is the

From Vestry: Lois McKay

Vestry kept a time of silence at the beginning of its

November meeting to honour Lois McKay who died

recently after a short illness. Lois had been Parish

Treasurer for some 20 years, a role she carried out

with great skill, patience and dedication. Lois was a

much loved member of our church family, and was

greatly admired and respected by all who knew her

for her friendliness and enthusiasm. She always put

others first and gave 100% to everything she took

on. Lois will be greatly missed. Our sympathy and

love are extended to her husband, Mervyn, and

family.

Alastair Wood has kindly agreed to be our next

Treasurer.

Church Updates

Sedgemere The Church fair on Saturday and Stir up Service on

Sunday have been keeping everyone busy. The Fair

was a great success with a wonderful array of

bargains and magnificent afternoon tea. The fair

raised over $1500, a new record.

Our appreciation goes to Margaret Howson,

Rosaline Brown and all who helped.

On Stir-up Sunday parishioners young and old

helped mix-up a Christmas cake.

On Sunday 13th of December there will be a

Taumutu service at 10am. The Marae Christmas

party will be held afterwards.

Dunsandel Traditional Services and Cafe Church have been

going well. Pam Frampton’s funeral was held a few

weeks ago.

Brookside It has been business as usual in November. Nine

Lessons and Carols was held on the 6th December

and was well attended.

Irwell Leonie Knowler was thanked for her leadership of

Beat and Bounce at her final session in

November.

Work on finishing the roofing and guttering of St

Mary’s looks great. The paschal candle stand is

ready to be installed now that the bird problem has

been dealt with.

Southbridge Southbridge has had a busy year with the 150th

celebrations for both parish and church and the

committee has enjoyed a break in November. Good

numbers continue to attend services.

Leeston Mike’s plant sale was a great success. The plants,

sausage sizzle and Sue Dillon’s stall and raffle have

raised over $1800. The front fence has been

demolished. Thank you to Alastair and Sheelagh

Wood and their helpers. Jenny Hercus has painted

the ramps. Work has begun on cleaning up the gate

posts at the entrance to the

church grounds prior to

painting. Thank you to John

Horwood and Colin Walls for

their efforts.

Thank you to all

who’ve cleaned the

church this year.
