General Sessions

Tuesday

■ What the Dialysis Machine Doesn’t Tell you John Sweeny, BS Physics, CHT

As you might imagine, the machine is not as good at telling the caregiver what is actually going on as he/she may believe. This presentation covers the accuracy of machine parameters as they relate to patient treatment including TMP, pressure moni-toring, needle displacement and temperature. A caregiver with good patient assessment tools is a real asset even if the machine is working fi ne.

■ Future of Dialysis Larry Jones, CEO, Innovative Dialysis Services and Brooks Rogers, VP Technical Services, Fresenius Medical Care, NA

Leaders from key dialysis providers will discuss where they see dialysis going in the face of tech-nological advancements, government regula-tions and the aging population.

■ Benefi ts of Home Treatment for Patients and Centers Dori Schatell, MS, Executive Director, Medical Education Institute

What’s in it for patients to do dialysis at home – and, how can your clinic benefi t from having patients dialyze at home? Learn both in this informative session.

■ Improving the Health Care Team Michael Morales BS, CHT, CCHT, CCNT, CBNT, Dialysis Education Services; Cindy Miller RN, CPHQ, QI Coordinator, The Renal Network; Connie Schroeder MAOM, BSN, RN, IDS Education Administrator

■ Technician Empowerment: Getting Through your Midlife Crisis Nicole Martinez CHT, PCT/Home Program, Wade Miller CCHT, DaVita

There comes a time in every dialysis technicians career when you think, “Do I want to do this for-ever?!”. Our session is meant to help technicians re-assess, re-evaluate, and re-energize their

career path! Our hope is to start with the excite-ment of those new to the nephrology commu-nity, help those with their mid-life dialysis crisis, and pose some self-refl ecting questions to help all technicians determine where they are at and how they want to move forward! As always too, laughter is the best medicine and there will be plenty of humor throughout the presentation to keep it fun as well as educational! Don’t be late, and bring your sense of humor and a camera!

Thursday

■ Time to noTICE Infection Control Teri Spencer RN, TB Spencer Consulting LLC

The NOTICE Initiative – National Opportunity to Improve Infection Control in ESRD – was formed to develop and use resources that will reduce infections in dialysis facilities. The goal is to have direct care staff and auditors (facility administra-tive AND surveyors) all using the same “check-lists” for direct care. This session will focus on what is expected of direct care staff in particular.

■ Green Tech Room Rejean Quesnelle A.Sc.T., Renal Technologist, Halton Healthcare Services

In our continuing series of “Green Dialysis” tech-nicians will learn how to make their tech room and patient care areas more eco-friendly and save money while doing so.

■ your Role in Keeping Patients Safe Glenda Payne, MS, RN, CNN, Director of Clinical Services, Nephrology Clinical Solutions

Observations and skill of both the clinical and technical staff are critical in keeping dialysis patients safe. Learn basic and advanced meth-ods to ensure no patient is injured on your watch. You’ll be able to create a plan to imple-ment or improve a patient safety program in your facility.

Diffi cult patients can be a challenge. This ses-sion will help you properly assess and respond to various diffi cult situations that technicians encounter, how to plane and prepare an appro-priate response and how to defuse a situation for better communication with the patient.

■ Common Survey Mistakes you Don’T Have to Make Teri Spencer, RN, TB Spencer Consulting LLC

Preparing for a survey is hard work! But, there are mistakes that a lot of dialysis centers make that can easily be avoided. This is a must presen-tation for any technician whose center will be surveyed in the next three years.

■ Clinical Case Studies Wade Miller,CCHT; Teri Spencer, RN; Diana Shelkov,CHT; John Sweeny, BS

This interactive session provides an opportunity for each technician to discuss with their peers what they could/would do about a dialysis patient in diff erent circumstances.
