BUILDING AND GROUNDS UPDATE

The Building and Grounds committee, chaired by Tom Mercer, has been hard at work maintaining the church building. The Session approved a slight increase in the flat roof repair, as additional work was found on the roof. The cost will be nearly $69,000. Work on the roof should begin in the next couple of months. Also heating and air conditioners have had to be repaired and maintained which is a continuing cost. The Session has reviewed the Capital Repair and Replacement Reserves Fund that was set up a few years ago. This has been an ongoing fund that will be depleted by the flat roof repair. Members and friends are encouraged to give special donations to this fund. A water heater broke in the educational building and because of a clogged drain; water flooded the Shepherds’ Shelter (Room 10) Sunday school class room. The insurance company will be paying for most of the cost of this repair, but when the carpet was being dried some of the tile was disturbed. An environmental company discovered that the tile contained asbestos. This means that an abatement process will be taking place in this room. The Building and Grounds committee recently replaced light bulbs in the chancel area of the sanctuary and has done many miscellaneous repairs including replacing outside lighting fixtures, finalized a contract with a new lawn service, repaired a pew in the hallway of the educational building, and fixed the hallway drinking fountain. Special thanks to the members of the Building and Ground committee: Jim Dixon, Henry Mares, Bob

Urban, Kenneth Anderson, Lynette Mercer, & Tom Mercer; Chair.

LIBRARY NEWS

CHILDREN JOIN THE LIBRARY FOR

A SPECIAL 5th SUNDAY PROGRAM April 29th

Grades K – 5th 9:45– 10:45 a.m.

Come join us in the Library to hear the special story of Pentecost, the great festival that marks the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost means “fiftieth day” and is celebrated fifty days after Easter.

Scripture: Acts 2: 1-4 When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all gathered in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divid-ed tongues, as of fire, appeared among them and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability. This enabled our disciples to spread the gospel in many languages and the church was born.

LIBRARY NEWS In conjunction with St. Philip’s recent Lenten study, Unbinding Your Heart, the church Library has arranged a table with books on the subject of Prayer. If you would like to extend your study and are looking for a book to further explore prayer, please come and browse our table. The church Library is open Sundays and locked during the week. A key can be obtained from the church office during office hours. If you would like to borrow materials from the Library, please follow three simple steps: 1. Remove - the white card found at the back of the book. 2. Write - your WHOLE NAME and the MONTH-and-

YEAR on the white card. 3. File – the white card alphabetically into the blue box on the

prayer book table. We hope this will help enhance your study. Come check us out!

What a blessing it is to have such a wonderful church family. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the e-mails, cards, calls, food and especially all of the prayers that have been coming my way. My leg continues to heal and hopefully I will be back on the move soon. Please continue to keep me in your prayers. Much Love, Joy and Peace, Lesley McCoy

Note of the Week………………

Hallelujah! That is what Elizabeth, our interim associate pastor, says every Sunday after the “Assurance of Pardon”. And indeed, Christ has risen, hallelujah! What a glorious Easter Sunday we had with the Chancel Choir, hand bells, trumpets, trombones and timpani! Thank you to all who participated in the service and made our Sunday glorious and meaningful! And yesterday Greg taught us, that in history, the Sunday after Easter is filled with laughter because Christ cheated death and was raised from the dead! I love that concept and hope all of us will have “new beginnings” this Easter season. Let’s invite someone to St. Philip and share our laughter and joy of the good news of the gospel. Christ is risen, hallelujah! This Sunday, the third Sunday in Eastertide, the Handbell Choir will play “Sheep May Safely Graze” for the offertory. The Chancel Choir will sing “Children of the Heavenly Father” by Dan Forrest and accompanied by Lynn Garis, hand bells, and Melanie Demer, violin. Some of the lyrics are: Children of the heavenly Father safely in His bosom gather; nestling bird nor star in heaven such a refuge ever was given. God His own doth tend and nourish; in His holy courts they flourish; from all evil things He spares them; in His mighty arms He bears them. See you in church on Sunday!

Joyfully Singing in Christ, Pam Cochrane

Katie’s Comments

Have you ever noticed that there are some absurd laws in this country? I’m talking about laws that probably made sense when they were written, but now seem to have no connection with modern life. Did you know that honking one’s car horn at a sandwich shop after 9 pm is against the law in Little Rock, AR? Or that it is unlawful to walk backwards after sunset in Devon, Connecticut? In Wisconsin, butter substitutes are not allowed to be served in state prisons. In Nebraska, if a child burps during church, his parent may be arrested. Do you see what I mean about absurd laws? By law, owners of flamingos may not let their pet into barber shops in Juneau, Alaska. And in Indiana, baths may not be taken between the months of October and March.

I’m sure that there was a “valid” reason for these laws to be put on the books when they were written. But now, they seem silly and make most people giggle, most of these laws, that is. However there is one law in Vermont that makes a lot of sense. It is illegal to deny the existence of God.

Maybe all of these laws aren’t so bad after all.

Grace and Peace, Katie

College Care Packages

The church will be sending 35 finals care packages to our students this semester as a way of extending our thoughts and care to them during this stressful time. Our students attend colleges and universities all over the U.S. With the help of the parents of our college students, we will be assembling these packages on April 22nd in the Youth Hall during the Sunday School hour. If anyone would like to send a note to a specific student, please get it to me by 10:00 that morning in the Youth Hall, and we will make sure it gets into the proper box.

We are needing items to include in these boxes such as gum, pens, mechanical pencils, individually wrapped candies, cookies and crackers, fruit rollups, microwave popcorn, post-it notes, highlighters, sharpies, Easy Mac, goldfish, Kleenex-individual packs, cereal bars or anything you liked in college or your students like.

Last semester, the members of the congregation generously gave all of the items that we put in the boxes. After we stuffed the boxes full, we donated the leftover goodies for the children who stay in the Presbyterian Night Shelter. If you could help us again, please leave your items in the Church Office.

Thank you in advance for all of your help.

Anne Agee 817-282-6056 [email protected]

To the parents of college students - send us your student’s current address. Please contact the church office or me ASAP.

We want to make sure that we do not leave anyone out.
