Conformity involves the changing of one's attitudes, opinions, or behaviors to match the attitudes, opinions, or behaviors of other people. Conformity occurs because there is some social pressure to behave like other people, even in spite of our true feelings and desires. Take a look inside and meet New Mexico State University’s experts in social behavior: the Social Psychology faculty! SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY LABORATORIES: EMOTIONS AND SOCIAL DECISION MAKING LAB (Dr. Timothy Ketelaar) THE SOCIAL COGNITION LAB (Dr. David Trafimow). “Virtual” faces are sometimes presented to participants in Dr. Tim Ketelaar’s lab. Participants are placed in cubicles where they either play a computer game with a real partner or a virtual partner. Tammy Calvano, graduate research assistant, enters data in Dr. Ketelaar’s lab. Lisa Brown and Gaby Nordman, undergraduate research assistants, ready forms for participants in Dr. Trafimow’s Social Cognition Lab for an infidelity study.
