The official opening of boating season is finally here! It also looks like it is going to coincide with the end of our wintery weather. To kick off the season, P/C Mike Burke has arranged for Captain John Scoggin of the Puget Sound Pilots Association to be our guest speaker at our board meeting on May 8. Please consider joining us for his informative presentation about sharing the water with the many commercial vessels in our area. The HHYC Bacon Bash took place the weekend of April 20 at the Brownsville Yacht Club. Unfortunately, we were one boat down due to an apparent botched annual service. I'm guessing we'll have an opportunity to hear about this at a future "boating stories" session. The weekend's festivities started with a Chili and Soup dinner provided by Chef's Patty Cossack and Rick Lee. Paul Quinn provided our evening's signature drink...a keg of beer. After losing another boat due to an unfortunate illness, we got a relatively late start Saturday with a sandwich lunch. Later in the day, after a few
martini's and a brief demonstration of the defibrillator, the Bacon Bash commenced. There were bacon appetizers, bacon salads, bacon entrees, bacon side dishes, and even a bacon dessert! After we were all bacon'd out, we settled in to a game of LCR (Left Center Right) that involved a bit of money. It's amazing how competitive people get when there's cash on the table! There's an undocumented rule in Hidden Harbor that "guests" aren't eligible to win prizes. Our guests this weekend were Bob and Andrea McGuire. They brought their awesome dog Nick, who was more than happy to help pick Bacon Bash winners! As most of us know, you technically can’t win a HHYC prize if you’re not a member. I’m happy to say that Bob and Andrea joined the club on the spot and made way with the LCR winnings! The evening’s games concluded with a game of Knives. It would have been a game of Spoons, but we ran out. Fortunately, the knives were plastic, so the injuries were kept to a minimum. It probably goes without saying that Andrea won this game also! The night ended with an impressive bonfire provided by Dennis Kroeger. Chef Rick closed out the event with an excellent breakfast on Sunday morning. The weekend was so awesome that it was verifiably contagious. As proof, Henry Warner and Jill Lehman (who just happened to be in Brownsville the same weekend) have also joined HHYC! Adding new members during our events has become an exciting trend. The next event will be during Memorial Day weekend (May 25-28) and will be hosted by Dennis Kroeger and Brynn Sheridan. It looks like this event will be at the bargain basement price of around $20 per person and is likely to include one of our traditional dinghy cruises. Contact Dennis Kroeger (206) 245-7438 for slip assignments. Our June “Rock the Dock” event is the weekend of June 22-24. We
Commodore’s have already booked our two bands for the weekend and encourage all who plan to attend to contact Bell Harbor Marina to get your slip reservation. You can call them at 206.787.3952 and let them know you’re with HHYC. Also, monitor your email for information about Kitsap Wine Festival ticket sales. Discount tickets often go on sale in early May, so we will let you know as soon as we are notified. Be safe out there! Vic Portolese, Commodore
