OUR F IRST YEAR : IN REVIEW
New Manchester High School
CAREER TECHNICAL STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS (CTSO)
Starting a new school is an exciting time for teachers and
students. The CTAE teachers at NMHS have one overall goal: to produce high-achieving students who will become successful, productive citizens. CTAE courses are organized into career path-ways. Career Pathways have three or four specialized courses developed to provide students rigorous core ele-ments, performance stand-ards, and skills necessary for success after high school grad-
uation to go straight into the workforce, college/ universi-ty, or the military for addi-tional training. Students at NMHS have eight different
pathways which to choose from in the areas of Broadcast Video, Busi-
ness & Computer Science, Family & Consumer Science, Healthcare, Marketing, & Public Safety. As our enrollment increases, we hope to offer additional pathways to better serve the needs of our students.

WORK BASED LEARNING
Page 2
Work Based Learning provides
students with opportunities for
instruction in both academic
and occupational skills; guid-
ance in identifying employ-
ment and educational goals;
and career exploration. Stu-
dents have the opportunity to
connect what they learn in
school with work-site applica-
tion to enable a smooth transi-
tion into the workforce or high-
er education.
The Work Based Learning
program at NMHS has stu-
dents in many different path-
ways learning beyond the class-
room walls. Recently, stu-
dents participated in Mock
Interview Day. Students were
able to put their “real world”
skills to use as they participated
in the interview process. Stu-
dents came well prepared with
their resume, portfolio, and
professional dress. Many
guests from the community
came out to interview the stu-
dents which created the atmos-
phere of a real interview. Over-
whelming, the students enjoyed
this activity and were able to
use the comments left by the
interviewer to better prepare for
a real interview.
Marketing Principles is the foundational course for all pathways
in Marketing Education. Marketing Principles addresses all the
ways in which marketing satisfies consumer and business needs
and wants for products and services. The students have devel-
oped an understanding of the functions of marketing and how
these functional areas affect all businesses. They have
learned basic marketing concepts and the role of marketing in
our economy. Students have also developed skills to apply eco-
nomic concepts to marketing, distribution and logistics, market-
ing information management, finance in marketing,

We also reflect on issues that are
current in the business world today.
My students are expected to com-
plete tasks that related to real world
application. They are also encour-
aged to learn to be a leader and
work as an effective team member
when we break into groups. Pro-
jects allow students to see what is
expected of them when they enter
the career world. In Word we learn
to create industry appropriate docu-

ments such as letters, flyers, and newslet-
ters. While working in Excel the stu-
dents learn how to create spreadsheets
with formulas. Access allows the student
to create various databases. Publisher is
taught so students can create business
cards, calendars, brochures, and so
much more! We also teach Power Point
and the advantages of using a presenta-
tion when giving a speech or sales
demonstration. This class teaches many
life skills that our students need when
entering the work force! Computer Applications is a class that teaches the
functions required to operate the following soft-
students the opportunity
to learn about nutrition,
food preparation, kitchen
equipment, food and meat
safety, food marketing,
food choices, food labels,
food related diseases, nu-
trition through the
lifespan, and careers relat-
ed to Food and Nutrition.
Students in the introduc-
tory class have prepared
fruit pizza, homemade
salsa and chips, raspberry
oat bars, macaroni and
cheese, buffalo chicken
dip, shrimp fried rice,
homemade p izza ,
homemade biscuits,
strawberry shortcake,
and many more recipes.
Students have not only
learned how to prepare
food, and but also what
food to eat to keep their
bodies healthy!

V IDEO BROADCAST
PUBLIC SAFETY
Students in Mr. Thompson’s Public Safety class
learn the basics of fingerprint development. The techniques
and materials used are the same as used at real crimes
scenes and on popular CSI television shows. In this exer-
cise, fingerprints are found on a test medium. The students
then use fingerprint powder and special tape to lift the
prints. The students then evaluate the prints and determine
their suitability for submission to the AFIS system, had
they been collected at a real crime scene.

HEALTHCARE SCIENCE
Healthcare Science courses are for students wishing to
pursue a career in the Healthcare Industry. Students re-
ceive initial exposure to skills and attitudes applicable to
the healthcare industry. The concepts of health, wellness,
and preventative care are evaluated, as well as, ethical
and legal responsibilities of today’s healthcare provider.
Fundamental health care skills development is initiated
including medical terminology, microbiology, and basic
life support.
Recently students have been learning how to apply the
Anatomy that they learn in Applications to the Physiolo-
gy that is taught in General Medicine.
SCHOOL STORE: THE JAG SPOT
Students in Marketing and Work Based Learning help to run the
school store: The Jag Spot. The school store offers school sup-
plies, balloons, cappuccino, hot chocolate and frosty fruit drinks.
CTSO’s @ NMHS
New Manchester’s CTSO’s were very ac-
tive this year. Each organization attended
their Fall Motivational Rally, Leadership
Seminars, and our Regional Meetings. We
worked together to participate in a Toy
Drive before Christmas break. We collect-
ed toys for Toys for Tots. In February, we
celebrated CTAE Week!
We had teacher apprecia-
tion day, held a winter coat
drive, dress for success day,
and participated in a break-
fast social. We also attend-
ed a meeting at the Mayor’s
Office and Commissioner’s
Office for CTAE Month.
We are excited about mem-
bership growth and plan-
ning for our 2012-2013 year
to be filled with more events
and activities.
