The Association, originally set up in 2005, is seen as a means for the community to get together and meet their neighbours, other residents, air their views and hopefully, make this particular part of Surrey a nicer and better place to live. The area we cover is the triangle formed by the High St, Kingston Rd and the railway line, but we are considering the advantages to ourselves and to our residents of expanding this area in the future. We will be pleased to receive comments (and ideas) from residents in the rest of Beverley Ward – and those to the east of the High Street - on whether they would like to join our Association if we do expand our area. This Association was set up initially to formulate objections to a proposed local development. It was felt that a uniform and centralised platform to represent everyone was the best way to engage various public offices, including the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. We still hold that view! So – whilst we are concerned with new developments and tracking progress relating to the ongoing developments in our area (and our views have been sought by Consultants working on the Grafton Road site), we are also keen to encompass other

Saturday 13Th October 2012Methodist Church High Street New Malden

There will be an exhibition of local (Maldens and Coombe) paintings in the Methodist Church on Saturday 13th October from 10am until 4pm. The paintings were carried out by Frank Dobson, a local resident from Acacia Grove, from 1996 to the 2010s. It will be possible to purchase photographic reproductions of any of the paintings. There will be about forty on display. The exhibition will be held under the auspices of the “Friends of Kingston Museum & Heritage Service” as Frank has kindly donated the water colours to the Museum.

New Malden HistoryWhere were you in 62?by Robin GillI know I must be getting old when I start to write a history article about a period when I was alive. Although I don’t remember much about 1962 (50 years ago), I can tell you I was living in a corner house in a quiet cul-de-sac off Cromwell Avenue in New Malden.

Mounting pressure 1962 started with a “White New Year” and a flu outbreak that kept a 1/3 of Malden’s postmen off their deliveries. To help them with their rounds, there was a suggestion that Mount Road be renamed Cherry Tree Road to avoid confusion with other similarly named roads such as The Mount, and Mount Pleasant Road. But as the roads had been built at the turn of the century, the council felt there was no need to change the names sixty years later. Malden had been prepared for the snow over the New Year, but a sudden cold

snap in March caught motorists unaware, and the slope underneath the new railway bridge (built 1961) was the scene of mayhem when cars slid down one side, and couldn’t get up the other because of the ice. Undeterred that the same problems might occur at Worcester Park Station, the dismantling of the railway bridge there, which had spanned the Malden Road in some form since 1856, started in November, the whole process was due to be completed by June 1963 with the erection of a new bridge in the same spot. The council felt they had other issues to deal with in their newly refurbished chamber. There was an idea to send the portraits of the two VC winners (Bazalgette and Barton) to the library, but the members were reminded of the promise made after the war that the pictures would always be displayed in the council offices in proud memory of Malden’s brave pilots. That was of course if Malden and Coombe had a council, let alone offices. Announcements were coming out of Parliament about the reorganisation of government in Greater London. It was proposed that our local area would be amalgamated Kingston, Surbiton, Esher, Walton and Weybridge forming one large borough under London not Surrey. Malden and Coombe set up a committee to oppose this, but were disappointed when the local MP John Boyd-Carpenter voted in favour of the proposal in the Commons. As has been mentioned before (“The Only Way Is Up” VV March 2011) the Council with their Borough Engineer John Apse were very keen to modernise the local area. This meant demolishing some of the old buildings in Old Malden in particular Numbers 1 & 2 Church Road together with the Old Forge. These were 16th century cottages which the council regarded as slums, they were also keen to acquire the forge building as they didn’t want it to be used for “industrial purposes” which were unsuitable for the area. The land was later used for building the cul de sac The Glebe. There were also plans to demolish a substantial


property in Nelson Road which the council regarded as being “a playground for vagabonds and vandals” to be replaced by flats. But the biggest furore was caused by the application to demolish Coombe Woodhouse. This very old building had been moved piece by piece from Colchester to Coombe Hill Road in 1912 where it was reassembled. Mr Apse of the council claimed that the house was just a replica of a Tudor mansion, but thanks to spirited resistance led by Julie Roberts of Laburnum Grove the building was saved (see booklet Cedar Court: From Colchester to Kingston) printed 1988. The house was bought for £32,000, and was to become an English Language school.The building which was in the northern part of the borough, also became subject to the first local “smokeless zone”, enforced from the beginning of October. Any property in an area covering most of Coombe and Kingston Vale caught emitting smoke from their chimney, would be liable to a fine of £10. Elsewhere, the station area was deemed ripe for development as that part of Malden was “looking

tired”, and three Victorian houses which stood at the junction of Malden and Blagdon Roads were to be replaced by 11 storey offices. (now Spillers House and shops including the Co-operative store). The local Chamber of Commerce felt they were being kept in the dark about the Council’s plans for redevelopment as they had received no reply to their letter expressing concern about the proposals.

The gloves are offTo put this in perspective, the council found themselves divided equally on whether or not to order 40 pairs of white

gloves (costing £20) to wear on ceremonial occasions. The last time an official photograph had to be taken, the photographer had to ask councillors to hide their hands behind their hats as bare fingers should not be seen. One councillor suggested that they should only have one glove each to save money. In the end the casting vote of the Mayor was against the purchase.

Church Centenary New Malden Baptist Church who had been without a minister for four months since the departure of Rev


David M Thomas, announced that in April they would be welcoming Rev Douglas C Sparkes as their new pastor. The church is celebrating its 150th birthday this year (2012), and a booklet written by the Rev Sparkes in 1982 entitled “Thoughts On Writing Church Histories” could prove useful. Back in 1962 the church was celebrating its centenary, and invited radio star Sandy MacPherson to give an organ recital in the church. The original church built in 1891 which stood on the same site had been destroyed by bombing in 1940, and a new building erected. In 1962 there was a membership of 280. Other celebrations took the form of services, rallies, and socials. One of their oldest members Ellen Jackson died aged 101; she had lived in the same house in Sycamore Grove for 55 years, and was the oldest resident of Malden at the time. Disaster later struck the church, when an electrical fault at the beginning of July, caused a fire which almost completely destroyed the large hall next to the chapel, and an appeal was immediately set up to fund a replacement.

Shop around On the commercial front, the Chamber Of Commerce debated banning shopping trolleys on wheels from local stores as they had caused a number of accidents. Prams had recently been banned from Woolworths,

and dogs from Sainsburys, it was decided to leave the ultimate decision to the proprietors. Sainsburys (now Peacocks) in Malden Road broke ranks with other grocery stores by announcing it would be opening five days a week (closed Sunday and Monday), and would no longer close on Wednesday afternoons. Half day closing on Wednesday had been in place throughout most of the country since the Shops Act of 1911; nowadays we take seven days a week shopping for granted. One business definitely going was the house furnishers WH Bird situated at 9 Coombe Road and 62/70 Malden Road closed on 31st March. Mr Bird had died in 1940 and the firm had traded in New Malden for over 35 years. The site in the High Street is now occupied by Nat West Bank.

There was no shortage of interesting lectures you could attend among the various social groups. Frank Di Biase talked to the Library Circle about Hair Through The Ages. Di Biase was opened in New Malden in 1915 by the present owner Barry’s Grandparents, in the 1930s it passed to Barry’s father Merlino and his uncle Frank, and then later to Barry. Many members of the family have worked in the hairdressing industry with great success over the last century. Later in the year there was a talk by a nylon expert who astonished the ladies present, when she informed them there was 3 ½ miles of thread in each nylon stocking they wore. Another speaker was Louise Sutherland from New Zealand who cycled 25,000 miles around without a single puncture. Also members heard from Walter Thompson who was Churchill’s bodyguard for 18 years, and reportedly saved his life on about 20 occasions.

Change and things to come The year of change also said goodbye to the trolley bus, with route 604 being replaced by routemaster buses on the 131 route between Walton and Wimbledon, and the 605 route being replaced by the 285 bus between London Airport and Wimbledon. Trolley Buses which had replaced the trams only had a life of 30 years on British roads. Lastly, Malden’s schoolboys must have thought that

Christmas had come early when on 20th December thieves broke into the headmaster’s (Clifford Fisher) office at Beverley School, and broke his cane in half, before making off with property worth £10. Little did the locals know what was in store for them when, starting on 29th December 1962, there was 48 hours of continuous snowfall. The “big winter” of 1963 was just around the corner.

As you may have read last year’s Poppy Appeal went exceptionally well. This year however, the Poppy Organiser has been unwell, so we will not be able to carry out all the work that we did last year. We have ordered all the wreaths for the people and organisations who ordered them last year, who will need to collect them between times to be notified later. We shall of course still need our usual street collectors who will be contacted nearer the date. We would particulary like to find somebody to collect at New Malden station early in the morning, as this is a prime location with people going up to London to work. Is there anyone or a couple who would like to take on the task of arranging the Poppy Appeal for next year 2013, as the present organisers, will be unable to do so. Resident Partner, Richard Deadman is the longest serving estate agent in the High St joining the company in the early 1980’s and later moving into the area and married soon after. He became a Partner of the Independent firm a few years later and expanded to having 6 offices in the area with over 50 staff. Hawes & Co moved their New Malden office in August this year to new premises at 26 Coombe Road, on the corner of Acacia Grove.

Why did you decide to move your office to the new premises?With increasing success and growing staff in recent years we’ve outgrown the old office and the opportunity arose to expand and have larger offices on this terrific and very visual corner plot. We realised it would raise our profile in the Town and with the increasing importance of lettings in recent years would also enable us to accommodate a Lettings Department. Sales and Lettings go hand in hand and the two elements have traded off each other increasingly strongly in recent years.How will it effect people looking to move?From our vendors perspective we would be able to have a larger display for their property and a higher profile in these much more prominent offices, and from the home-hunters point of view the new office is easier to access and a more comfortable environment in which to discuss their requirements.What do you like and dislike about New Malden?Having been based here since 1980 I know so many people that it’s difficult to venture outside without being stopped for a chat – it’s nice to feel wanted. I

dislike state of the road in the High St – successive “improvements” to the surface have been poor. What are the biggest changes you’ve seen during over your years in New Malden? It’s certainly become much more interesting being more ethnically diverse in flavour.What are the most important things to you in your life?My devotees subscribe to the Bank Of Mum & Dad - my two daughters.Have you had any unusual experiences in the job?We sold a house to a very pleasant, recently bereaved widower a couple of years ago. He moved out a few days before completion and on the day the buyers moved in, we had a panic phone call from him asking if we could retrieve his wife’s ashes from a cupboard where they had been left. Fortunately we recovered them before the new owners moved in and wondered what they were. VVoice

Seasonal recipe Autumn PuddingTry this variation on summer pudding making the most of the early Autumn fruits, such as plums, blackberries and delicious English apples. Serve with softly whipped double cream flavoured with a splash of Calvados for a really indulgent dessert. • 175g caster sugar• 3 small English eating apples, peeled, cored and sliced• 4 red plums, halved, stones removed and sliced• 100g raspberries• 100g strawberries, hulled and sliced• 100g blackcurrants or blueberries• 100g blackberries• 10 slices thick-sliced white bread• Extra fruit, to decorate Place the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool.Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a round

cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the remaining slices of bread in half. Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin.Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit filling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup.Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To serve, carefully turn the pudding out onto a plate and decorate with extra sliced fruit. VVoice

Earlier this year I was writing about the mutter from the gutter concerning the possible linking up of the London Stock Exchange and the Singapore Stock Exchange, and now it seems mercurially as though something is about to

happen. More official details are to follow soon I understand but a cross trading of stocks may well be an excellent start. However, there is much more to be gained if this develops efficiently and successfully. From a more imaginative point of view, the blending of the historical strength of one with the youthful dynamism of the other should make for a perfect blend to the benefit of both. From a more

practical view such a move, I believe, is a very exciting development in the growth of both markets and their domestic economies. For example, the ability for the LSE to attract more far eastern investors has to help any market and especially in terms of liquidity and better price creation, particularly in smaller and often high tech companies. This can be good for both companies and investors and can only improve the standing of the LSE which, under its last management team, seemed bereft of any tangible strategic planning that I could identify. Singapore is not just a financial dynamo in South East Asia, but also a haven of professionalism and excellent regulatory standards, in a region not well known for such reputations. There is much that London should learn from their development. The result has been the growth of the business entrepôt which has attracted new business not just from the region but from around the globe. London should learn from this, remember its own roots and not try to lecture. VVoice

For more information about Alexander and his organisation see www.africanprisons.org. A recent newsletter shows training of a Primary School librarian in Luzira prison community complex, Kampala. A full time staff member has been appointed to run the school library that was refurbished and commenced at the beginning of February 2012. Another photograph shows the handing out of 42 Computer Training Certificates to successful graduate students who have been training at African Prisons Project headquarters in Luzira. The newsletter highlights key African Prisons Project workers and one such person is Emmanuel Oteng. Emmanuel Oteng writes ‘My advice to prospective donor/volunteers is to ask as many questions as you can. What African Prisons Project is and its activities do not lend themselves to preconception. I work at African Prisons Project but what I expected when I joined is markedly different from what I have seen since. The first impressions that anyone gets when the word ‘prison’ is mentioned are ones of ‘punishment, resentment, dissonance between Inmates, warders and interested civil society organisations’. However, once actually in the system you soon realise that there is a prevailing notion of ‘now we are here, let’s make the most of it’ from all parties involved. From Coombe Hill Alexander went to Kingston Grammar School and then on to Nottingham University. His organisation – African Prisons Project has worked with more than 20,000 prisoners in Uganda, Kenya and Sierra Leone and has been invited to work in a variety of other countries. Alexander was called to the bar of England and Wales in 2010. He has won numerous awards for his philanthropy. “We shall never forget you for your compassion for suffering humanity which is ever boundless. Kings Oak primary school Year 6 pupils and Abbeyfield House residents collaborated to create this amazing project with Busy Lizzy Crafts. The children supported the residents during their regular visits to the home as a linked activity. Residents thoroughly enjoyed working with the children and made good friendships along the way. “The tree of life” This amazing tree is a fusion of mosaic and ceramics. The creatures and wildlife were designed by the children which also features the resident squirrel. Some children worked with

residents to create leaves in clay while others shaped tiles to make bark .The birds and butterflies were designed and painted by the children. Busy Lizzy made a visit to the school to enable the year 6 children to continue its progress and finish the artwork before the summer holidays.This tree proudly won 1st prize in an exhibition recently and has now been installed by Busy Lizzy Crafts in Abbeyfield House for residents to enjoy. If like me, you spent the two weeks of the Olympics in August glued to the TV and

admiring not only all the efforts of the competitors but also all those wonderful volunteers, or ‘Game Makers’ as they were

called, perhaps you have been inspired to do some volunteering too? So read

on! Cards for Goods Causes (CFGC) is the largest multi-charity Christmas card organisation in the UK selling charity Christmas cards for more than 300 charities in around 300 locations from the Channel Islands to Pitlochry. Over the last 5 years charities have received £20 million from their card sales. The inspiration for Cards for Good Causes came in 1959 when a group of charities met to discuss the coordination of publicity for selling their cards at Christmas. Some of those founder charities still work with CFGC today. We keep our infrastructure simple and efficient, and strive to keep our operating costs as low as possible to maximise the amount of money each charity (or its trading subsidiary) receives from its card sales. Our band of volunteers, who return year after year, are key to this. So how about helping us in our local shop in Kingston? The shop is in All Saint’s Parish Church and will open this year on Saturday 20 October. We trade from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, Monday to Saturday. Cards are sold on behalf of over 40 charities, including local guest charities Princess Alice Hospice, Shooting Star Chase Children’s Hospice, the Royal Marsden Cancer Fund and the Royal Star & Garter Home. We also sell a range of Christmas Goods, including advent calendars and wrapping paper and gift tags. After the arrival of my first daughter, I wanted to find some regular things to do which we would both enjoy and wouldn't take us too far from home. The first one I tried was Baby Massage at the Malden Centre, a 5 week course on Monday mornings. I approached this with what seems now like a ridiculous amount of trepidation as I packed my enormous changing bag and wheeled the buggy uncertainly down the High Street. Would I be the only unkempt, slightly vomit-stained individual in a group of beautifully manicured yummy mummies? Well, to be honest I probably was the most dishevelled-looking person there, but the other mums were very friendly even though they all knew each other already - an ante-natal class had block-booked the course and I had managed to book the only other space. (Apparently this happens quite frequently so it's worth booking early.) The classes were deliberately scheduled at a generous two hours so that we could turn up half an hour late, or zone out for a nappy change, and still get lots of baby

massage time. Once I'd managed to get myself there, it was probably the most relaxing part of the week, with "gentle" being the word that springs to mind. We laid our babies down on a towel and learnt some simple techniques for massaging their feet, tummies and fingers; the babies seemed contented, the teacher was kind and welcoming, two hours passed peacefully, and I left feeling reinvigorated. A little later I also started taking my daughter to Rhyme Time at New Malden Library, which is on Fridays between 10.30 and 11. This is a lovely way to pass a half-hour; all the parents sit round in a circle with babies on their laps and the more mobile children in a kind of mini-mosh pit in the middle, while one of the librarians sings classic and newer nursery rhymes to us all, often with the aid of various puppets and books. Unlike a Malden Centre course, it's free to attend - but the downside of this is that you have to get there early in order to get one of the coveted twenty tickets, and then if you don't get in you just feel miserable and have to go and sulk in Costa Coffee or something. I found that for some reason Story Time at the library on Thursday mornings (10.30-11) wasn't so over-subscribed, perhaps because it's aimed at three years and over and many of these children will be at nursery. However it's actually quite a pleasant and relaxing activity for babies too, especially as the librarian who reads them tends to intersperse them with a few songs. As well as keeping us entertained, these are great opportunities to meet other parents so why not give them a try! VVoice

When I wrote my review of Tim Everson’s book New Malden Through Time in February this year, I mentioned how rare I thought history books which covered our area were. Well, just over six months later there is another one written by an equally proficient historian David Rymill.David, has written a monthly history article for our sister magazine “Worcester Park Life” since it first started in June 2008. He also produced an excellent book about Worcester Park & Cuddington A Walk Through The Centuries in 2000. As the name suggests

the format of the book was a walk, which started and ended at Worcester Park Station. Armed with this book packed with photographs and the memories of residents, the traveller was well equipped to take a stroll through the local history of the area. Now David has stretched his legs and entered “our patch” encompassing Old Malden in his journey. With photographs of the original Old Malden Library, and Plough Green shops, together with memories of happy local schooldays in the twenties, thirties, and forties. He tells how Manor Park came into being, and the little known POW camp in Malden. The reminiscences of the locals bring the whole story to life. The book is written in a very readable

way, and can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own armchair, it doesn’t have to be used purely as a walking guide. I know the book entailed a lot of hard work for David, and I am so impressed with the result of his efforts. Anybody with an interest in our rich and varied local history should consider getting a copy of this book. Enjoy Some Tulip Maniaby Pippa GreenwoodTulips are amazingly good value and have the potential to transform your flower beds and tubs next spring with their silken-petalled, strikingly coloured blooms.Late PlantingTulip bulbs are best planted from the last half of October and well in to November. Plant too early and the bulbs will be far more prone to damage by the fungal ‘tulip fire’ disease which wrecks the leaves and flowers.Gritty BedIf your garden soil is inclined to be clay and rather heavy, tulips may suffer and are certainly less likely to come back after their first wet winter. A heavy loam works well but anything that isn’t well drained may cause problems. You can solve this to a good extent by digging an extra large planting hole and putting an inch or two of horticultural gravel or grit in the base of the hole before planting the bulb. Don’t use grit or gravel left over from the local building site, as this often contains salts and other contaminants which may harm or kill garden plants.Contained ColourTulips make great plants for containers such as window boxes, tubs and decent-sized pots and planters. Shorter varieties generally look best (check the front of the pack or catalogue for heights). Good drainage is essential so make sure that there are plenty of crocks in the base of the container and that it’s well supplied with drainage holes. Try either a loam-free multi-purpose compost or mix 50:50 a loam-based compost and a bit of added grit.Fantastic FoliageMany tulips also have good looking foliage which can help to bring colour and texture to your pots and beds. Try the Kaufmanniana types such as ‘Johann Strauss’(dark red flowers with yellow edges and mottled leaves), or even better the Greigii type tulips which all have maroon patterning on the leaves, such as ‘Red Riding Hood’ (richest red with black). Tulip PartnersRichest red tulips surrounded by a mist of pale blue forget-me-nots are dreamily pretty. This wonderful combination is easy to achieve; you can sow the forget-me-not seed now, as you plant the bulbs, or if you prefer sow them early in the year, just before the bulbs emerge. The display you achieve will be breathtakingly beautiful.Long-lived LoveliesIn most gardens tulips are not the longest living bulbs, however you can always try growing the so-called species tulips such as Tulipa sprengeri or Tulipa turkestanica. They have smaller, less-showy flowers and will be considerably more expensive initially but they

look gorgeous, tend to last longer and, better still, also spread extensively in the right spot. After a few years a carpet of species tulips can be achieved, and will take your breath away.Good CompanionsTulips look great with each other. Try combining the richly purple-black leaved Pittosporum ‘Tom Thumb’ with any purple tulip such as ‘Passionale’, or for a wackier effect chose one of the frilly petalled parrot-tulips with green streaks on their petals, or the green ‘spring green’ tulip, combined with any low-growing shrub.Now is the best time of year to think tulips - start planting and transform your garden for spring.

Spotlight on....St Anthony’s Hospital It has long been accepted that catching a disease in its early stages is the best way to stop it from becoming a serious problem. Unfortunately the cost associated with mass screening programmes means that many health screens are not available on the NHS without first being recognised as a ‘high risk’ patient. However, by that time many patients may already have suffered some degree of damage associated with their condition. The lovely autumn weather made me recall a conversation had, ironically, whilst huddled under the awning of the tent one damp August bank holiday evening. The questions we were discussing were:

1. What is it acceptable for men to wear in a heat wave?2. How can it be that the weather which requires the least amount of clothing leaves the most room for sartorial horrors? 3. What is it about the heat that makes men abandon any sensibility we would normally exercise during the rest of the year? 4. Do we feel that sunshine gives us permission to take a holiday from taste?

Here, in no particular order, are our style no-no’s for gentlemen of a certain age:1. Socks and sandals Any other time of year, we seek to keep our feet bundled up in warm socks: argyle ones for work, a low-cut athletic pair for the gym and, on occasion, the heavy-duty wool variety in the cold months. Socks and sandals are a bad mix. Sandals are supposed to be worn with bare feet rather than socks. Stubborn men who ignore this battling on regardless, clad in brown leather sandals and white socks, look unattractive and get hot feet.2. Muscle vestsMuscle vests are designed to complement toned bodies but even if you are young and look like an Abercrombie & Fitch model then wear them under something or to the gym. For the rest of us they just highlight reveal wobbly white upper limbs and tummies which brings us on to ...3.Letting it all hang outWhen the sun is blazing, many men take off their upper clothing in an attempt to stay cool. While this may be tempting, being semi-naked on the High Street is not neither cool nor enjoyed by most observers. 4.Flip-flopsSunshines’s official footwear is undoubtedly the between-the-toe flip-flop: Ideal for a barbecue, a beachside stroll or if your job is to rescue people from swimming pools but the not in the Bentalls Centre. 5. Strong fragrancesYou might be hot and sweaty but masking it with litres of Kouros isn’t fooling any one .6. Anything containing Lycra (See VV May 2010)
