WHAT WE NEED

Tax-free days for back-to-school items run from the 1st through the 3rd

of August this year.

Why not donate the money you save to CRM? Also, please pick up some extra school supplies for

our students. Notebooks, folders, construction paper—whatever your kids need for school,

our students can use too! If you see a BOGO sale, save the free item for CRM. Or better yet, buy

an extra BOGO deal for us! Drop off your items downtown or at the McDuff campus.

Thanks in advance for your generosity!

The golf tournament is fast approaching, but there is still time to put together a team or purchase a sponsorship. We would like to thank the generous sponsors who have already signed on:

Remember that dinner-only tickets are available. Invite your spouse or a friend! Hole-in-One contest—win a car from Brumos or Mike Davidson Ford!Auction items—vacation packages, golf passes, Disney tickets, hotel stays, WJCT station tour and lunch with Melissa Ross, and more!

Darryl Ogden graduated from the LifeBuilders program in 2012, but he’s still a familiar face at CRM. As secretary of the Alumni Association, he visits the McDuff campus for meetings on the first Tuesday of every month and heads downtown to the New Life Inn to speak at chapel services on the second Tuesday. He also sings in the choir. “I try to be an example and show that by keeping yourself involved, you can beat it, you can succeed,” Ogden says. “I like coming back and giving back.” Ogden has little spare time during the week, so we are grateful that he chooses to spend some of it here! His job at Nimnicht Chevrolet keeps him busy from 7:30 am to 4:45 pm Monday through Friday. But he has to catch the bus at 5:30 in the morning in order to arrive at work on time, and his ride home takes just as long. Still, he loves delivering parts all over Northeast Florida, and he credits CRM’s workforce development program for opening the Nimnicht door to him. “They believe in giving people a second chance,” he says of the car dealership. Although he graduated from Ribault High School in 1985, Ogden earned a Florida Ready to Work silver credential at CRM. He also learned valuable lessons in the Life Skills classes he took as part of Life Build-ers—budgeting, presentation skills, resume writing, and more. “Life Skills really focuses on employment,” Ogden notes. Ogden chose to stay at CRM for about six months after he started working. He managed to save about $1100 during that time. Then he moved in with his mother, who was suffering from cancer and needed a caretaker. Although she is now in remission, he plans to remain there as long as she needs him. They attend Household of Faith church together on Sundays. Ogden used to work as a head custodian for the Duval County School Board but lost his job when his drug use led to excessive absenteeism. From there, his life spiraled out of control. He came to CRM in March of 2011 on the recommendation of a friend. “This is the first program I found, and it was like a bull’s-eye,” he quips. “I’m glad I came to City Rescue Mission because it changed my life for the better,” he reflects. “I learned how to build a relationship with God at CRM; the spiritual part was the most important part.” Ogden is quick to point out that he’s still learning. “You never get to a point where you have arrived, where you feel like you know everything,” he says.

“I discovered that I can do pretty much anything that I set my mind to do without the fear of failing. I learned how to embrace and accept and

keep moving forward.”
