A Voice in Our Nation’s Capital NLADA is the voice of indigent defenders with policymakers in Washington, D.C. and across the country fighting for: adequate funding and manageable caseloads; balanced funding between defenders and prosecutors, with equal access to federal grant money; student loan forgiveness to help defender offices recruit and keep talented young lawyers; and, for federal funds to establish a national defender training center. NLADA is fighting for a fair justice system.

1) Advancing Your Clients’ Causes Using Messaging and Storytelling

Facilitated by Justine Lewis and Jo-Ann Wallace Location: Senate Room Who is your target audience? What is your objective? What is your core message? Do you have a story that captures the heart of the issue? These are the types of questions that political advocates ask to advance their clients’ causes. Effective messaging and storytelling can increase your fluency in multiple arenas with tough audiences. Messages that stimulate shared value and sound results can impact decision-making. Stories that engage with simple language and strong characters can neutralize negative attitudes and create a movement toward justice. Using participant hypotheticals, this session will demonstrate how to practice the art of messaging and storytelling in political advocacy.

2) How to Build Unlikely Cross-sector Alliances Facilitated by Janice Tudy-Jackson and Carlos Martinez Location: Justice Room

As a public defender leader, manager, line lawyer or staff person, are you increasingly dissatisfied with the limited role and effectiveness of representing the real interests of your clients? Are you constantly trying to do more with less? Public Defender organizations are

realizing that they may have friends and allies in some of the most unlikely places. They've begun to reach out and build relationships with people and organizations--beyond the "usual suspects"-- and are finding greater support and more resources, for their public defense services. These can be challenging extra-curricular activities, especially with heavy workloads. However, taking basic steps to build "unlikely" alliances pays off in the long run. This session will explore the basics of how defender leaders can embrace this strategic challenge and enjoy the rewards of building profitable alliances across many sectors of their community.

3) Defenders and Community Justice: New Advocacy Frontiers Facilitated by Lenny Noisette and Thom Allena Location: Senate Room

Justice is becoming more and more a local or community phenomenon. With the emergence of community courts, restorative justice programs and neighborhood justice centers the roles for defenders in these initiatives are yet to be clearly defined. What can defenders bring to the community justice table that benefits clients and the communities in which they live? In this session we will explore and define community justice concepts, potential roles for defenders and strategies for participation in these initiatives.
