I will often refer to our School Plan and our strategic direction when I am talking about programs we are running to improve learning and wellbeing for the students in our care. The NSW Department of Education also has a Strategic Plan. When I was at the Principals’ Induction Conference last week, this plan was referred to often. There are ten goals in the plan. The goal that seems to be the big focus for this year is, ‘Every student is known, valued and cared for in our schools.’ As a teacher and a principal, I think that is a really inspiring goal and I started to think how we will achieve that as a community at New Lambton Heights Infants School. We may say it is easy in a small school. Yes, one of the great advantages is that teachers do know every student in our school. I absolutely have no doubt that they are valued and cared for. But I don’t think we should just tick the box and say we have achieved that goal. My challenge to us all this year is, how well do we know our students and children, and how do we know that? As teachers, what practices do we have in place to really know where our students are in their learning journey? Where do we need to take them? What engages/motivates our students? What do we know about their learning dispositions and the way they think and problem solve? As parents, how well do you engage in your child’s learning? Do you know how to best support them at home with their learning? Some food for thought. Don’t forget our P&C AGM meeting next week. Our current president, Kate, and secretary, Melinda, have been doing a great job at distributing information, so that you are able to be part of the process. Please come along, it is a great way to be involved in our school. Lisa Hughes (Principal) At New Lambton Heights Infants School we acknowledge that we teach, learn and play together on the traditional country of the Awabakal people, who are the custodians of this land. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present FUTURES LEARNING – I am Flexible This week we are learning about being ‘Flexible’ No this one is not about how good you are at Yoga! If we are flexible we: Look at problems from different angles. Change our plan if it isn’t working. We are also going to crunch our brains and continue learning how to ‘Sketch our Imagination’. If you have yellow learning disposition surveys at home, could you please return ASAP. VALUES FOCUS – Respect in the toilets This week we will be talking to each of the classes about our expectations of behaviour in and around the toilets and how we can show respect in this setting. Please feel free discuss with your children ways that they make sure that they are respectful in and around the toilets.
