Welcome to Trailside DiscoveryCome and join us for a summer of fun! Now in our 32nd year, Trailside Discovery is part of Alaska Center for the Environment. We are a private, non-profit program dedicated to providing youth with exciting learning experiences in the natural environment.
Located at the Campbell Creek Science Center, with well over 750 acres of forest and creek access, Trailside Discovery offers a big backyard that’s perfect for adventure, exploration, learning, and fun! We have extensive hiking trails, wildlife, and lots of camp fun!

Our dedicated staff of high school students, college students and college graduates balance teaching and learning with traditional elements of camp. Trailside Discovery packs a summer of outdoor adventure into each week. Our fun-filled educational programs are described throughout this guide. Preschool Programs for 4-5 year olds:Patient, enthusiastic instructors lead games, stories, and hands-on activities, encouraging campers to interact positively with the environment and each other. Programs aim to develop your children’s senses, motor skills and relationships as they discover the outdoors and personalities of fellow campers. We no longer offer a nap hour but a quiet time reading hour after lunch. Two staff per 10-12 Campers. Cost: $235 per week or sign up for any four weeks for $912.00 ($228 ea.). Plus, sign up for any additional weeks at this rate. Registration Fee: $50 per family. All programs begin at 9am and end at 4pm, except when otherwise noted. Childcare: Pre and after care is available for $20/precare/week and $20/after care/week or both for $30/week Transportation: Limited transportation is available to and from the Campbell Creek Science Center.

Day programs for 6-7 year olds:Naturalist instructors lead small groups, teaching the basics of ecology, geology, natural history, nature crafting, environmental stewardship, and outdoor survival skills. Staff encourage positive social interactions among campers through group activities and exploration. Fully packed, active days prepare campers for longer trips to come in future Trailside summers! Two staff per 12-14 campers. Cost: $235 per week or sign up for any four weeks for $912.00 ($228 ea.). Plus, sign up for any additional weeks at this rate. Registration Fee: $50 per family. All programs begin at 9am and end at 4pm except when otherwise noted. Childcare: Pre and after care is available for $20/precare/week and $20/after care/week or both for $30/week. Transportation: Limited transportation is available to and from the Campbell Creek Science Center.

Learning and fun combine as campers deepen their awareness of the ecosystems around Campbell Creek and broaden their understanding of Alaska by branching out to other locations.Two staff per 12-13 campers. Teacher Naturalist in Training (TNT) program for 13-16 year olds:We designed this new course for campers who are ready to share their passion, experiences, and skills with others. This course develops their leadership skills, preparing them for future jobs in the fields of environment, education, and outreach. Guest presenters join our specialized instructor team to lead this program. TNT graduates may be asked back for an additional week as a TDC staff volunteer in training. Cost – $235 per week

Alaskan Quest Trips I for 8–9 year olds:Our introductory trips are designed for campers who are ready to spend extended time away from the walls and windows of everyday life. After two days of checking gear, reviewing equipment, team building, wilderness safety, practicing basic skills, and Leave No Trace camping skills, campers head out for a three-day campout and discovery adventure. They return on Friday afternoon (Wed-Fri trip). 2 Staff per 12 campers. Cost – All trips are $245 - *No discount
Alaskan Quest Trips II for 10-11 year olds:These trips are designed for campers to expand their backcountry camping skills. After two days of team building, practicing skills, and preparing gear, campers head out for a three-day wilderness trip. They return on Friday afternoon. (Wed–Fri trip). 2 Staff per 12 campers. TWO WEEK TRIP! This trip is for highly motivated individuals seeking to develop youth leadership skills who have previous kayaking and backpacking experience. The trip will focus on building leadership skills and group development through backcountry travel. It will run Monday, June 30th through Friday, July 11th. The first two days will focus on preparation and goal setting at the CCSC. The group will depart to Homer on Wednesday, July 2nd and will return Thursday, July 10th. On Friday, July 11th the group will debrief and wrap-up at the CCSC.

Registration Policy: A registration fee of $50 is required per family. A nonrefundable $25.00 deposit, which goes towards the balance, is required for each week of camp attended. Total balance is due seven (7) days prior to each week of camp attended. If payment is not made, the balance will be automatically charged.

Refund Policy: Full course fee will be refunded if Trailside Discovery cancels program and space in a similar program is not available.
