5.1.10.1.4 Tubes shall be one of the following: 1. Copper remains
unchanged from previous code editions 2. Listed corrugated medical
tubing (CMT) fabricated from copper alloy No.
51000 strip, meeting ASTM B103/ B103M, Standard Specification for
Phosphor Bronze Plate, Sheet, Strip, and Rolled Bar, with a design
margin of 3.5, externally coated with a nonmetallic sheath marked
with the manufacturer’s marking. The listing shall include testing
to demonstrate that CMT systems can be consistently gas-purged with
results equivalent to comparable medical gas copper tubing

5.1.10.1.5 CMT shall have a flame spread index of 25 or less and a
smoke developed index of 50 or less as determined by ASTM E84 or
S102, Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of
Building Materials.
5.1.10.1.6 CMT shall be identified by the manufacturer as suitable
for oxygen service at a minimum of every 0.92 m (3 ft).
5.1.10.2.1(3) CMT is allowed for Vacuum/WAGD piping

5.1.10.3.2 Positive pressure patient gas systems, medical support
gas systems, vacuum systems, and WAGD systems constructed of CMT
shall have turns, offsets, and other changes in direction made by
bending the tubing up to the minimum bend radius or by fittings in
accordance with 5.1.10.3.1

manufacturer’s installation instructions.

CASE STUDY MediTrac® in Hospital Renovation
Until the innovative new product, Corrugated Medical Tubing (CMT),
was adopted into the Health Care Facilities Code NFPA 99 – 2018;
installation, retrofits and repairs of medical gas piping systems
were confined to the rigid installation practices of hard-drawn
seamless copper pipe.
MediTrac, the world’s first flexible medical gas piping system,
bends to a facility’s needs, resulting in shorter downtimes.
MediTrac decreases installation time by greatly reducing the number
of fittings, potential leak points and chance of contamination
during installation.
Project Overview: OmegaFlex® the makers of MediTrac® partnered with
Acute Medical Gas Services from Goffstown, NH on the first US based
BETA site installation at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose,
Massachusetts. The project included the relocation of an existing
zone valve box from the patient care area to a designated area
outside of the patient care area as required per NFPA 99.
Installation Overview The new zone valve box, containing shutoffs
for both a vacuum and oxygen line, was located on the other side of
a corridor beyond the fire stop roughly 65 feet away. For
comparison purposes the vacuum line was done in 1-1/4 hard-drawn
copper pipe and the oxygen lines were done in 1 MediTrac CMT. All
piping runs were done
in parallel taking the same route between connection points. In
total approximately 75 of piping was used for each run (150 total
per system).
The piping run included a vertical rise out of the new zone valve
box followed by a series of 90° and 45° bends to the 65
straight run down the corridor. The piping then turned 90 degrees
across the corridor and was tied into the existing supply and
distribution lines. Both piping systems utilized the same existing
hanger supports down the 65’ corridor run.

Termination of MediTrac CMT piping is easy with the patent pending
MediTrac fitting.
MediTrac cuts the same as hard-drawn copper pipe but navigates
confined spaces and corners without the hot-work.
CASE STUDY MediTrac® in Hospital Renovation
As with all rigid piping installations elbows are required when
turning corners and changing direction to route around, above, or
below obstacles. MediTrac CMT is able to bend around corners and
flex to avoid potential obstacles. Resulting in no intermediate
connections.
In this case two 1 MediTrac CMT lines were pulled together, much
like pulling wire or cabling through a hole in the fire wall down
the entire length of the corridor in roughly 15 minutes. An
additional 30 minutes later the piping rough in was complete and
ready for fitting connections.

the final tie in to existing line.
Medical Oxygen MediTrac® CMT details • 12 total man hours to pull
and connect,
- Note: Prefab of a T for an alarm sensor and reducing couplings to
make the final tie-in required. So, in theory, you could subtract
several hours from this time.
Overall the use of MediTrac® resulted in a 79% reduction in joints
for the piping system and a minimum of an 82% reduction in labor
man hours. Additional benefits of the MediTrac® system as noted by
Acute Medical include:

Reduced cost in support items such as brazing rods and purge
gas
Contamination possibility is greatly reduced
Lack of intermediate joints and the systems flexibility resolve
fire prevention during difficult brazing situations unlike hard
drawn copper systems (wire, ducts with dust inside, walls, gas
piping, etc.)

CASE STUDY MediTrac® in Hospital Renovation
MediTrac® by OmegaFlex® continues its introduction into the market
by providing innovation from end to end with another
installation.
Project Overview OmegaFlex® the makers of MediTrac® partnered with
Pure-Line Plumbing from Durham, NC on a medical vacuum system
retrofit at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Henrico, Virginia. The
project included the removal of an existing oxygen only zone valve
box and installation of a new O2 and vacuum zone valve box. This
newly added box is used to service 9 patient care rooms with
updated oxygen outlets and newly added vacuum outlets. Existing
oxygen piping was reused and a hybrid system utilizing copper pipe
and MediTrac® corrugated medical tubing was installed for the
vacuum lines. This hybrid system installation highlights the easy
and efficiency of using MediTrac® CMT seamlessly with traditional
rigid copper tubing materials.
Installation Overview The tie in to the closest vacuum line was
approximately 110 away from the updated
zone valve box. 1 MediTrac® was used to navigate multiple changes
in direction in a tightly packed space above the ceiling with 2
through wall penetrations. Routing of rigid copper piping in this
location would have been difficult due to the limited space
available for routing of the piping system and the brazing that
would have been required for the traditional piping system.
The outlet from the zone valve box was connected to roughly 28 of
3/4 MediTrac® CMT. Piping was installed vertically up the wall
cavity to the space above the drop ceiling and routed into the
patient care area via a 3rd through penetration. At this point the
piping system was transitioned from MediTrac® to rigid copper pipe
that was routed in an “L” configuration in the ceiling of the
corridor outside of the individual patient care rooms. A total of
six (6) brazed copper tees were installed to provide seven (7)
drops off the copper piping to service all nine (9) patient care
rooms.
In total there was roughly 110 of 1 and 185 of ¾ MediTrac® CMT
installed in this project in conjunction with approximately 68 of ¾
rigid brazed copper. (continued

CASE STUDY MediTrac® in Hospital Renovation
Installation Highlights The initial 110 run from the existing
vacuum line to the new zone valve box was pulled and roughed in in
40 minutes. That time included the drilling of 2 through
penetrations. Final tie in took the total install time of this
section to roughly 1 hour. It was estimated that to complete this
same run with rigid copper piping would have taken at least 4.5
hours and required a large number of braze joints to navigate the
tight installation location.
While most of the tie-ins from the copper line to the patient care
rooms were not very long, ranging from 15 to 35, the reduction of
overhead work to fit and braze copper ells and couplings saved on
installation time. That savings on installation time allowed the
job to be completed in the short window available for the
installation.
