DESCRIPTION

Why these factsheets? Horizon 2020, the next framework programme for research and innovation supporting the Innovation Union flagship initiative, starts on the 1st of January 2014. The factsheets present the strengths of Indian research and innovation and an inventory of excellent research organisations and universities in India in the fields of H2020 societal challenges. The objective of these factsheets is to help European researchers identify the most suitable Indian partners; in particular for their participation in Horizon 2020 projects, but also in other bilateral or multilateral activities. European scientists will also be supported in appreciating the quality of an Indian university when approached by an Indian PhD or Post-Doctoral candidate.

1. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)

AIIMS was established in 1956. It is an Institution of National Importance and a leader in the field of medical research. The Institute is committed to high qual-ity basic and clinical research. Over 600 research projects were conducted in the year 2010 – 2011.

2. Bose Institute

Bose Institute, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, is one of the few multi-disciplinary institutions in the country that has succeeded in developing a vast intellectual resource in areas ranging from astrophysics, radiation physics, quantum mechanics to the frontline areas of contemporary biology such as bioinformatics & computational biology, struc-ture and functional dynamics of biomolecules, drug modelling, molecular ge-netics of microbes and development of transgenic plants. The Institute is rec-ognised for its research in the areas of Biochemistry, Biophysics, Microbiology and Molecular medicine.

3. Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI)

CSIR-CDRI is a pioneer research organisation of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in the field of biomedical research. The very latest techniques and methodologies are employed for developing drugs, diagnos-tics and vaccines to combat diseases prevalent among mankind in general and particularly in the Indian population. A common challenge between India and Europe

The main challenge for both India and Europe in the field of health is to improve the life-long health and well-being of all while maintaining economically sustainable healthcare systems. It is all about increasing efficiency and effectiveness of programme development and management of health promotion as well as disease prevention and control.

The priorities are: better understanding of infectious diseases, bacterial resistance to macrobiotics, neurosciences and mental disorders, as well as developing the health services research and improving the drug delivery systems., With a need for faster transfer of knowledge and discovery from the basic sciences to its application in clinical and community settings, translational research will become even more important.

The strengths of Indian Research and Development

The strengths of Indian research are mainly in the field of biological science, mycobacterial diseases, tuberculosis, epidemiology, malaria, cholera, enteric diseases, medical entomology, immunohaematology, enterovirus, clinical research for reproductive health, cytology, preventive oncology as well as nutrition and drug toxicology research.

gation of malaria and other parasitic diseases, reproductive health research, diabetes and energy metabolism, tuberculosis and microbial infections, CVS, CNS and related disorders, cancer and related areas, and safety and clinical development.

4. Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (King George’s Medical University)

KGMU is a medical university located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Research in King George Medical College is conducted under a Research Cell. The hospi-tal is managed by 250 consultants, 500 resident doctors, 300 nurses, 63 phar-macists and 100 technical & paramedical staff.

5. Christian Medical College, Vellore (CMC)

CMC Vellore is recognised as one of the top medical centres in India. Research is an integral part of the mission of CMC having a wide and long-lasting impact on the nation’s health. Over the past century, CMC has contributed significantly in generating and advancing knowledge which has improved curative and pre-ventive medical services locally and internationally. The main thrust is orientat-ed towards cost effective solutions to health issues, where the need is greatest, in order to optimise the use of resources.

6. Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB)

CSIR-IICB, a constituent unit of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), is engaged in research on diseases of national importance and biolog-ical problems of global interest. The laboratory conducts multidisciplinary re-search with concerted efforts for conducting basic research on infectious dis-eases, specifically leishmaniasis and cholera, along with the development of technologies for the diagnosis, immunoprophylaxis, and chemotherapy of the diseases. The main strengths of the institute are in the field of biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, neurobiology and immunology which promotes productive interdisciplinary interaction.

7. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT Delhi)

IIT Delhi is an Institution of National Importance in higher technological educa-tion. The Institute has 13 academic departments, 11 centres and 3 schools. The Department of biochemical engineering & biotechnology at IIT Delhi holds a unique position in the development of the biochemical engineering discipline in India.

8. Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB)

CSIR-IGIB located in New Delhi is a premier institute of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). It is engaged in research of national importance in the areas of genomics, molecular medicine, bioinformatics, proteomics and environmental biotechnology. Its mission is to translate concepts developed in basic biological research to commercially viable technologies for health care. The main fields of studies of the CSIR-IGIB are: genomics and molecular med-icine, respiratory disease biology, genome informatics and structural biology, energy and environmental biotechnology, chemical & systems biology.

9. Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR)

JNCASR is a multidisciplinary research institute situated in Jakkur, a locali-ty north of Bangalore, India. It is relatively young yet well-known around the globe. The centre is funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and is Deemed to be a University. Its mandate is to pur-sue and promote world-class research and training at the frontiers of science and engineering covering broad areas ranging from materials to genetics. Research in the Molecular Biology and Genetics Units is in diverse areas of bi-ology bound by the common thread of biomedical applications. The current re-search areas fall into the categories of Infectious diseases, cell cycle, chromatin organisation and transcription regulation, developmental biology and genetics.

10. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)

JNU is a public central university in New Delhi. It is a premier institution of high-er learning and promotes research and teaching leading to the increasing en-gagement of its students and teachers in higher level academic work and na-tional and international policy making. University is organised into 10 schools, each of which has several centres, as well as 4 independent special centres.

11. King Edward Memorial Hospital India (KEM)

King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital is amongst the foremost teaching and medical care providing institutions in India. It was founded in 1926 in Mumbai.

12. Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC)

MAMC is a government medical college in Delhi affiliated to the University of Delhi. It has endeavoured to promote all facilities conducive to learning and furtherance of knowledge by pursuance of objectives of medical education by improving the course contents, continuing education and strengthening of re-search activities. The college has an established research society with its prima-ry objective being to promote research activities.

13. National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health (NIRRH)

NIRRH is a premier research institute of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). It is situated in the vicinity of a number of hospitals and research insti-tutes in central Mumbai. The Institute is one of the few centres in India, which can boast of a team of basic, clinical and operational research scientists and state-of-art laboratories equipped with modern facilities to carry out research on various components of reproductive health. The Institute is a World Health Organisation (WHO) collaborating centre for research and training in repro-ductive health. The Institute has made significant strides to developing newer contraceptives, both for the male and the female; generate information on the safety, efficacy and acceptability of available contraceptives in the Indian pop-ulation; and elucidate basic mechanisms underlying reproductive physiology. The Institute has also undertaken a number of studies on the social and behav-ioural aspects of fertility regulation with an aim to increase informed choices for women and to enable increased male participation in reproductive health mat-ters. Reproductive tract infections (RTIs) including sexually transmitted infec-tions (STIs) among women has also been the focus of research. The institute has added new research areas and modern technological innovations to its pletho-ra of already existing expertise, leading to several significant research contribu-tions including the birth of India’s first scientifically documented test tube baby.

14. National Institute of Immunology (NII)

NII is an autonomous institution supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The Institute is committed to advanced research address-ing the basic mechanisms involved in the body’s defence, host-pathogen inter-actions and related areas with a view to contribute to the creation of an inter-nationally competitive intellectual knowledge base as a sustainable source of innovative futuristic modalities of potential use in health care. In the past two decades, NII has flourished in cutting-age research in immunology, infectious diseases, reproductive biology, genetics, cell signalling & cancer biology and structural & chemical biology.

15. National Institute of Malaria Research (NIMR)

NIMR is one of the institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The primary task of the Institute is to find short and long term solutions to the problems of malaria through basic, applied and operational field research. NIMR has a network of well-developed laboratories in Delhi carrying out re-search on all aspects of malaria including 10 field laboratories in malarious ar-eas, which serve as testing ground for new technologies and help in the trans-fer of technologies. for important malaria vectors and parasites, cytotaxonomic studies identifying major vectors as species complexes and laboratory and field studies to exam-ine the biological variations among sibling species, development of molecular identification techniques for sibling species, monitoring of insecticide resist-ance through space and time and preparation of action plans.

16. National Institute of Virology (NIV)

NIV is one of the major Institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). It was established in Pune in 1952 and was an outcome of the global pro-gramme of the Rockefeller Foundation for investigating arthropod borne virus-es. The Institute was designated as one of the collaborating laboratories of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1967 and it started functioning as WHO’s regional centre for South-East Asia for arbovirus studies from 1969. NIV is also the national centre for hepatitis and influenza. The scientific activities of the in-stitute are multidisciplinary ranging from surveillance, outbreak investigations, basic and translational research. The thrust areas of research include epidemi-ology, hepatitis, encephalitis, dengue, chikungunya, human influenza, avian in-fluenza, enteric viruses, measles, medical entomology & zoology, and bioinfor-matics & data management.

17. Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER)

PGIMER was founded in 1962 as a centre of excellence which would endeav-our to develop patterns of teaching in postgraduate medical education in as many branches as possible and attempt to produce specialists in several dis-ciplines of medicine as well as broaden the horizons of medical knowledge by intensive research in the field of health. Its mandate is to undertake basic com-munity based research. Scientific inquiry includes basic and clinical research.

18. Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS)

SGPGIMS is a premier medical institute of India located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. It was established in 1983. The institute is rated amongst the top med-ical institutions in the country, delivering state-of-art tertiary medical care, su-per-specialty teaching, training and research.

19. Tata Memorial Centre, Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC)

ACTREC is the state-of-the-art R&D satellite of the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), which also includes under its umbrella the Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), the largest cancer hospital in Asia. ACTREC has the mandate to function as a na-tional centre for treatment, research and education in cancer. TMC is an au-tonomous grant-in-aid institution of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. ACTREC carries out basic and clinical research. Scientists undertake multi-pronged investigations into cancer biology, which address ba-sic and translational research queries using human tumours, experimental ani-mals and cells in culture, with an aim to provide the tools for chemoprevention, early diagnosis, prognosis and therapy. Clinic research is conducted on pedi-atric cancers, brain tumors, head and neck cancer, cervical cancer, breast can-cer, cancer genetics and technology evaluation.

20. University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS)

UCMS was established in 1971 as a Constituent College of the University of Delhi. The college is known for its quality research and exemplary education. It ranks 7th in the nation; based on the number of publications in PubMed in-dexed journals. The institute is a network centre for the National Brain Research Centre.

1. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)

AIIMS established in 1956 as an Institution of National Importance and is a lead-er in the field of medical research and related physical biological sciences. The Institute is committed to high quality basic and clinical research. Over 600 re-search projects were conducted in the year 2010 – 2011.

2. Annamalai University

The Annamalai University, established in 1929, has grown rapidly and has con-solidated its position as a unitary and residential university with 49 departments of study and over 3240 teaching staff.

3. Banaras Hindu University (BHU)

BHU ranks among the first few institutions in the country in the field of aca-demic and research output. The University has 2 campuses, 3 institutes, 16 fac-ulties, 140 departments, 4 advanced centres and 4 interdisciplinary schools. The University is making its mark at the national and international levels in a number of frontier areas of science, social science, technology, medicine and agriculture.

A common challenge between India and Europe

The specific objective of this challenge is to secure sufficient supplies of safe and high quality food and other bio based products, by developing productive and resource efficient primary production systems, fostering related ecosystem services, alongside competitive and low carbon supply chains. This will accelerate the transition to a sustainable Indian and European bioeconomy. The bioeconomy will promote sustainable production of renewable biological resources and their conversion into food, bio-based products, biofuels and bioenergy while preserving the environment and ecosystem services.

The strengths of Indian Research and Development

The main strengths of Indian research answering the mentioned challenges are the following ones: sectorial potential, pioneering advantage, human resources – core competency, resource monitoring and stock assessment, conservation of stocks through passive methods, economics and extension, focused vision and proactive management plan, international collaborative research, extension of mariculture technologies.

4. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC)

BARC, a premier multi-disciplinary Nuclear Research Centre in India of the Department of Atomic Energy, has excellent infrastructure for advanced re-search and development with expertise covering the entire spectrum of nucle-ar science, engineering and related areas. It has developed 40 different varie-ties of high yield seeds through radiation induced mutation (20 of pulses, 15 of ground nut, 3 of mustard and 1 each of rice and jute). The thematic strengths R&D activities in Life Sciences at BARC span a wide range of thrust areas in con-temporary biological research. Radioisotopes and radiation technologies prove as useful tools in biological research. These tools have been extensively used in R&D (both basic and applied), in agriculture, for improving crop productivity and to reduce post-harvest losses. In addition, molecular mechanisms of abiot-ic stress tolerance, molecular marker techniques for marker assisted selection, development and characterisation of transgenic plants, enzyme microbial tech-nology and pest management studies are also being undertaken.

5. CCS Haryana Agricultural University (CCS HAU)

CCS HAU is a public funded agricultural university located at Hisar in the Indian state of Haryana. It is one of the biggest agricultural universities in Asia. It is named after India’s seventh Prime Minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh. It has con-tributed significantly to Green Revolution and White Revolution in India.

6. Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI)

CSIR-CFTRI, a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has always been on a high pedestal in the areas of unpar-alleled technology development in the area of food science and technology. The Institute is well known for its research in the field of biochemistry & nutri-tion, food engineering, food microbiology, food protectants & infestation con-trol, fruit & vegetable technology, meat & marine sciences, protein chemistry & technology, fermentation technologies & bioengineering, flour milling, bak-ing & confectionery technologies, food packaging technology, plant cell bio-technology, plantation products, spices & flavour technology, and grain sci-ence technology.

7. Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL)

DFRL is under the aegis of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Ministry of Defence, Government of India, in Mysore. It caters espe-cially to the strategic operational requirements of our services and to provide logistical support in the area of food supplies and varied food challenges of the Indian Army, Navy, Air force and other paramilitary forces. The strengths of the laboratory are: R&D in food science and technology, studies in the devel-opment of convenience foods, preservation of foods, food safety, food pack-aging, and studies in the spoilage of foods and safety of processed foods, pro-duction and supply of processed foods on a limited scale to the Armed Forces and other bodies for national missions, toxicological, nutritional and biochemi-cal studies, development of pack rations, their quality assurance methods, pres-ervation and packaging methods for long distance transportation of perisha-ble products, evaluation of nutritional requirements of troops deployed under different climatic conditions, development of novel food based on emerging technologies viz. high pressure, pulsed electric field, infrared, microwave, irra-diation and combination processing of foods.

8. Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI)

IARI, a leading institution for agricultural research, education and extension in the country, has 20 divisions, 5 multi-disciplinary Centres, 8 regional stations. It is located in Delhi. It functions with the mandate to conduct basic and strate-gic research with a view of understanding the processes, in all their complexi-ty and to undertake need based research that leads to crop improvement and sustained agricultural productivity in harmony with the environment. The main strengths of IARI are in the field of agricultural chemicals, agricultural econom-ics, agricultural engineering, agricultural extension, agricultural physics, agron-

9. Indian institute of Chemical Technology (IICT)

CSIR-IICT is a constituent of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). It is a leading research institute in the area of chemical sciences. The re-search efforts of the Institute have resulted in the development of several in-novative processes for a variety of products necessary for human welfare such as drugs, agrochemicals, food, organic intermediates and adhesives. It has al-so worked on the research of eco-friendly alternatives to pesticides, oils and li-pids research, biocatalysis and bio transformations.

10. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT Delhi)

IIT, Delhi is an Institution of national importance in higher technological edu-cation. It was established in 1961. The Institute has 13 academic departments, 11 multidisciplinary centres and 3 schools. Over the last five decades special-ised laboratories devoted to these areas have been developed to a high de-gree of sophistication.

11. Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT Kgp)

The first of the IITs to be established is the IIT Kgp which is recognised as an Institution of National Importance by the Government of India. It is located in Kharagpur in the state of West Bengal and is engaged in a steady process of development with about 19 academic departments, 8 multi-disciplinary cen-tres / schools, and 13 schools of excellence in addition to laboratories and cen-tral research facilities. Currently there are about 550 faculties, 1700 employees and 9000 students.

12. Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR)

CSIR-IITR, Lucknow, a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), is a multidisciplinary research institute with the mot-to: “Safety to Environment and Health and Service to Industry” addresses prob-lems critical to human health and environment. The institute works on the devel-opment and / or establishment of methodologies to quantify the potential toxic agent in food, to understand the mechanism of toxicity of new food additives, contaminants, adulterants, detection of GM food / crop and their safety / aller-genic assessment, identification of phytochemicals / herbal preparations, which can modify the toxicity of above chemical moieties in food.

13. Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI)

IVRI is one of the premier research institutions dedicated to livestock research and development of the region working under the aegis of Indian Council of Agricultural Research. The institute plays an important role in quality control and potency testing of immunobiologicals to various stakeholders with a good liaison with industry. The main fields of research are: animal health, animal ge-netic resources, livestock improvement, livestock products technology, basic and social sciences.

14. Jadavpur University

Jadavpur University has successfully established itself as a foremost Indian uni-versity offering a vast repertoire of courses, having an enviable list of faculty members and has come to be known for its commitment towards advanced study and research. It is at present an internationally recognised premier uni-versity of the country. It is an urban university with a global perspective and is dedicated to creating leaders who will fashion a more humane and just world.

15. National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI)

NDRI is a premier institute under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). It undertakes research, teaching and extension activities towards dairy devel-opment in the country. 17. National Institute of Oceanography (NIO)

CSIR-NIO is a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) with its headquarters in Dona Paula, Goa, and regional cen-tres in Kochi, Mumbai and Visakhapatnam. The Institute has grown today into a large oceanographic laboratory of international repute. The focus of research has been on observing and understanding the special oceanographic features that the north Indian basin offers. 18. Punjab Agricultural University India (PAU)

PAU was established in 1962. It is located in Ludhiana city (Punjab State) in the north-west of India at a distance of 316 km from New Delhi. Modeled on the pattern of the land grant colleges in U.S.A., PAU performs the integrated func-tions of teaching, research and extension in agriculture, agricultural engineer-ing, home science and allied disciplines. PAU has played a key role in increas-ing food grain production several folds in the Punjab state . It contributes in ush-ering an era of Green Revolution in India.

19. University of Delhi (DU)

DU is a premier institute of higher education in India established in 1922. It is a public central university located in Delhi, India. 1. Anna University

Anna University is a technical university in Tamil Nadu. It has been ranked the 9th best university in India. The centre for research at Anna University offers re-search programmes in different branches of engineering, technology, architec-ture and planning, science & humanities and management sciences since 1978.

2. Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU)

Bengal Engineering and Science University was established in 1856 in Shibpur, Howrah. It is the second oldest engineering institution, a premier engineering and state funded institution in India. The university has cabinet approval from the Union Government to transform it to an Institute of national importance, namely, the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST).

3. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC)

BARC has also mastered the fuel design and fabrication technology containing urani-um, plutonium, thorium and uranium 233. 6. Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI)

IARI, a leading institution for agricultural research, education and extension in the country, has 20 divisions, 5 multi-disciplinary Centres and 8 regional sta-tions. It is located in Delhi. It functions with the mandate to conduct basic and strategic research with a view of understanding the processes, in all their com-plexity and to undertake need-based research that lead to crop improvement and sustained agricultural productivity in harmony with environment. 7. Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS)

IACS is one of the oldest research institutes in India. It is an autonomous insti-tute under the Department of Science and Technology. The institute is devoted to the pursuit of fundamental research in the frontier areas of physics, chemis-try, biology, energy, polymer and materials. 8. Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT)

9. Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad)

In the last several years, IIMA has consistently been ranked as the number one management school in the country . Horizon 2020 will support improved policies necessary to promote innovation and meet the challenges raised by transport to achieve a European transport system that is resource-efficient, environmentally-friendly, safe and seamless for the benefit of citizens, the economy and society. India is suffering from a critical shortage of electricity generation. Transport is seen as one of the major areas to increase efficiency in the use of energy, including the fuel-efficient vehicles, electrification of transport and transport systems. In this framework, transport is one of the areas where the EU and India have jointly identified a scope for enhanced cooperation leading to better governance and policy-making. Cooperation between India and EU can therefore be established based on common interest and mutual benefits on smart, green and integrated transport.

The strengths of Indian Research and Development

3. Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE)

ATREE is a research institution in the areas of biodiversity conservation and sus-tainable development. It focuses on applied science through research, educa-tion and action that influences policy and practice on conservation of nature, management of natural resources, and sustainable development. ATREE is well known for its research in the field of biosystematics, terrestrial ecosystems and climate change, monitoring and habitat management, invasive species and dis-turbance, urban ecology, conservation planning and society.

A common challenge between India and Europe

In line with the perspective of Horizon 2020, resource efficient and climate change resilient economy that meets the needs of a growing global population within the natural limits of a finite planet, climate change adaptation and mitigation measures through the generation of evidence for informed, early and effective action and the networking of the required competences are targeted by EU. In India, the population is growing rapidly along with increased economic development, and putting enormous pressure on the country’s natural resource base. In this process, the main environmental challenges that India faces are deforestation, biodiversity loss, land / soil degradation, air pollution, poor management of waste, growing water scarcity, falling groundwater tables and water pollution. As a result, in this framework, EU and India can cooperate to meet these global challenges and to develop the institutional capacity and technical responses necessary to tackle climate change, waste and water issues.

The strengths of Indian Research and Development

India, having a huge and dense population and an economy tied closely to its natural resource base, is very vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The increased carbon emissions are likely to have severe adverse impacts on India’s precipitation patterns, ecosystems, agricultural potential, forests, water resources, coastal & marine resources, besides an increase in the range of several disease vectors. This creates a huge room for manoeuvre for the researchers working in this area.

4. Banaras Hindu University (BHU)

5. Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development (GBPIHED)

GBPIHED is an autonomous institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEF) which has been identified as a focal agency to advance scientific knowl-edge, to evolve integrated management strategies, to demonstrate their effica-cy for conservation of natural resources, and to ensure environmentally sound development in the entire Indian Himalayan Region. The institute attempts to maintain a balance of intricate linkages between socio-cultural, ecological, eco-nomic and physical systems that could lead to sustainability in the IHR. The strengths of the institute are environmental assessment & management, water-shed process and management, biodiversity conservation and management.

6. Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI)

IARI, a leading institution for agricultural research, education and extension in the country, has 20 divisions, 5 multi-disciplinary centres and 8 regional sta-tions located in Delhi. It functions with the mandate of conducting basic and strategic research with a view of understanding the processes in all their com-plexity and to undertake need based research that leads to crop improvement and sustained agricultural productivity in harmony with environment. IARI is in-terdisciplinary in the field of agricultural research and works on several climate change issues related to agriculture.

7. Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM)

IIFM is an autonomous institution of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEF). The vision of IIFM is to be among the leading international institu-tions in the area of environment, forest and development management and be respected, both nationally and internationally, for its outstanding contribu-tions in the fields of education, training, research, consultancy and thoughts’ leadership. The IIFM is well known for its activities and research on behaviour-al mapping of urban settlements towards changing climate, the impact of cli-mate change on forest dependent communities, forest certification and climate change regulations.

8. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS)

IIRS is an important segment of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) un-der the Department of Space; Government of India. IIRS is a premier training and educational institute set up for developing trained professionals in the field of remote sensing, geoinformatics and GPS technology for natural resources, environmental and disaster management. The main areas of investigation of the IIRS are vegetation carbon pool assessment, soil carbon pool assessment and urban growth modelling.

9. Indian Institute of Science (IISc)

The IISc was conceived as a ‘Research Institute’ or ‘University of Research’ by JN Tata in the final years of the 19th century. It is located in Bangalore. The Institute’s departments in fields ranging from biochemistry to aerospace engi-neering have served to nucleate research and development in both the public and private sectors. 10. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT Delhi)

IIT Delhi was established in 1961. This is an Institute of National Importance in higher technological education. The Institute has 13 academic departments, 11 multidisciplinary centres and 3 schools. 11. Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT Kgp)

The IIT Kgp was the first of the IITs to be established and is recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the government of India. 12. International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT)

ICRISAT is a non-profit, non-political organisation that conducts agricultural research for development in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa with a wide array of partners throughout the world. ICRISAT conducts research protecting the environment, having as focus the vulnerability to climate change, adaptation strategies and layers of resilience, agricultural diversification and sustainable agro-ecosystems.

15. National Institute of Oceanography India (NIO)

16. National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC)

NRSC is an important segment of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) with the mandate of providing earth observation data from space and aerial platforms to users, develop technologies for the management of natural resources, support disaster monitoring and management and capacity build-ing for utilisation of the data. 17. Space Applications Centre (SAC)

SAC is one of the major centres of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. SAC primarily focuses on the design of space-borne instruments for ISRO missions and the development and opera-tionalisation of applications of space technology for national development. The applications cover communication, broadcasting, navigation, disaster monitor-ing, meteorology, oceanography, environment monitoring and natural resourc-es survey. SAC is also recognised by its research in the field of satellite com-munications technology and applications: payloads, antenna, ground systems, SATCOM applications, remote sensing technology and applications: electro-optical sensors, microwave sensors, image processing, RS applications, fabri-cation and test facilities.

18. The Energy and Resources Institute India (TERI)

TERI is located in Delhi and works on development of solutions to global prob-lems in the fields of energy, environment and current patterns of development, which are largely unsustainable. TERI’s research focuses on climate science and modeling; impacts, vulnerability, and adaptation assessments; GHG inventori-sation and mitigation; and international and national policy review and analysis

20. University of Delhi (DU)

In its efforts to strengthen STI collaboration between Europe and India, the New INDIGO project has supported the implementation of an informal sup-port network called “the Focal Points network”. The Focal Points are Indian re-searchers from major research institutes and universities in India, with prior ex-perience in FP6 / FP7 projects. They were selected based on their good network in India, as well as in Europe.

Their role is to provide first assistance to Indian scientists wishing to take part in FP7 / H2020 projects, especially by informing them about funding opportu-nities in Horizon 2020 and by redirecting them to the most appropriate sup-port in Europe. Similarly, they can assist European scientists looking for part-ners in India.

The network is tailored-made to the Indian context and covers various regions in India.
